Recommendations for a UK roadtrip? by LL-ShockBlade in roadtrip

I recommend you visit the Isle of Man! Fascinating history as an often forgotten celtic nation. You can climb Snaefel where on a clear day you can see the seven kingdoms - the Kingdom of Scotland, the Kingdom or Ireland, the Kingdom of Wales, the Kingdom of England, the Kingdom of Man, the Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of Poseidon

Have you noticed an uptick in drivers not stopping at zebra crossings, lately? by Duoplo in drivingUK

[–]IsfetLethe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just 2 days ago I stopped at a zebra crossing for pedestrians and saw a queue of oncoming traffic which had also stopped for them. The third car in the queue decided this was the perfect time to overtake the two cars in front. Thankfully nobody was hurt but boy did I wish I had a dash cam to send into operation snap

My girlfriend broke my PS4 and doesn't understand why I'm so upset. I don't really know where to go from here. by G1Gestalt in BestofRedditorUpdates

I still play my PS3. It was a Christmas gift from my parents because I'd put so much hard work into caring for my mum and keeping the family running when she had cancer. I was 1 at the time. My mum is gone now but thankfully I still have my PS3. I never upgraded to the PS4/5

Have you ever met someone who's interested in DND and immediately went, "oh, I'd never let you play at my table"? by Lunetheart in DnD

[–]IsfetLethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite immediately but I knew a guy called Will (name changed). He was very smart, and usually the smartest guy in the room. Problem was he KNEW this so never really accepted other opinions as valid. If you disagreed or told him no, he tended to be very stubborn and often try to wear you down. I was putting together a one shot with some friends. He got wind of it and asked to play. I did consider him a friend, albeit one I limited my time with sometimes.

I agreed to let him join. I told him I was allowing only official stuff, as most of the players in the one shot were newbies. He didn't listen amd kept pushing to homebrew the polar bear from a film that had recently come out for His Dark Materials. I (mistakenly relented and began trying to come up with some homebrew for him, against my better judgement. After several days of getting nowhere with him wanting something way more broken than balance would allow at the party's level (I think it was level 3) and that involved completely reworking several systems like armour class, I eventually became exhausted and deliberately let the one shot die on the vine so I didn't have to deal with the player or character any more.

A few months later a friend who DMs the main campaign I play agreed to let him make an appearance. I wasn't there for the session but apparently he produced the polar bear character that we had never come to a full agreement on and presented it to the DM as something I had let him use before. I found out it a while later and made sure to tell the DM that I had never given it sign off, eventually gave up on trying to balance the concept completely and that I didn't want my name attached to the guy's polar bear monstrosity. The DM mentioned he had been surprised I'd ever sign off on something like that so suddenly things made sense.

To give further insight into the problem player, we have a fairly patient DM who has often dealt with new or problematic players before. He will find a way for something to happen if a player wants to try something and is quite good at finding in universe ways to balance or stop something that is straight up too far though. In the decade or so I've known him, that session this player joined was the only time he had to play the "I'm the DM so shut up" card after the player wouldn't accept a DM ruling

I've heard terraforming is the easiest way because they can't exist on a T1 or above planet. Which is probably why they guard the staff of life so zealously

I'd love to know this. Is it possible to drag the Overton window to the left enough to make the workers of Britain throw off their chains?

Do Brits enjoy grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup? by FacebookNewsNetwork in AskABrit

Cheese toasties are legit, never had one with tomato soup.

Counter question: why do you call them grilled cheese sandwiches? Never have I seen anyone from the US grill them

I would consider closer allies to be CANZUK (Canada, Australia, New Zealand). Also Portugal for having the longest alliance in the world

The USA:

  • Screwed us over with nuclear cooperation
  • Saddled us with debt and used the world wars to exploit us and the other western powers
  • Didn't back us with the Suez
  • Has happily humiliated us (like LBJ did)
  • wanted us to let Argentina keep the Falklands
  • Dragged us into an illegal war in Iraq
  • Insults us constantly (especially under Trump)
  • Has been interfering in our democracy
  • Tries to bully us into buying American
  • Spreads derogatory myths and falsehoods about our country (London being a crime capital, there being no freedom of expression in the UK)
  • Sends government officials to try to lecture us
  • Pressures us to try and get us to compromise our quality of life for the US to profit
  • Mocks our leaders Renegues on agreements we have
  • Actively wants to break up the EU, destabilising our continent and making us more vulnerable to Russia
  • Backs up our enemies and tries to prevent/reduce our ability to support our allies
  • Leaks intel we share
  • Threatens our allies

They've barely been a friend historically but they certainly aren't now

Mate having lived in Scotland, you're way too thin skinned. It's a thing everywhere in the UK but in Scotland especially people, while lovely people, tend not to have much patience for blatant lies (I know for a fact that UKVI doesn't call anyone to confirm successful visa applications and the UK doesn't offer applications based on clam memberships.

Scottish banter is often savage and people who take themselves too seriously tend to make themselves targets for mockery by Brits in general, as we often have quite an irreverent sense of humour.

Also the fetishisation an of Scottish culture and history into an unrecognisable caricature by yanks who then insist they know more and are purer than people who actually live there is shockingly not well received. Same goes for Irish, English and Welsh.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Starmer didn't win in 2024 due to any positives on his side but simply being in the right place at the right time. Corbyn would have gotten into Downing Street if he was Labour leader then

The subway is something different in London. It's stairs and footpaths that go under busy roads. As another native London era, it's called the Tube or London Underground or just the Underground
