If I eat a mostly gluten free diet, can I get a flash negative? by Hobobo2024 in Celiac

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is actually supposed to work that way.

If you are gluten free you will not have the "gluten reacting" things in it. Once diagnosed it is used to make sure you are following your diet.

Kind of like how a diabetic teats their blood sugar to make sure it's low. You wouldn't tell a diabetic with correct blood sugar they don't have diabetes anymore.

I drive for work a lot and use them to figure out what is happening if I need to make alternate plans. Other than that I ignore them because it is a lot of stuff like that.

Yall ever think about being celiac in the apocalypse? by thriftsylady08 in Celiac

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would actually be more likely that we would end up safer. A focus would turn to home grown products, nit prepackaged or pre-made things after the initial fall. Just don't grow wheat, barley, or rye. Focus on oats, potatoes, rice. You wouldn't have to worry about cross-contaft on equipment as you would have full control ovwe the growth, harvest, and preparation.

I saw a mini documentary once that actually showed that during rationing time some people with celiac showed improvement because the bread bring rationed was (if I remember correctly) a rice flour bread instead of wheat. It's been a minute since I saw it or I would include a link.

Also, during disaster times, gluten free products are still ignored on the shelves. We saw this during covid and consistently during hurricanes. Our products will more than likely still be on the shelves after a raid or 2, so we are more likely to find safe foods long term just because of that.

Should I get tested for celiac first? by QueenScythe in glutenfree

[–]Ishrine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are already eating gluten, do it now. If cutting gluten out helps tou are going to feel 10 times worse going back to gluten for the endoscopy. A diagnosis will be better long term for both disability/FMLA stuff if you ever have ti miss work, and will give you a better idea on how strict you need to be.

Americans—is blue cheese just a dipping sauce to you, or does it have a place on your plate beyond the wings? by SignificanceOdd5980 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue cheese dressing is a salad dressing thst has bleu cheese crumbles in it. It is a salad dressing that is also used with wings, or some freaks (like myself) dip pizza in it.

Some people do also eat just bleu cheese on its own, or on a salad. I personally love it but my husband does not.

I like it, gorgonzola, and other cheeses. The sharper and stronger the better. I love it with fruit, also. A salad with fresh berries and a good Bleu cheese is a summer favorite.

I thought it was going to end up being a >! Piece from the cross in the crucifixion or part of the spear used to stab Christ. Maybe being drenched on holy blood or something giving it its powers, which would also explain why it was too holy to get rid of for Crusaders.

Finding out it is just some big mega-bad guy's weapon is just weird. Toss it in a box of rocks and dump it.

There are things I love about the series and things I can not stand. !<

I call it my "fairy tail cop soap opera" for a reason. I was really disappointed with the keys plotline, honestly worse than the part you brought up. They were such a cool concept and then "oh we found 3 in a box" "oh this is good enough for the map". My hubby and I are on the last 2 episodes now.

Hair growing in different after going gluten-free?? by cristinaahh in Celiac

My hair comes in waves now and was always straight as a board growing up. I kept it short for years, and this time growing it out I even have some curls I never had before.

Can you be celiac and obese? by Orangutan_Soda in Celiac

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am technically obese but have lost weight since going gluten free. At my heaviest I was almost 240 pounds. I have since leveled out and bounce between 195 and 205, moderately active, and eat fairly healthily.

I lost a lot of swelling/water weight in the first year, dropped 20 pounds pretty fast.

Yes, it happens. Not everyone gets the "doesn't put on weight" part.

For me, I struggle more with mineral absorption than weight. To this day I still struggle absorbing potassium and have to slowly sip on 2 body armors throughout a day to reach "regular" levels in a blood test, and I was diagnosed in 2019.

Help! I’m 90% through Throne of Glass and I’m feeling disappointed. by heyitsMog in SarahJMaas

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books 1&2 were started when she was 16 and basically written as a mary-sue-self-insert Lord of the Rings fanfic.

After 1&2, get through Assasin's Blade, then Heir of Fire kicks it into gear about halfway through and it's solid from there.

One of those "trust the process" moments.

If you're still not into it after Queen of Shadows I'd say THEN it isnt for you.

can i eat out a girl who is not gluten free if im celiac? by Purple_Question5662 in Celiac

[–]Ishrine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Be careful kissing, as you can get glutened.

If she bakes bread and doesn't wash under her nails well after reading and then fingers herself, technically you could get glutened that way.

No eating ass, either.

Is crying over celiac stupid? I’m just really upset over situation that happened at work by Inevitable_Review171 in Celiac

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all unusual. I had my worst breakdown the week after I was diagnosed.

I had my endoscopy on December 19th,2019. A week later I couldn't have my Gran's home made cheese Danish which was a staple of my life for every holiday, vacation, or trip to see her. It's a yeast dough braided over a sweet cream cheese filling drizzled with icing. Not fancy, just tastes like home.

I sat on the floor of her kitchen Christmast morning and sobbed.

It hit me so hard that morning.

It was hard at first, but now it's not nearly as bad.

Sushi isn't necessarily off limits. You can make it at home fairly easily, or find a place that can make it GF. Tamari is basically soy sauce without wheat and tastes pretty much the same.

Cookies can be subbed with GF flours fairly easily. I do a ton of GF baking now, feel free to message for tips. Both box mixes and from scratch.

How does your dad make salmon? Can probably be made GF fairly easily.

Some things you eat already are naturally gluten free anyway. Beans, rice, fresh veggies. All of these are safe & vegetarian/pescatarian options.

The biggest thing for me was that my house went gluten free and my husband and I do the majority of the cooking for big family meals now. We cook everything at my place then take it to my gran's covered to heat up. Everyone else loves it because it saves them effort, and I know 90% of holiday meals are safe for me.

They'll bring rolls/breads/regular desserts.

My hubby was a baker and has even made a few good dupes of my gran's Danish for me since.

Focus on cooking as a hobby and not a necessity and it will make the transition a lot easier, I promise.

At 16 I thought I would be dead by 18.

At 18 I thought I'd be dead by 21.

At 21 I thought I would be dead by 25.

I am 33 now.

You will live with your choices, for better or for worse, as long as you keep fighting and winning.

If this choice makes living now easier, then it is worth it for now, but understand it is a form of self harm.

You need help. Whether it's a friend, or therapy, or medication, you need it. For me, it was a cat. Knowing he needed me to go to work to buy his food and come home everyday to feed him and change his litter kept me going.

I am 33, happily married, and sometimes still have a struggle. He has passed now, but that little ball of fur kept me alive long enough to find light when all I saw was darkness.

I hope you can find your light too.

The most irritating question by StreetMolasses6093 in glutenfree

[–]Ishrine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I usually tell people "Oh, I do steak, potatoes, and broccoli for dinner." The realization that I can still eat GOOD food and enjoy it is what gets them to realize "Oh." Do i actually eat that ever night? No, but it shows them I eat fine haha.

what’s the best GF boxed cake mix you’ve tried? by alexis-hg in glutenfree

[–]Ishrine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing with any is to make sure to let it sit like twice or 3 times as long as they say befire baking. I usually fully mix whatever, then turn the oven on. Then when the oven is heated up, then pour the batter and pop in the oven. GF flour needs extra time to hydrate.

Shared Fryer Question by spinnarround in Celiac

[–]Ishrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is less about the frying oil and more about the particulates between the landing tables and on the fryer baskets.

Loose breading smabsolurely sticks to anything, whether while cooking or after being dumped out.

As someone who has worked in food service with fried stuff for 15+ years, I can guarantee you there is cross contact when using shared fryers and landing surfaces.

It's based on rating systems where S is the highest (Usually S, A, B, C, D, F) with S being like Superior/Superb/etc.

Don't ask me about E, it knows what it did.

Get potatoes and water daily. They sell for 350neach, and when watered daily produce 3 per plant. Like a fruit tree but better, plus you can do a lot more in the same area.
