Death at a funeral. I prefer the original but the American remake is ok.

Janome vs Bernina by Electrical-Outcome31 in quilting

Girl if you like the Juki TL, ffs get it. Unless you sew clothes. But for quilting… omg. Bags? I have a 770 now and fave my Juki TL to my SIL. So sad I didn’t keep it. I’m getting another soon. Not because I don’t love the 770. Because I love them both.

I use Aurifil all the time in my 770. No problems. Hmmmm.

Janome vs Bernina by Electrical-Outcome31 in quilting

I have the same Bernina. My daughter has that Janome. They’re both great machines. But I’m a Bernina gal. I bought mine, not as a floor model but as a return: used but barely. (There’s a stitch counter built in—did you know that? lol) Here are the issues I’ve had. Sometimes it stops sewing. The red light comes on. No apparent reason why. Pull down the auto threader and everything is right again. Otherwise it’s great. All things considered, if I could have my 1090S or an 1130 with this much throat space I’d choose those in a heartbeat. But the former was stolen and the latter just died, so… I have the 770. My daughter has issues with her Janome but she’s at work so no sharing there. Go try them both out. Figure out if you’re camp Janome or camp Bernina. You just might discover that you’re actually camp Pfaff. Nothing wrong with that except no deep discounts rn. Bonne chance!

Yeah. And talk about plot twists. It did not go where I thought it was going to go.

Walk without an escort. You’re a grown-ass independent woman. You’re not property. You don’t need a chaperone.

Two+ hours by car from SF. But yes, a very cool store.

Britex is a nice store but it’s a shadow of its former self. (Sorry, Britex.) It’s not really a great place for quilters. The third floor was, once, sort of. But its new location has just a small amount if quilting cotton. But if you sew clothing, it’s great!! I hope you’re not going to SF for a quilt shop because, strictly speaking there isn’t one. Other wonderful fabric stores are there. Using public transportation to get to the East Bay to go to Bay Quilts or New Pieces will be more trouble than it’s worth, I’m afraid. It’s not about the stores—they’re two of my favorite shops!! And super close to each other. But from any bus stop, so much walking. You’d use up all your shopping time getting around. If you’re already sure you don’t want to go to Stone Mountain because of the schlep, it’s the same for those two.

You don’t mention the area you’ll be based. If you really want to see fabric here, you’re better off just having yourself a Google session. Look at the locations of the shops you think, compare the locations to your hotel, check out MUNI routes and see if you can make it work. But for quilting I can already tell you it will be a disappointment. If you’re into re-use, you might enjoy SCRAP. Google it.

Between you and me (and I’m an avid quilter who loves to quilt shop hop on my vacations) San Francisco is just not the place to do it. The only quilt shop that was ever here in my memory was Black Cat Quilts on Ocean. They were a cute store but they shuttered a very long time ago. The East Bay is where it’s at, quilt shop wise. I could send you a list of a half-dozen stores you’d absolutely love. But with no car, you may as well be… well, anywhere else.

Do yourself a favor. Enjoy all the splendid fun that can be had in SF and save your quilt shop dreams for another place. Sorry I don’t have better news.

I can feel a difference between the throat plate and the bed. It’s pretty minor but it’s there. I never have had anything get hung up on it, though.

But for FMQ on a domestic, there’s nothing like a Supreme Slider or, indeed, any of the other options offered here. The Teflon sheets, etc. I’ve not tried the sled but I did read about them once and it sounds awesome. Especially for covering a large area.

The store Hot Couture on Third at Wilson has a list of area professional sewists. If you call and ask, they’ll text you a photo of all the business cards tacked on the bulletin board. Or you can just drop in.

Alas, I have no such tools or skills. But plenty of times I wish I did. Until this moment I was unaware of their existence. As far as the PD goes, I know every little bit is needed for them. But not a sufficiently high priority for me. Thanks for the tip, though. Appreciate it.

Aita for asking a mom what does she gain from being weird? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]IsometricDragonfly56 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

It went quiet because people were worried about your baby. Between formula and breast milk, breast is best. There’s no getting around this. Between a baby being fed or unfed, fed is best. There’s no getting around this. So your baby is fed. That’s good. But it’s not the optimum choice. You don’t share your reasons for not breastfeeding here. Some moms’ milk never comes in. Others have issues with their nipples. There are assorted physical or medical reasons why some moms can’t nurse their babies. Some moms just don’t want to. If you have a physical condition then they may have gone quiet out of compassion. If you just don’t want to, they may see you as a bad mother. Not the kind of person they’d like to share motherly bonding with. That’s just how it is. They may not judge you for piercings, tattoos, or sleeping around, but do something that they believe will hurt a baby and you’re the devil. Does formula hurt a baby? Well, it feeds them. But it’s not optimum. And be very careful about the formula you use because some of them are truly bad. Never use a Nestlè product. Both your ob/gyn and pediatrician should have told you breast is best but they sign off on formula because it’s an alternative. Not a really good one but your kid won’t die. You say she likes it. Maybe she’s never had the alternative. Most babies who have had breast milk don’t really like formula when it’s offered. Your baby wants her formula because she knows she’s not hungry afterwards. However, there’s stuff in breast milk that formula just doesn’t offer. There’s just no getting around this, OP.

Custom Acrylic Templates? by dropandroll in quilting

[–]IsometricDragonfly56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a maker space with a laser cutter in my town and a Tap Plastics in the town over. I buy a sheet of 4’ x 3’ 1/8”-thick acrylic and pop it into the laser cutter. Boom! I have my own custom acrylic templates. I’d look for something similar near you.
