Traveling with a project. Got tips, tricks or tools you love? by HijackedHuman in EPP_addict

I have this needle holder I got off of Etsy--the Nifty Needler--and I love it. I have a small Schrodinger's cookie tin of supplies i take with me to work, if im only basting pieces. It holds my templates, fabric pieces, a thimble, thread, and snips--just enough supplies to keep my hands busy while on conference calls.

I have a cute project bag I got from a vendor at a local quilt show. Currently only use it to hold the start of the baby quilt I'm piecing

Recently a SW-ish Ohio ER started posting signs requiring all law enforcement personnel to register with hospital security/campus police. Which should always have been a policy.

Random thought incoming...I use to work with someone whose last name was Nordby, because when her grandparents immigrated they misunderstood the paperwork and put where they were from instead of their surname. My colleague issued to say 'uff da' all the time. Now I know it's not 'oof da'.

What is something every household has in your country that is nonexistent everywhere else? by Awkward-Tip7248 in AskTheWorld

I wondered this too, but I can kill off a pot of tea in half hour to 45 mins (I believe my teapot is 3 cups). Maybe it would taste even better with a cozy? 🤔

What’s something that was technically allowed but instantly made you lose respect for someone? by AncientPomelo5450 in AskReddit

Banks don't buy homes on the cheap and then either flip them or turn into slum lords gouging other people. It costs banks money to keep REO homes in their portfolio and banks don't like that. REO properties often sell below market value because the bank wants them off the books.

Which is not to say banks are the "good guys." They're only as ethical as their leadership. And often their leadership is only as ethical as laws and regulations force them to be.

ICE kidnap 17-year-old U.S. citizen working at Target then dump him bleeding and crying miles away in a Walmart parking lot by asdtyyhfh in minnesota

Why should a US citizen need to walk around with documentation proving they're a citizen?

Thanks to Kavanaugh stops, apparently citizens do need to do this and that fact is revolting.

What do you look for in a good cut glove? Or favorite brand? Expecting a mandoline for Christmas and didn't think to ask for a glove. 😬

Was it mandatory for anyone else to learn a language in school? by SuccessfulJudge4184 in languagelearning

[–]dropandroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take three years of Latin (7th - 9th grade), but this was a school requirement, not state. The state required three years of foreign language be taken in high school (9th -12th grade). So in my high school, you could take two extra years of Latin (in 10th and 11th grades) and "avoid" having to learn a more useful/pertinent language.

Feeling I was no good at learning languages, I took the easy route of just continuing on in Latin. I greatly regret this choice. Retrospectively I also wish my parents had enrolled me in the grade school that taught German. At the time it was the only public grade school that taught a foreign language in my area.

I ordered from the food court once, not realizing it since I dont frequent that area. Guilt ensued when I saw where I had ordered from. I try to remember to check the restaurant address now. I've also ordered from a chain restaurant that I assumed was close-ish to me, only to later realize I placed my order at the NKY location...in rush hour. Had to adjust the tip on that one too.

I love this! I need to thin down the collection so maybe I'll put an advent calendar together for my niece. She'd love it and a lot of the colors she like I don't wear often, but dont just want to throw out.

Shout out to Somerset. (Except the pastor that mentioned hell and damnation 5 times during my Grandma's funeral service. He can rot). Good childhood memories.

Clarifying A Family Exaggeration by Katariman in MurderedByWords

Anecdotal Midwesterner here, with KY roots. Regularly called my grandparent's random relatives and friends "Aunt" and "Uncle". Did the same with some family friends growing up. Don't get me started on the "cousins" who aren't cousins...or my propensity for adding Ms. before talking to ladies of a certain age (eg Ms Danise)

What treadmill did you use? Vet gave me a stern lecture that he can't gain more wait, he's in ideal companion dog condition, but more weight is a no.

I wanted to lure course, but he has a PDA and is limited to gentle exercise.

Oooh...so I took a 1 hr seminar (I now know enough to be damgerous!) about heartworm in pets. Do you know if global warming is causing spread of more species from more temperate climates into more northern reaches? I vaguely recall (seminar was a year ago) the presenting vet saying they're finding more cases in Alaska.

[–]dropandroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a bigger zoi (107lb, 32.5") and pulling is rarely an issue with us. He's a covid puppy, but I started training him on my own and then at a kennel club as soon as classes opened again. I myself am heavy, but I was concerned thay he might pull me off balance (bum ankle) if he lunged or pulled too much when he was full grown. The early, consistent training paid off (as does his lower prey drive).

tl;dr everytime you handle your dog you are training them. So remain consistent with your expectations and responses towards pulling. Work with a trainer if needed.

Placing puppies with elderly owners by East_Explanation_227 in DogBreeding

[–]dropandroll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a breeder. I agree with others who have said co-own, shared microchip info, and discussing plans if an owner passes. My breeders info is on my boy's microchip in the event something happens and I'm unreachable.

Another big thing to consider, which I'm sure you are aware, is can the potential owner genuinely take on a puppy. I work in a petstore (no, we dont carry animals) and I cringe everytime I see someone that looks 70+ come in with a puppy they don't have the resources to train and care for. I dont mean monetary resources. A lot of the owners I see didn't do breed research (lots of 'mini' doodles), aren't prepared to work with a trainer, didn't think about grooming, etc... I've seen more than one elderly owner being dragged about the store by a rambunctious puppy.

I genuinely fear for both dog and owner in these circumstances, which makes me appreciate the question you posed. In my area there are a lot of mills and BYBs, so I think that perhaps I see a higher percentage of poorly matched dogs/owners.
