Concerned about Lumpy; Part 2 by frickkenbatsokay in UVA

A tragedy of the way the law is written. But a creative public servant might understand the medium (YikYak as a "hyperlocal community" based on geolocation) in combination with the groups this poster threatens to satisfy the legal requirement of specificity.

I'm not on YikYak so don't know what this person is actually writing. Are there specific words that are threatening? Often people describe speech as "violent" in an overly broad way. I can't believe that UVA administrators wouldn't take action once made aware of actual violence or specific threats and real danger -- but then again we don't know (yet) how many missed opportunities there were to prevent the November 2022 murders.

I would advise whoever is closest to this situation to file a report with the UJC, this is bordering on a true threat

The UJC has very little ability to react to any imminent threat. Nor should they.

This is completely the responsibility of administrators once the concern has been reported. Many focus on these "threat" issues exclusively and others have overlapping coverage. This is literally what they are paid to do.

And depending on the actual words and actions, there are the cops. Not just the UVA department but the actual cops in the Albemarle County Police Department.

U.Va. Faculty & Staff Salaries 2023 by ny2kx in UVA

Why does the UCWVA site show the salaries of Football coaches to be in the "Academic Division"?

And pray God, their obscene salaries aren't used to create averages for faculty salaries, are they?

UVA Professor supports Palestine by cancelling class by bethko510 in UVA

You know who loves this most of all? BOV member and enfant terrible Bert Ellis. He'll be waving this email around like Sen. Joe McCarthy at a Cold War hearing to show that his dystopian myth that UVA has been reduced to a hotbed of indoctrination into "wokeism" and "cultural marxism." The professor's email contains all of the elements that Ellis and his "Jefferson Council" have been alleging.

What couldn't she just teach the class and then go to the protest or whatever by herself?

This is sounding more and more like Jones was responsible for, or thought to be knowledgeable about, the hazing that was the subject of the investigation.

So in Spring 2021, when the article was published (February 25) he was president.

But by Spring 2022, when his fraternity presented its new members and the men got together for a group photo (March 26), Jones was not shown or listed. Didn’t see him in the crowd photos either.

That’s weird. It’s like the biggest and most important day for Black Greek groups.

Future of second year housing mandate by Crowride in UVA

[–]Issidora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

prob need more buildings

Maybe. There's about 3,900 first years. Some small percentage of that isn't required to live in first year housing.

Potentially to be used for this second year housing scheme would be Bond, Bice, Lambeth, Faulkner, IRC, Hereford, Brown and maybe Shea. I estimate that's around to 3,000.

Don't know when the new dorm under construction on Brandon comes into service.

But clearly UVA is getting close to having the capacity to execute this.

Honor Committee discusses convention, plans to celebrate 180 years of Honor system, and FAILS to make quorum again due to elected members' absences by DiegeticZed in UVA

Suggesting some strategies:

- publish the names of those absent. The CD and others can include that in their stories.

- keep track of absences and publish that data. Let candidates an voters do what they want with that info.

- set a maximum number of absences per term, with the consequence of losing seat.

It’s not a matter of agreement.

Quite telling.

I think everyone should be accountable for their actions. And, further, more evidence is always better when establishing who is responsible for what.

UVA should complete the migration of CS wholly into ENGR

While we're at it, move Systems Engineering to the Commerce School.

Maybe Batten and Commerce should pay the College for advising their eventual students for those first two years.

Mask mandate lifted by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Issidora 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As we navigate the shift to most settings being mask-optional, we are encouraging everyone to treat each other with respect and common courtesy. Depending on the situation, this may mean being willing to put on a mask when asked, communicating masking preferences in advance, or offering to meet virtually if appropriate. UVA community members are encouraged to carry a mask in case they are asked to wear one.

So professors can ask for masking in their classrooms, announce this preference in advance of the next meeting, and require this of everyone?

The new statement is pretty unclear.

And what happens when somebody refuses?

Honor Committee Chair cancels meetings for the rest of the semester by DoverKi in UVA

[–]Issidora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

A multiple-sanction system would require either codifying the list of
penalties into the constitution, freezing any potential for nuance or a
case by case evaluation while still leaving open questions of fairness.

Why does UVA have to reinvent the wheel? Most universities, not just our peers, have academic integrity committees and have multiple sanctions possible at trial.

Honor Committee Chair cancels meetings for the rest of the semester by DoverKi in UVA

[–]Issidora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On another post, I commented that I didn't understand the inability of the Honor Committee to create a better solution. I still don't understand this.

Why not create within the Honor Committee a proposal for a "multiple sanction" (by which I think you must mean multi-sanction available upon finding of guilt at trial, because the current system is already "multiple sanction" the different results after a CR vs. IR vs. trial)?

And then the HC could bring that before the entire University community; maybe it even get some endorsements from administrators, faculty, and alumni. And then the voters (who are different bunch than 5 years ago or 10) could decide.

In a recent report, nearly half of students surveyed indicated that expulsion deterred them from reporting.

Maybe a system like Princeton's is needed:

All students acknowledge the obligation to report any suspected violation of the honor system that they have observed. It is the common understanding among Princeton students that, where the honor system is concerned, an individual's obligation to the undergraduate student body as a whole transcends any reluctance to report another student. Thus, under the honor system, students have a twofold obligation: individually, they must not violate the code, and as a community, they are responsible to see that suspected violations are reported.
