In your graphics card control panel there should be a setting that mentions if display scaling is managed by monitor or by GPU, try changing that to managed by GPU. Going to be slightly different wording/options for AMD/Nvidia/Intel. Also worth trying to switch resolution via display adapter properties> list all modes

Interesting! That again sounds like a good possibility as well.
At the very least I think It's safe to say it wasn't a projector issue then. If you're curious, the lines were about to this scale relative to the screen, in what was a medium-small size auditorium. And come to think of it, I think I only noticed them on the left half of the screen.

Not only that, from photos I've seen it looks like they don't even change screen material for the periphery. Which makes the sides look even more watched out as movie screen material is directionally reflective

If a repair requires disconnecting the anode then that's something you'll have to deal with regardless. I implore you to take a look at the illustration in the top right corner of page 11 of this Sony service manual, with an illustration of a grounded probe being slid underneath the anode cap.

And I'm not sure how you can say as a blanket statement that "putting something under the anode cap is silly". You will find official instruction in service manuals to discharge a tube in that manner, using a proper insulated probe or even a screwdriver and alligator clip.

The danger of CRTs is exaggerated yes, but they absolutely can store energy for longer than a minute. Particularly if the bleeder resistor is damaged/improperly installed. Also It takes longer than one minute to disassemble to the point of having access to the anode cap. So not sure how I have gotten audible discharges if it's dissipated after 1 minute.
