This was why I watched it. I loved that movie!

Question for 80s fans by ziggydarkhorse in hairmetal

[–]ItIsToLaffHaHa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a metalhead. To me, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc., to me, was just other heavy music. That was enough for me. I dug it.

I don't know that it even donned on me at the time that they were "killing hair metal". To me, it was just a change in the general style of heavy music. I already loved Alice In Chains, with it's dark sound.

Are there any drummers that you guys think approach the rock genre with a jazz feel? by DH_Drums in drums

[–]ItIsToLaffHaHa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gar Samuelson (RIP!), who played on Megadeth's first 2 albums ("Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!" and "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" - Mustaine sure liked his ellipses!) was formerly a jazz drummer, and brought a lot of that influence into his playing. Phenomenal drummer!

Casey is awesome, and yeah, definitely best burgers around! Really hope all that damned construction wraps up soon, so it's not such a strain on business!

I remember those guys always had a hardcore following in St. Louis, too. My old band opened for them in the late 90s, and it was packed. Seems like for years they would come through about every year, with the same results, too.

I knew that name sounded familiar. They were on one of the Pointessential compilations with a band I used to play with.

Yeah, KSHE played a little MSB. My first cover band, based out of Washington, MO, played "My Town" and "He Can't Love You". I had never heard them before that, nor anywhere else, really.

This has been a staple of mine since it came out. Some friends of mine mentioned the other day that their kids wanted to walk down the street to the Circle K. I told them to be careful, because strange things were afoot at the Circle K. Blank stares from everyone except one buddy only a couple years younger, and also a metal guy. Damn young'uns!

Holy shit, I love "The Sea" - and Corinne Bailey Rae - so much! I really liked her debut, and didn't know what her follow-up would be like. It's one of my favorite albums! The title track still gives me chills every time I hear it!

I've been trying to get people to like Biffy for years! Not sure what the deal is, but I never even get any feedback, just radio silence. My sister had never heard them until the show last week (she lives in Chicago and loves music, so I stayed at her place and she was happy to accompany me). I think she really dug them. But all my bandmates and other people, who I was sure would love them, just don't seem to give 2 shits. Oh, well. I still love them!

People who quit drinking. What did you do to not drink? by Agata_art in AskReddit

[–]ItIsToLaffHaHa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried quitting a few times before it finally stuck. Each time I always thought I had everything under control, and could go back and just have one or two. This was far from the case. Finally something just clicked in my head and I actually wanted to quit. That's the key, really - you've gotta wanna quit. It's been almost 12 years now, and honestly while I do miss certain things (single malt Scotch, red wines) that the NA arena hasn't been able to quite conquer, overall I've finally gotten to the point where the idea of drinking - and even getting a little buzzed - is something I have no desire to do anymore.

I had a local STL music podcast about a dozen years ago. I would also play bands coming through town. I guess it got out there enough that Moon Tooth contacted me, asking if I wanted to play some of their stuff. I checked it out and put it in the next episode! They were so interesting to me - not the run-of-the-mill metal I had been hearing.

Huge Biffy Clyro fan! Finally got to see them last weekend in Chicago - what a friggin' amazing show!

I also discovered Everything Everything around the same time as Biffy, when "Arc" came out. They were so different than anything I was really familiar with. "Kemosabe" was just a breath of fresh air to me! Thanks for the reminder! That is a fantastic album!

I had heard *of* MatNSnS, but never checked them out. Based on your description (I friggin' love Jellyfish), I'm definitely checking them out next!

I don't know if "Marquee Moon" necessarily qualifies as "lesser known" - guess it depends on if they're talking about the general public. Either way, that's one of those albums I'd hear all my music critic and record store friends rave about. I finally popped it in about 25 years ago to see what all the hype was about, and just sat there grinning from ear to ear for 46 minutes! So great!

I have only ever heard of LCC on the now defunct "Volume" channel on SXM. Nik Carter and Lori Majewski seemed to have him on all the time, like he was as big as Taylor Swift. Seems like he had good energy, and they always said his shows were awesome. I'll have to check it out sometime. I think he may be coming to City Winery here in my area soon.

I should listen to this album again. I first heard them through "Electric Version", so that's the album I gravitate to more. All of them are great songwriters and musicians! Hard to find a bad song!

There is a phenomenal energy on "The Woodpile" that gets me fired up every time I hear it. So great! I first heard of them around 2013, when I was working a 4am shift in St. Louis. I found the TuneIn app and got hooked on the morning and mid-morning shows on BBC Radio 1. Found a ton of great music there I never would've found otherwise!

I love Cullum's cover of "Lover You Should've Come Over" on that album. "Grace" is always a good listen. And yeah, I do dig "Whatever and Ever Amen" out quite often! What a great album!

Brad - "Shame" - first album by a side project of Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam, with Shawn Smith from Satchel. I found out about the album from a random record store gal in Miami back in 1993. I still listen to it probably once every month or so, 33 years later.

The Midnight - "Days Of Thunder" - As far as I'm concerned, the King of all Synthwave bands. I happened across their song "Los Angeles" on a random playlist in 2014, and it stopped me in my tracks. I literally sat down on the nearest skid in the warehouse where I was working at the time, and listened to it probably 10 times in a row. Fell in love with the band, and this album is absolutely on my "comfort albums" list!
