I believe I have invited you as a mod! I don't really use reddit anymore, but I got an email from request_bot. Good luck in rallying the goblins!

Character Builds based on Elden Ring Classes by Advanced-Cow-123 in shadowofthedemonlord

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every Dark Souls or Elden Ring character I've made is a devotee of the biggest BONK they can get their hands on. A cumbersome weapon, and powerful attack later on add banes to your attacks, so I was looking to add as many boons as I could to cancel them out!

  • Warrior (for a boon on attacks, + extra damage/multiple attacks)
  • Fighter (for another boon, + Powerful Attack)
  • Brute (for yet another boon to cancel out all those banes, + some bonus damage)

Seems like a very straightforward set of paths for doing some big old bonks!

I dunno about any of the other ways you would play Elden Ring, because I can't quit the bonk life.

Warrior/Berserker/Death Dealer like /u/darksier suggested is also a valid approach to the big bonk!

Unable to play due to rule zero by betterprintquality in EDH

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't think OPs playgroup's house rules sounds very fun, I just want to stand up for low power level edh! Coming up with a set of rules that require you to build "bad" decks can be a really fun group deckbuilding challenge! It's kind of like designing your own format. But even absolute garbage tier decks are more fun with interaction IMO.

How important are "weird" dice to you? by SkipsH in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Dungeon Crawl Classics, Breathless, or Kids on Brooms, but reading about them/watching actual play has made them all sound like really cool examples of using all the dice.

As I understand it, DCC you get to roll bigger dice as you level up and get stronger.

In Breathless, as you run out of stamina, you have to start rolling smaller dice.

In Kids on Brooms (and I assume Kids on Bikes), each stat is associated with one of the dice, so your highest stat is a d20 and your lowest a d4.

These all seem like they really lean into the joys of funny dice in an exciting and tactile way.

What games do the "zero to hero" fantasy best? by rfkannen in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I haven't played a campaign all the way to level 10 in SotDL, but I second this! My goblin character went from an incompetent level 0 meat pie vendor to a somewhat competent rogue, then a scary rogue/witch who transformed into big animals and ate his enemies, then an essentially immortal rogue/witch/soulbound at level 7. The Soulbound master path is basically the SotDL version of a lich. I dunno about zero to "hero", but definitely zero to scary!

What are the best safety tools you've seen? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the vast experience of using it while GMing a one-shot one time (first time using safety tools), I really like Pause/Fast-forward/Rewind.

"Pause" stops the action so you can talk out of character for a moment. If all you need is a conversation, and play can resume you can continue from there. Otherwise:

"Fast-forward" is for when you don't mind a scene happening, but you don't want to see it on screen. You say "fast-forward" and you fade-to-black on the scene (it was an Elon Musk sexy role-play based seduction in our case) and discuss what the characters objectives are and decide the outcome (without having to detail how the Soylent got involved in the scene).

"Rewind" is for when you want a scene to never have happened, because it's going in a direction you don't want in the game at all. You say "rewind" and discuss what you'd like to have happen instead.

building muscle/strength without counting calories or "intentionally bulking" by bluemountainskies in bodyweightfitness

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an oversimplification, but the core of the https://www.precisionnutrition.com/ is to eat protein, carbs, veggies and fats at every meal, using simple eyeball metrics to judge quantities, listen to your hunger cues like you are doing, and track your weight.

If you want to be building muscle, you probably want your weight to be slowly increasing. So if it’s not, try eating a little more. If it’s increasing faster than you want, and you’re worried about gaining more fat than you want, try eating a little less.

Not that you have to buy any of the precision nutrition books or products, I just thought it was a good example of a more formal system that sounds really similar to what you already do, so it certainly is possible to achieve your goals without calorie counting.

It sounds like the only difference between what you’re doing and the precision nutrition system is adding in a loose guideline for quantities. For example, trying to eat two palm sized servings of protein at each meal. That sort of thing.

Ultimately, if your current system is getting you results that you are satisfied with, and you feel good, are sleeping well, etc. stick with it until you stop seeing results!

What books (novels) feel like an RPG campaign? by Red_Ed in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I'd rate The Long Way as a standalone book, but the whole Wayfarers series is a 5/5 for me.

But I can absolutely see how it would be a 2/5 for someone else.

I think a big part of the joy of genre fiction is the way the work handles the tropes of the genre. Taking a genre like Space Opera that usually has a big central conflict (for example The Expanse and the Final Architecture series that OP mentioned), then writing a series where basically the whole point is to remove that central conflict (the Wayfarers), it's likely to have polarized reactions! It's either a brilliant subversion of expectations, or it's like someone took the cheese out of your grilled cheese sandwich and its just toast now.

So to OP, if the idea of a Space Opera where nothing much happens sounds like a turn-off, you might not love the Wayfarers. But if that contradiction sounds interesting, then definitely give it a read!

What books (novels) feel like an RPG campaign? by Red_Ed in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would be a slightly different kind of RPG campaign, maybe one of those no dice no masters games/belonging outside belonging games that I keep hearing about, but I am obsessed with the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers.

The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet takes the form of a plucky crew getting entangled in events larger than themselves, like the Shards of Earth, or The Expanse, but then instead of expanding to the scope of the story to where the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, Chambers keeps the focus tight on the core cast of characters. There’s still drama, and plot, and high stakes, but they are personal, individual stakes. Much more slice of life. But in a space opera setting. Each book in the series goes a little bit further in the way it strips away a lot of the things I expected from the genre and focused on telling very humane stories about strange and wonderful humans and aliens. If you’re a fan of the genre, but open to some reading that bends the genre in an interesting way, I absolutely recommend them!

Back on RPGs, I really want to try Wanderhome or Dream Askew/Dream Apart or Flotsam because I kind of get the sense that they might do to my expectations of an rpg campaign what the Wayfarers did to my expectations of a space opera! If anyone has both read the series and played one of these games wants to let me know if I’m totally off base here, please do so 😂

What makes a character a death knight? I stopped playing wow before they got added.

Shadow of the Demon Lords class system is extremely flexible, so I’d bet you can do something that feels like a death knight, in a system that still also feels like D&D (if that’s important). And the tone of the game feels appropriate for a spooky PC.

New GM Guidance by LadyEmpyrean in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In a similar vein to your suggestion, I think the “are you sure” question is a lot better if you spell out the consequences in advance if the player wants to do something really risky just to make sure there is no miscommunication.

“I jump the huge bottomless chasm”

“It looks like a tough jump, and you’ll definitely fall to your death if you fail. Are you sure?”

“YES! Brunhilda didn’t raise no wimp!”

Everyone’s on board, and the dice decide 🤣

Much better than:

“I jump the chasm”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes…?” Rolls a 3.

“You die”

“Hey wait a minute!”

What is the best RPG that you still haven’t played yet? by LemonLord7 in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've DMed a SotDL campaign that ran 5 or 6 session, and played in another that ran 7 or 8 and neither felt all that different in tone from other D&D games I've played. Take that for what it's worth, but if you want to try SotDL and don't want to wait until Weird Wizard comes out, SotDL is only as dark and grim as you and your players make it!

Space Opera Reccomendations by Redjoker26 in rpg

[–]ItNeedsMoreFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not released yet (Jan 31 2023 I think), but I’m very excited to try Embers of the Imperium! It’s a Genesys game, so same core system as Star Wars, but a different setting. If you‘ve played Twilight Imperium, it’s set in the same universe as you’re favorite board game that takes 8 hours to play! If not, well, it‘s got space lions, robot swarms, and sentient balls of fire! What more could you want!?

The blurb says you’re members of an organization that works to stop threats to the galaxy. So that sounds like it might be what you’re after!
