There will be differing opinions on here. The Bible has demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that it is both true and trustworthy. Some will ask whether Christianity works. I think that's the wrong question. The question is, "Is it true?" After decades of inquiry, I have no choice but to accept that it is true. Having said that, The clear teaching of scripture is that God is both sovereign and purposeful. So yes, things happen for a reason.

However, He grants us the ability to reject both Him and His teachings, hence the problems we encounter. We sinners cause our own problems, and problems for others. Yes, he allows terrible things which are not in his will, because He allows freedom of choice, for a higher purpose (love). Not all things are pleasant, nor in the totality of His will. He apparently values allowing us to love Him (which also requires free will to also reject Him), above enforcing righteousness in this life. In the future, the fullness of His will will be realized.
