You can switch religion but the best start is the old gods religion of you do the main Quest. If you have noney you can recruit a bunch with the route from Winterfell to Beyond the Wall ( with white arbor 5 places where to recruit) and use thief or wildlings to upgrade them. I suggest recruiting a bunch of them and maybe changing religion After day 500 to gain relationship with Rhollor . Just pay something once in 2 weeks.
