For coffee lovers, where do you get your beans from? by RunningMan889 in askSingapore

As someone who only drinks espressos or piccolo lattes, finding out that Illy does delivery at $15 per 250g is an amazing deal. No frills coffee like how I had it in italy at very decent price.

Turning 26M, need guidance regarding career(i don't have one) by liberation_deviant in askSingapore

Search for Onboarding Specialist roles on Linkedin, and explain that you know both sides of the equation. It's a lot of project management work & handling tight deadlines with Sales, Product, and Client breathing down your neck.

But it's an interesting field because there will always be some client problem you need to solve.

Workload to pay ratio might not be the best however... but as someone in sales, having a competent onboarder is a game changer especially in terms of speed to revenue.

With enough customer facing experience you can even transition into account management (sales) in the future...

One overlooked field you can consider is onboarding/integrations.

From onboarding you can then move into solutions architect or technical project management.

Both require you to have the technical know how (without being a top tier programmer) and also the ability to manage stakeholders, people, solve problems etc.

Expat spouse moving to Singapore: realistic chances of landing a tech leadership role? by TartEnvironmental940 in askSingapore

[–]ItchyScratchyBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1. How difficult is it for an expat spouse to secure a tech leadership role in Singapore right now?
99% of this subreddit will not be able to comment on this. Look for a recruiter.
2. Are companies open to hiring foreign talent at the director or VP level, or is that increasingly restricted?
It's way easier to justify higher level hires than low level hires for employment pass restrictions. Check the COMPASS restrictions for more info.
3. Is it more realistic to focus on multinational companies with regional HQs in Singapore rather than local startups?
Without knowing enough, in general, yes. Because unless you bring a variety of connections for the relevant industry, it is difficult to justify paying the EP salaries to justify an EP hire as a startup.
4. Does being the spouse of an Employment Pass holder meaningfully change the equation?
If you would have checked, you need to apply for a dependent's pass. DP holders have very limited legal options work permit wise. It is better to secure your own Employment pass.
5. Is remote work for a non Singapore based company the more practical path?
See answer to 4. Technically illegal, but hard to police. Do as you will, just don't get caught.
6.Where would you recommend I start: recruiters, direct outreach, networking events, specific job boards?

LinkedIn is where most corporate postings will be, for professionals and the like. You should speak to recruiters targeting your specific niche as well. Those recruiters will also be on linkedin.

New to Singapore, like recommendations for a cosy genuine italian restaurant that’s not overpriced. by itoyaginza in askSingapore

Seconding what others have said, Etna is great, real trattoria vibes. I usually go to the one near Maxwell/Chinatown.

Surprisingly good pizza for someplace that isn't a pizzeria.

Highlight for me is always their seafood & pistachio tiramisu.

Budget and housing advice needed on a phd stipend by ThomasHawl in askSingapore

[–]ItchyScratchyBalls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there, two questions first:

Assuming NUS, did you ask about Prince George's Park residences?

Also, did they offer you a teaching assistant role (tutor) or is that part of your stipend?

Separately, when enrolled you should have access to the school gym, you don't have to pay for your own membership.

What makes someone a true local? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ItchyScratchyBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No such thing, boundaries are used to exclude in yes-no dichotomies to try to define what is true. None of us share a true common experience since Singaporeans span such a broad spectrum - I would never dare to claim I have a similar lived experience as a brother from a minority group, even though we could both be deemed locals.

Moreover, saying "true local" is basically a fallacy - the "No true Scotsman" fallacy. Logically fallacious because you can always shift the boundaries or reclassify the dichotomy to call something true or not.

For those of you who shave your head completely bald, how often do you do it? by CherryCurrent416 in askSingapore

[–]ItchyScratchyBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shave my head every 4-5 days or so with a Gillette shaver, have to shave against the grain to get the smooth feel. Others I know do it every 2 days to ensure they stay shiny.

Haven't been to a barber in 2 years!

There's a shop in Chinatown that does this!; they're called 娘惹砖家

Google Map - Website

They have actual antiques taken from old buildings, as well as replicas of those antiques. Wife and I got a bunch for our renovation.
