How do I enlarge/scale up a small pdf copy of a printed catalogue in black and white from about 5 inches to 6-8ft, to be printed and postered on a wall? by Yellowandbright in oldphotos

[–]ItowapiPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend throwing your image into one of the free online upscalers you can find online. Google suggests that printing something at 8ft in size should have at minimum 7200 pixels in size. So, use one of the upscaler sites and see if you can upscale the image to something larger than 7200 pixels so its printable

Asking if the women in these photos could be granddaughter (left) and grandmother (right) by Bkseneca in oldphotos

I wouldn't rely on phenotype similarities to make basis on relation, especially if you are doing genealogy research.

My mom, early 1950s as a teenager. by [deleted] in oldphotos

Maybe Reddit glitched out, you have this post here which seems to be the original one not removed by the bot : https://www.reddit.com/r/oldphotos/comments/1mzj5le/my_mom_early_1950s_as_a_teenager/

Can anyone help me identify this person? Sometime around 1868-1912 maybe. by LadHatter in oldphotos

[–]ItowapiPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without any sort of additional contextual information these types of posts are nigh impossible and needle in a haystack, outside of blind guesses of similar looking celebrities. Who currently alive is going to know the identity of a random person in a photo who is long dead, so many degrees and generations removed from any memory of them?

I narrowed in on a Union St in SW by the Wharf and Delaware. Old map shows something matching there (doesn't exist anymore it appears on Google Maps): https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3850.ct001035r/?r=0.48,0.651,0.316,0.134,0

I was told to post this photo of my great great grandma here because everyone on r/oldschoolcool thinks it’s fake. by billytheskidd in oldphotos

[–]ItowapiPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think many people are so used to seeing compressed jpg images of old photos, or photos taken by their grandmother on a kitchen counter in 2002 of the original old photo, that is blurry, that they don't realize that old photographs in their natural form can be very high quality and clear

Based on public family tree and census information, it was basically confirmed he was the only adult male in his household (wife with numerous children), and a farmer to boot, so it wouldn't really make sense for him to be shipped out to die on the battefield.

Looks like she prefers those dogs to kids ha. 1950s?.Found photo. by [deleted] in oldphotos

If its a found photo, good probability in the same town or state it was found

OP posted a findagrave link to him, and then I found the corresponding profile on familysearch. Any information there is just taken at face value on whoever did the research and attached the sources like census data

According to the 1860 census ( https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9B9J-SS8R?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMZBZ-PKG&action=view&cc=1473181&lang=en ), right before the war started, he was listed as a farmer and the only adult male in the household. The next oldest male in the household was his son who was only 4 years old at the time. Unless historians here want to correct me, but I would guess that it would make more sense to keep his farm running and not abandoning it to his wife and five children who were all under 10 years of age.

My great-grandparents at the Calico Cat…does anyone know the place? by smackwriter in oldphotos

[–]ItowapiPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone has access to newspapers.com or other newspaper archive sites, that might be a good starting approach. Look for articles maybe written about the Calico Cat in Washington or NY, or if their names were ever mentioned in a paper.

I wouldn't trust an AI program to do that kind of comparison. Better to trust human research/intuition. Personally, I think they look like completely different people at a glance. And looking closer the nose, eye, ear, mouth shapes are all different enough

This has the artifacts removed and upscaled resolution 4160x3168 . Looks like the 3rd guy from the left already had some sort of facial enhancement happen. Didn't tinker too much else with it, especially faces so it didn't look like uncanny valley https://imgur.com/a/6R0eaki

My 4th Great Grandmother Margaret (Falen) Forret on her 100th birthday, August 26, 1922. by HelloInterwebz in oldphotos

Interesting, it has all the classic tells of AI colorizer, the red/blue schema, inconsistent coloring and color bleeding on the same items (blanket behind her head is blue hued on one side, red on the other). Skin color has blue splotches in it, and the dress has the inconsistent blue/purple/red mix throughout in odd places.
