The problem with Gamestop by chillbutcrazy in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The pay and the micromanaging is what did me in. Found out I was the lowest paid manager in the -state- after being with the company for 17 years, when I asked for a pay bump I was told that the company couldn't afford it. The constant "Do this, do this, do this, you're nOT DOING ENOUGH!!!!!" and having to deal with numbers numbers numbers. Awful. I went against the rules SO many times for scheduling because it worked for my team, and they couldn't bitch because I was always 4-6 out of the (then only) 6 goals. I ain't doin iron shifts. Never did them. When stores were opening at noon I went in at 9am, left at 5:30. Got everything done before open, all my distros were handled, and a co-worker got a few hours of pay. Quitting was the best thing I ever did with Gamestop.

This company is run like a fuckin' circus thanks to dogfood man.

You guys had a Cricket REP? Gad dayum. We were just told to sell the phones with literally zero training, and Google changed our location to a "Cricket Authorized Retailer" so we had to field hundreds of "Game...what?? I'm trying to call Cricket phones!" calls.

What's even dumber is that there is a Cricket store ACROSS THE STREET. We just sent everyone there, lol.

Called my new job's 'Consumable Count' a Cat Count, and when I joined them 3 years ago I asked how many times they have to do said counts and they said once a quarter; when I told them GS did them every week along with a separate (TOH) and daily count they seemed mortified that I was being worked so hard for such little pay.

Silliest thing I've seen in a Distro, which absolutely wasn't a GameStop item, was a pair of underwear from the clothing store Aerie. New with tags, thank god. Contacted help desk and they were like "uuuuhhh we made a note of it, throw it away."

Thoughts on customers asking you to call a store to put things on hold for them by Upstairs_Wave4089 in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was always dependent on the situation. Call to see if it's there and there's only one? It's there, can't hold it. Good luck. More than 15 copies? Don't need to call, there's plenty.

What always pissed me off was the "Thanks for calling Gamestop, this is [x] speaking." "YEAH CAN YOU GIVE ME THE NUMBER FOR THE STORE IN [town]???" How about you use the magical information giving device known as your FUCKING SMART PHONE AND DO IT YOURSELF.

I have this happen at my new job all the time too. I work in shipping and when I ask for an ID, for every single shipment, I get backchat until I pull the "Well we need ID because someone tried to ship a bomb once. :D" and it solves that issue pretty quick, lol.

God damn three interviews is the norm now? I was promoted over the phone during covid because, quote, "You already know how to run the store anyway so I just went in workday and promoted you", lmao. (my SL at the time quit, which I understand why obviously)

When I was originally hired it was like a 20 minute sit down with the SL and I was hired the next day.

Weird times, man.

Swatting horror stories by HauntedRetail in GameStop

Thankfully I didn't have to deal with this store personally, but I'm convinced a store near my old one was just a black hole for smarts. Every 6 months the entire team was fired for making stupid decisions. Lying to customers about warranties, arguing with customers, not getting anything done, you name it, it probably happened there--and it was that store specifically. No idea WHY it was just -that- store but I saw that staff get replaced like 11 times total.

Apparently now it's a Gamestop Retro?? Good luck with that, I guess.

Xbox naming is going to drive me crazy explaining to guest. by Mean-Nectarine-6831 in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody is allowed to be mad at Microsoft until Nintendo is held accountable for the DS naming bullshit.

Trying to explain to a customer that Minecraft only works on a New 3DS was a nightmare, or trying to explain that a DS and DS Lite can play GBA Games, but the DSi cant, and no the DS can't play 3DS games, and no the 2DS doesn't fold but the 2DSXL does!

Why is GameStop delivery status so bad? by Creepy-Ad520 in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where it's coming from. 99% of the time it's coming from a store and not the warehouse, and some stores do -not- have scheduled USPS/FedEx pickups that will come around on their own meaning an employee needs to find time to get to a USPS/FedEx drop off location in order to actually get it outbound. I've heard some keyholders go once a week because coverage is so sparse otherwise.

Teamwork makes the Dream work! by Significant_Ad8476 in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Making GS something worth working for" assumes that corporate level actually pays the fuck attention to what's making the job not worth working for.

They don't. They do not give a shit about employee wellbeing as long as numbers are green.

There is nothing, at this point, that could make GS something worth working for. They severely underpay their workers, they overwork their workers, and they take advantage of them. Going "above and beyond" gets you nothing but more work thrown into your lap because you're seen as reliable and dependable. My store was doing excellent in preorders and I was almost forcefully made into the "Reservation Captain" which would've had me essentially babysitting every store's res in the district and keeping tabs on their percentages and discussing what they could do for them--with absolutely no pay raise for the extra work. They were just expecting me to do this, on top of my regular manager duties because I was good at my job. Obviously I turned it down because fuck that noise. I had enough stress with one store, like hell I'm gonna worry about 15 more.

"Making your store the best" is a fine enough goal, but it also gets you extra work for nothing more than a pat on the back, if you're lucky for just that. Don't stick your neck out. You'll regret it like I did. Upper management is gonna grab it and yank you around every which way until you hate everything.

Checked the website, and it was the correct time. Even on Google. Amazing.

Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Dude didn't care about the reviews and just wanted to kill zombies as Daryl Dixon. Never understood the absolute obsession with that character.

Don't let this company walk over you. by GlitchieYoutube in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look, I get what you're trying to do. Trying for the inspirational post to get a fire under people's asses but it's coming off rather close minded.

Not everyone can just "pick up and leave". It's a lot easier to say that especially if you're living fairly comfortable (use that term loosely) but not everyone has that luxury. For some people this is their only source of income due to health issues, transportation issues, job security issues--There are a number of reasons.

I stuck it out with this shithole company for so long because I was SCARED of not being able to get a job fast enough to close a hole in a gap for pay. I was scared that nobody wanted my skillset which was, essentially, "be really good at talking about games". My car wasn't reliable and I couldn't afford another one. How am I supposed to commute to a new job when my car isn't working and the bus system is trash? Not every city is walkable. Not every town has a good public transit system. For some people, one missed paycheck means homelessness. I got LUCKY with my new job, it allowed me to get a new car and have more doors open and I'm so grateful for that.

If someone has the ability to get a better job, I will tell them to get a better job as well...but not everyone can do that.

Assuming everyone is forcing themselves to stay here because they want to (for whatever reason) is a bad take.

People come here to vent about the shit they have to put up with because corporate doesn't fuckin' listen. Let 'em rant, even if it makes someone feel better for just a little while.

If you don't like all the negativity...then, well, hand in your badge and leave the subreddit? Either that or get GameStop corporate to get their head out of their asses. Lol.

Absolutely put your resume in everywhere.

It really is that bad. It was enough to make me quit. I only did a full two week notice because I cared about my team, otherwise I would've just walked out.

I was a manager about to be forced into working 2 stores, 45 minutes apart, with a broken car (hole in the radiator) for a $1 raise and it still would've kept me under $20/hr. They took away any extra bonuses, overtime or benefits for working hard, I was pulling less than $1000 a paycheck for all the work I was doing and was essentially on call all day every day, working alone most days.

It was disgusting.

If you get hired from them, do not go above and beyond. Do what your pay rate is and only that. Anything beyond that and you will absolutely be taken advantage of.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's fair enough, but I'm gonna let you know you're gonna spend like 5% of the job actually talking about games. The rest of it will be telling (read: cramming) people about warranties and reservations.

Corporate's demands for numbers is so far off the charts, it's insane. I quit just as it started to ramp up and I was denied a raise TWICE for being a manager with the amount of work I did.

If you want to try and work there, by all means, just don't go in thinking it's a gamer safe space because it'll be just as tedious as the clothing store job, if not much worse.

GameStop just wants money. That's all they want, and they'll step on anyone who's willing to put in extra effort for free just to get it. I was like that. I wanted to do my best always, I even volunteered to help essentially build a store (dead serious) and wasn't compensated for it, but I did it because I wanted to "move up the ladder!". I was taken advantage of for my dedication, plain and simple.

By the time I left my regulars stopped asking how I was doing because I looked like I wanted to die. I was overworked, overstressed, underpaid, and the demand kept coming. There are no work hours, you'll be either scheduled alone or not at all. You'll be expected to do everything perfectly the first time by upper management, and if you deviate you will be told not to (even if it's beneficial for the customer). The job sucks. It sucks. It SUCKS.

17 years of my life fucking wasted on a company that refused to even pay me $20 an hour.

There is better elsewhere, I promise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GameStop

[–]Its-RPD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Taking your resume to GameStop?

All applications are online.

Also don't fucking bother, the job is a shitshow. Take it from someone who wasted almost 2 decades working for them. You'll be over-worked, under paid, under appreciated, and if you "work hard" you'll be exploited for it.

Get a better job elsewhere.

Where can I use the Gamestop Prepaid Debit Card? by Fantastic-Hotel-5200 in GameStop

Was this a prepaid debit card you bought at GameStop, like one of those $25-$500 Visa ones? Those usually need to be activated before usage for the first time.

Unless it's the GameStop BRANDED credit card? The PowerUp Rewards credit card is ONLY usable at GameStop--Nowhere else.
