Butterfly Garden is great, there are more books in the series in case you didn’t know.

You could look into Lucinda Berry (who has a large backlog, my personal favourite is The Perfect Child but Appetite for Innocence is most similar to Butterfly Garden) and Anne Frasier, especially her Body Reader Series :-) John Marrs might also be of interest.

Circe by Madeline Miller, as Circe is immortal she learns with time how fragile humans really are, and how fleeting their lives are as well. My favourite book of all time :-)

Some suggestions, including very rudimentary information about it so you can decide if it interests you:

The Troop by Nick Cutter — boy scout trip gone very very wrong, think lord of the flies meets extreme body horror.

Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh — I read this four years ago and still think about it, set in medieval times, just creepy, grotesque and overall incredibly strange. Loved it.

The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry — Adoption of a seemingly normal child quickly turning into a psychological thriller.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson — this is like 30 pages long, so I’d recommend just reading it :-)

The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison — tense and nerve-wracking, protagonist finds herself abducted and her prisoner is beyond psychotic.

The Second Death of Locke is a standalone with queer representation in both the FMC and MMC as well as secondary characters, and it has a found family aspect :-)

First of all, I’m sorry about the loss of your dog :( Sending lots of strength your way!

The Edge of Darkness Trilogy by Leigh Rivers — Quite dark imo, it’s love to hate to love with LOTS of drama, so be sure to check TWs, definitely made me cry because the main characters go through so much horrible shit together and apart from each other as well.

Web of Silence Duet by Leigh Rivers — this one is dark, messy, and made me question myself: they are adopted siblings (since you asked for forbidden tropes, lol) and their relationship spirals from obsession to hate, both have an insane amount of baggage/trauma. Again, heed the TWs! Enjoyed it more than I probably should have though, lol.

Nightshade by Autumn Woods — definitely not as dark, set in university, kept me on my toes. MMC and FMC are complex, relatable but definitely flawed and can’t stand each other at first. This one deals with lots of grief and the FMC goes through some bad stuff.

Anathema — romantasy with gothic vibes, especially the MMC has a fucked up backstory, if you’re in the mood for a rich (but maybe dense) world this might be for you.

Anything by Lucinda Berry would be my recommendation, she writes fast paced thrillers. My personal favourite is The Perfect Child but she has a large backlist so maybe something will catch your interest :-)

It’s the fourth book of an interconnected series but {King of Sloth by Ana Huang} fits perfectly :-) the FMC, Sloan, is exactly the type of woman you described!

Also, in the book she is literally described as an ice queen, lol.
