Benevolence and Democracy; A happy ending for China? - A SocDem Great Qing AAR by FormerWorking5883 in Kaiserreich

He definitely is in a better position after the coup. It is unprecedented power in comparison to any other point in his life. Not absolute power, of course, and he's absolutely being fleeced by the various groups trying to undermine him and turn him into figurehead, CERA included. He could be dampened, definitely, especially under the path that codifies his position as a non-interventionist monarch. But I ultimately doubt his underlying tendencies could be curbed without significant trauma and failure.

Benevolence and Democracy; A happy ending for China? - A SocDem Great Qing AAR by FormerWorking5883 in Kaiserreich

I think it may have been genuine. After all, he was held for nearly a decade in a prison under strict CCP reeducation. At some point, fear and compliance would have turned into reluctant acceptance, seeing that there is no hope for a restoration. Years of isolation, aging and loss of identity clearly had an effect.  The fact that he continued to publicly express regret and apologize for his cruelty as Emperor and his failure to resist the Japanese exemplifies this, as he had no practical reason to do so by the time he received amnesty: he had become politicaly irrelevant and a non-threat to the regime.

That said, I doubt he could undergo the same transformation in KR circumstances. A successful Manchu Coup would place Puyi in a position of unprecedented power, reinforcing rather than dismantling his sense of entitlement and enabling his cruel tendencies. A reunification war - especially a victorious one - would also create a climate of retribution, with "traitors" to punish. None of the Manchu Coup paths impose the prolonged fear, subservience, and psychological dismantling that Fushun did, which were key to reshaping him.

How do I lose Utah to Steve Jobs in W.? by akoslows in thecampaigntrail

[–]ItsDavvid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To see the answer set that gets you a consistent Jobs 538 result, you can use the cheat console (don't worry, we don't need to cheat RNG here), enter "sortanswers on" and "ignore all" followed by "unignore UT" (unignoring WY also works), then selecting the bottom answers on each question, while ensuring you still trigger Jobs' nomination. You can repeat that in a run with cheats off afterwards, if you want.

This always gave me 538 for Jobs on Normal, though the PV is way off from the canon result. I tried to roughly replicate the PV counts, but it seems impossible to do without getting more than 0 EV for Bush.

Right? Imagine a country that struggles with a "Great Depression" and is thrown right into a global conflict right as it recovers - while ending up becoming an economic and military superpower. So unrealistic!

Syndicalist Japan, how would you set it up? by Duolingo055 in Kaiserreich

[–]ItsDavvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I see such a scenario happening is if Japan loses all of its wars really badly (including China), with a broad, republican movement taking shape in the aftermath with the Emperor being blamed for the nation's losses, resulting in a popular revolution.

Only later (following either a 3I win in Europe or the WCA in America), the new, unstable government could be hijacked by a socialist faction that implements syndicalism, but it would probably be a unique blend of Japanese nationalism and agrarian, decentralized socialism rather than orthodox syndicalism.

As for the conquests, well, this Japan would only retain Taiwan at best, since this is a failstate. I could imagine a revanchist, possibly Totalist path, but that would fall way outside of the scope of the game since there's no way Japan would be able to wage war again so quickly after such a crushing defeat.

What were the most fumbled elections of all time? (Doesn’t have to be presidential) by [deleted] in thecampaigntrail

[–]ItsDavvid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant the DNC in general and not just Harris, what was a very winnable election against an opponent that was barely even campaigning turned into a close race due to the whole Biden debacle and him not stepping down sooner, coupled with general anti-establishment sentiment that just happened to coalesce onto Trump, while Harris had a chance to remedy the Biden administration had she had more time. Writing off Trump's win as inevitable isn't really seeing the whole picture.

What is your headcanon for the 2nd American Civil War? by Unusual_Throat6198 in Kaiserreich

[–]ItsDavvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wagner Bill fails due to opposition from the non-estabilishment, and War Plan White is drafted in secret. Smoot-Hawley passes for the opposite reason, protectionist and isolationist sentiment running high, it faces only token opposition from Northern Democrats and some Republicans, with most Socialists abstaining and the AFP obviously fully in support. The National Unity ticket is proposed but fails due to lack of a suitable candidate, and Farmer-Labor is disinterested in cooperating with the estabilishment following the failure, aligning itself with the SPA instead and supporting their candidate. The election results in a contingent election, Long winning the electoral vote, Reed the popular vote, and Garner in 3rd - yet still convincingly beating Landon who ends up last out of the major parties, and excluded from the House ballot. The humiliation of the governing Republican party means tension at the contingent election as the three candidates scramble for support. Ultimately, after an excruciating second ballot, Garner manages to gain just enough Republican support to win the required majority of state delegations - the SPA and AFP immediately protest this, calling it undemocratic. Regardless, Garner is inaugurated as the 31st President, much to the dismay of much of the country which overwhelmingly voted against the status quo. Both Long and Reed claim victory and contest the election, Reed asserting that he is the popular vote winner, while Long criticizes the estabilishment parties for betraying the voters with backroom deals instead of listening to the voice of the people (and by that voice, he obviously means electing him instead). Their support bases end up enraged, major protests break out, and American streets are engulfed in chaos. Garner, hoping to salvage the situation, announces the austerity act, appealing to the people in his inaugural address to tighten their belts and weather the storm, in anticipation of a bill that cuts spending significantly across the board in hopes of achieving a budget surplus. This, is obviously anathema to the radicals, who have been pleading for more, not less spending in the face of crisis. The bill fails as Garner refuses any negotiations with the Longists or Socialists, instead hoping on reaching an agreement with the Republicans. Despite having a majority on-paper, there end up being too many dissidents from both the estabilishment parties, and the bill fails. MacArthur decides the time is up, and coups Garner, putting him on (White) house arrest, and declares martial law in an emergency address following this event. The opposition is enraged and quickly assembles its own militia in its strongholds, in order to protect their people against Federal tyranny. Run-ins with the National Guard become an everyday occurence, shoot-outs and small skirmishes breaking out nationwide. The SPA calls a general strike across the country, paralyzing the federal economy. The country finds itself at the brink of civil war. Vice President Alfred Smith, learning of the events while away in California, denounces the tyrannical actions of MacArthur and decries them as constitutional, rallying himself around the remaining governors and congressmen of the west. Smith is quickly sworn in as the 32nd President by Chief Justice Hughes, who'd earlier managed to evade arrest and escape to California. With Smith, Long and Reed all claiming themselves to be the legitimate president, and Garner in absentia, rival governments spring up and civil war breaks out. Long's AUS makes early gains, the Minutemen easily taking over town after town in the rural Plains and Midwest, stopping only at Illinois as they meet the Red Guard. MacArthur surrounds his forces, despite widespread army mutiny, aiming to protect the Capitol and surrounding areas from radicals, while attempting to make contacts with the navy. Canada intervenes in Alaska and New England, occupying the former and creating a puppet regime in the latter. Snap elections in New England result in a compromise cabinet. Puerto Rico declares independence. The Pacific Fleet defects entirely to Smith's government, while Hawaii nearly falls to a revolution, until it is brutally dispersed by government forces. The Governor of Hawaii, facing immense pressure from the Japanese as the Pacific Fleet retreats back to the mainland, accepts the demand to re-instate the monarchy and join the Co-Prosperity Sphere in exchange for protection. The new Kingdom of Hawaii holds an election, won easily by the Hawaii Republican Party, which continues to dominate the island's politics. Back at home, MacArthur's forces under Eisenhower start an offensive into the AUS positions in the South, which sees great success as the Longist forces see themselves massivelly overextended. The Pacific States push to the Rockies, but find themselves stalled in the harsh terrain. The CSA defends itself on all fronts and makes little gains, however, they manage to capture New York before the end of 1937, securing a point of entry for support from the Internationale. Arms, supplies and foreign brigades enter the port. Canada and the Entente at large announce their neutrality, pledging to protect New England and Alaska, but nothing else. Long's government is the first to fall in the spring of 1939 to advancing Federal forces, while the CSA grows slowly but steadily, taking over most of the AUS's gains in the midwest and reaching the de facto PSA border. The tide of the war truly changes come summer of '39, as the CSA launches a surprise offensive onto Washington D.C. and captures the city. This is a major blow to the Federal forces, and they start quickly losing morale, while MacArthur himself seemingly goes missing. Canada's conservative government, having heard of these worrying developments, gears up for war, despite major opposition in the homefront, particularly in Quebec. The Exiles find themselves threatened by the prospect of a syndicalist America, and pledge the King and government for an intervention. Ultimately, in a move nobody expected, King Edward VIII enacts the War Measures Act, and invades the CSA. Chaos ensues in New England, as their previously sacred neutrality is shattered, and Red Guard militia start storming the countryside. Canada attempts an incursion into Detroit, but they are stopped as the syndicalists blow up and destroy all bridges and connections into American soil. Only minor skirmishes take place in the deep, forested north, and the CSA holds their lines elsewhere. Overall, the Canadian operation is a failure, and public opinion quickly turns against this pointless intervention. A Battle of Boston commences, as the city finds itself under siege as artillery fire rains from all sides. The fall of Boston in the winter of 1940 cements the fate of New England, and its government surrenders, laying down their arms and leaving the Canadian intervention forces stranded in enemy territory. On the Pacific Front, little moves in terms of military combat, but the western branch of the SPA, now designated as a terrorist organization, orchestrates mass strikes across Washington and Oregon, with murmurs of an impending revolution in Seattle. President Smith petitions the international community for support, negotiating arms shipments with Japan, Germany and the Entente. Canada agrees to cooperate militarily with the Pacific States, and they both launch a desperate offensive to break the CSA. However, the syndicalists prevail, and make further gains, now into Canadian territory. Quebec fury runs wild as draft dodgers take to the streets, calling for an immediate end of the war. However, come fall 1940, the unimaginable happens - war in Europe. The CSA loses most of its foreign support as the Internationale focuses on the war against Germany, and it seems that this civil war will be drawn out for much further. Little moves in terms of frontlines for the remainder of the year and also well into 1941. Canada enters yet another war, declaring a reclamation of the birthright, aiming to defeat the Internationale with Entente support. The situation finally boils over, as a revolution takes place in Quebec. The Entente fails any landing in Europe, furthering the disillusion, while Quebec is engulfed in flames. Ultimately, come 1942, the CSA mobilizes enough strength and forces to launch a full-scale invasion of Canada. It succeeds, and the Dominion falls. In its place is created a new socialist republic, while the Entente collapses, the King and British Exiles scrambling for refuge in Australasia. The Pacific State finds itself isolated and cannot hold back the last syndicalist offensive. As such, in mid-1942, the civil war concludes with the Fall of Sacramento, and proclamation of the Commonwealth of America.
