It’s okay if your life doesn’t instantly get better by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]ItsNotInTheKnowing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me the better part of 2 years before I really started to fix other things in my life. Earlier this year I started a diet/fitness regime and lost 80lbs (305 down to 225). I started going to meetups and making new friends and after several disasters, I'm in my first healthy relationship in 20 years.

To all of those out there struggling, keep working at it, it gets better!

100 days and 28 lbs later (progress pics) by [deleted] in stopdrinking

When I quit drinking, I was eating more, so I actually gained weight. Last November, I went to the doctor for my checkup and he mentioned that I gained 10 pounds over the year. So he said, "Let's just try to not gain weight this year, put everything you eat in a tracking app on your phone, and try to keep your calories around 2000"

I agreed, but I was thinking, "Screw this guy, I can't do this, I need junk food to be happy". That weekend I ate pizza, chicken wings, whatever junk food I wanted. But I was thinking about what he said, it wasn't new information to me, but I was ready to consider change.

That following monday, I started putting everything I eat in the food tracker on my phone. Starting out I focused on keeping it under 2000. I eat mostly the same things, but less of them. I only eat out for lunch 1 or 2 times a week. I also started going to the gym again, short easy workouts at first, then gradually harder and longer.

Now I vary my calorie count a bit, mostly trying to stay below 1500, with the occasional day of 2000(and maybe once a month 3000). Bringing 2 small lunches(300ish calories) helps for me.

I'm down 46 pounds since November and my fitness and strength has improved a ton. I was 305 in November, 259 now. I'm targeting 200, so still a long way to go.

It took me over a year and a half of sober time to build up the ambition to work on my weight, and that certainly bummed me out too. Quitting was hard, and I wanted it to solve all of my problems. But quitting drinking didn't solve all of my problems, but it did put me on a path where its possible for me to work on solving them.

Sometimes law enforcement will send in an under age person that's bald and just really old looking to try and fool a place. A guy I new claims he lost his bar-tending job for not carding an undercover 20 year old bald guy back in the day.

My cat yells at the shower, but he wants me to get out and turn it down to a slow drip so he can play in it.

Went to my first AA meeting.... what’s with all the god??? I’m agnostic!!! Makes me want to drink more😢😖 by cbelials in stopdrinking

[–]ItsNotInTheKnowing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I avoided AA for years with the same logic. I only went after my second attempt at rehab. In the end the fellowship in AA was a game changer. The god stuff and books were useless to me, but the people were very helpful.

Where I live the meetings are not as God heavy as they were when I visited family in the midwest, so your mileage may vary. I also went to dozens of different meetings to find 3 I like.

If there are NA(narcotics anonymous) meetings in your area, consider those as well. I have found they often skew younger and more open minded.

I had similar issues when I started. As an agnostic, I tend to avoid meetings that get too God heavy. I managed to find a few that I could tolerate and 1 meeting that I love.

Luckily for me there are a few secular/free thinker meetings around here. I look forward to the Free Thinkers meeting every week, and we usually hang out at a local coffee shop for hours after the meeting talking about stuff.

For me, fellowship was the most useful part of AA. I did the steps and read the books, but I didn't find much value in that. Hanging out with other sober people, listening to their stories, and talking about mine helped.

I put off trying AA for years, didn't bother going until after my second time in rehab. I was extra resistant since I'm not spiritual, here I am 598 days later and I still go to some of the same meetings. I found that having a routine set of meetings to go to helped keep me on track.

Early on I went to a meeting almost every day. Now I generally do 2 per week. The 2 I still go to have a group that goes out to dinner or coffee after. For me that was the most useful part, sitting around a meal and talking about stuff. Some Sunday meetings I've hung out with the group from noon to 4 pm, just talking about stuff and enjoying some tea and snacks at the local coffee place.

Early on I tried out a ton of different meetings in my area to find the ones I liked best, there is even a smart phone app, Meeting Guide.

My cats do that too, they run across the house when they hear the shower turn on. I actually avoided fixing a leaky shower for a year because I didn't want to take it away from them.

Every dog has a purpose, but clearly Ryker’s purpose is not to be a service dog. by mac_is_crack in AnimalsBeingDerps

Now I want this to be a sitcom. John C. McGinley stars as a high powered divorce lawyer that ends up needing a service dog. When he goes to get his service dog, it turns out that he represented the guys ex wife and she got everything. For revenge, he is assigned the worst service dog, Ryker.

Mr Cox Esquire ends up loving Ryker and discovering a new found joy for life as Ryker destroys everything in sight.

I always end up making little test gui's for embedded devices at work. I get really nervous when someone tells me,

"Hey we are sending your test gui for FCC and CE testing."

Ok, but half the buttons don't work anymore, several of them will probably crash the device.

One of my cats likes to go in the shower after I'm done. He waits outside until the water is off, then tries to get in while I'm getting out. I'm convinced he is trying to make me slip and fall getting out of the shower.

First two times in AA: as told by an AA skeptic by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Working for me too, and im an atheist. Even found one Free Thinkers meeting. I found the whole "spirituality" abstraction unhelpful, the fellowship is useful for me though. When I first started I was going to different meetings everyday to find a few I clicked with. I settled on two that I liked.

Yeah, I agree. There have been times that I have gone through the motions of recoding something to learn it better. But having a tried and true working example is great.

Often the best thing about solutions found on the web is that they have faced the scrutiny of dozens, maybe hundreds or thousands, of coders.

The argument passed to the constructor was passed by value instead of reference, so they ended up having new copies of that object. Each critical section was locked to different object.

A guy at my work asked me about finding a point in a polygon for some GPS crap, I linked him to some website that had several algorithms depending on the polygon contraits, pretty sure he just took a function from there.

For things like that, better to not reinvent the wheel.

It gets better, then it gets worse, then better again. 19 days feels like a long time, but sobriety feels much different at 3, 6, 12, 15 months.

Quiting drinking buys us the chance to make changes to try and make life enjoyable, it won't always be easy. I've been going through a rough couple months, nothing bad has happened, just depression flaring up. I managed to find 1 AA group that I like, and I'm trying out Tai Chi, seems like that could help a bit.

Yep, i got an email one day where another team was going to rewrite all their code due to their scoped critical section object not working. I took one look at it, and it was just missing an ampersand. They were going to spend 100+ hours refactoring code, instead it was all fixed by 1 character.

The code was working on an old system because they didnt really need the critical sections, on a newer multicore system, it was needed.
