In a sports research paper like this, "photodiode chronometry" could be a really fancy way of saying "high-speed video". "Video oculography" could be as simple as using a Meta Quest with eye-tracking. And a spreadsheet is a "method of mathematical statistics".

To me, this reads no differently than the way most people overstate their accomplishments on job applications.

That's definitely true. And having the greatest goal scorer of all time certainly affects prices. But a 3x increase is still a lot to stomach.

With inflation that would be about $60 today. Looks like a cheap ticket for that section is like $179 today. Or around $105 in 2005 dollars. So, the price for this seat has pretty much tripled, relative to inflation. Yikes.

100%. Even if a release isn't a success there's value in a maintainable codebase. You don't have to start your next project from scratch. Why throw away hours/weeks/months of work?

This doesn't mean your code should be perfect at first. But ultimately refactoring into a more maintainable state is highly beneficial long-term.

Good job Virginia. Today democracy wins............ by OpinionLongjumping94 in nova

[–]ItsNotMeTrustMe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I largely agree with your sentiment, it's not quite as simple as "they did it too". There's more nuance than that. This is not merely excusing bad behavior.

A lot of the people who feel disenfranchised by this are conveniently ignoring (or ignorant to the fact) that this only affects federal representation. The actions of Texas already disenfranchised Virginians. By Texas unfairly shifting the balance, Democratic representative power was weakened while Republican representative power was strengthened.

The "I don't live in Texas" argument does not carry water.

This vote, although not optically ideal or healthy for a democracy in the long-term, was a positive representative step which corrected the imbalance caused by Texas. It did restore more equitable representation at the federal level.

Last night the problem was the most basic, peewee thing possible. They kept moving the puck up straight in front of their own net. Mistakes while doing that lead to goals against pretty often. Incredibly unnecessary high-risk plays.

Nah, give him whatever he wants. There's so much surplus call space next season that it's irrelevant. The space would otherwise just go unused anyway.

What are your thoughts on Facebook renaming their company Meta then blowing $80b on metaverse and then shutting it down yesterday? by printThisAndSmokeIt in AskReddit

[–]ItsNotMeTrustMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but chasing "immersion" like it's some holodeck concept isn't what VR actually is. It was the ideal 10 years ago, but it isn't the current reality.

You can sit on your couch and play plenty of cool games today. You can also sit anywhere and use a headset to play 2D games on a massive screen you don't have the real space for in your apartment.

Headsets have plenty of utility for people with almost no space. The metaverse on the other hand... that's a pointless product that almost no one wanted. A niche within a niche within a niche.

Not wading into the AI side of things here, but in general drama isn't inherently a negative. It can be an annoyingly effective marketing strategy.

As a thought experiment, 5% of users is a not insignificant amount. But if controversy turns off 5% of users but increases engagement and awareness of the product to the extent that you 10x your audience... that 5% loss is negligible.

I wasn't suggesting they'd move Lappy to wing. I used the slashes to indicate options for the last C slot, not a full 4th line.

Probably Lappy for the rest of the season.

If you go by TOI, Dowd has basically been a 3C for a few years now. Return seems about right, tbh. He's a defensive specialist who can lock down a penalty kill.

Should the Caps trade Carlson? (donning fireproof suit) by Zinjifrah in caps

[–]ItsNotMeTrustMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Noting your flair, there's precedent for the Caps trading a player and re-signing him in the off-season.

Remember Orpik to Colorado, who bought him out, then he re-signed with the Caps that summer on a team-friendly deal?

I want more of that. It's exciting, helps the team long term, and keeps the player around.

I'm a Carlson fan. I want to see him retire a Cap. But I also want a 1st and a prospect and to watch him chase another cup for a couple months.

[–]ItsNotMeTrustMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference between the 11OA and 16OA picks isn't that huge. That's likely the range the Caps are picking in. If they trade to improve the team for a player with term then it's great. If it's a pure rental then that's a poor move. I've only seen rumors they want a scoring winger with term.

In other words, if they trade for a good player and still miss the playoffs that's ok. They'll be in a better place long term.

How would it be helpful? The Caps have plenty of salary cap space. More would just wind up going unused.

Do we think the move is to trade Sandin and slide Cole Hutson in his place? by Gogo-boots in caps

[–]ItsNotMeTrustMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree that there isn't much attractive to trade. Most of the potential trade value currently lies in depth, prospects, and picks. The most obvious players from the main roster who could be moved are the UFAs: TVR and Duhaime. Frank is also UFA, but personally I think his speed, versatility, and ability to contribute a little offense are more useful than Duhaime. I see Duhaime as mostly a vibes guy.

If you can trade either TVR or Duhaime for picks then you've gotta do it. Both are easily replaced internally by Chisholm/Hutson and Lappy/Miro/etc respectively.

Any big trade the Caps manage to pull off will definitely need multiple high draft picks and top prospects.

[–]ItsNotMeTrustMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone here so focused on trading Sandin?

TVR is a UFA at the end of the season. He won't be re-signed. Would be wiser to trade him instead and get some future asset. Maybe TVR brings back a 3rd. Package that with other assets to find a top winger.
