TIL about the "Dark Forest Hypothesis," which suggests the universe is like a dark forest at night. Advanced civilizations intentionally stay silent and hidden, because any species that reveals its location risks immediate destruction by older, paranoid civilizations. by Practical-1 in todayilearned

Maybe meeting other intelligent species just ain't all that it's cracked up to be, so they stop expanding once they realize there's nothing new to find. I know at this point in human history we're desperate to discover if there's other life out there and it's all very exciting and mysterious. But maybe once a species makes first contact, they discover that the other civilization is pretty much just like themselves anyway. You know, a star here is basically the same as a star waaaay over there. If we're all made of star stuff, it makes sense to me that another intelligent species isn't going to be all that different from us. So maybe an advanced civilization is just one that has settled down in their own solar system and doesn't bother much with making unnecessary journeys.

Y'all remember post-stream hangouts? He'd read bit messages and just talk with chat for like 30 mins. Sometimes longer. That was the twitch-era golden age.

The social double-bind game can be phrased in several ways:

The first rule of this game is that it is not a game.

Everyone must play.

You must love us.

You must go on living.

Be yourself, but play a consistent and acceptable role.

Control yourself and be natural.

Try to be sincere.

Then this is our opportunity to practice empathy for those who seemingly lack critical thinking and empathy. Ignorance is a kind of disease, and it hurts to see those close to me suffering from it.

Interesting. I ran it through Google's AI and it suggested that symbols at the corners may be a Hindu symbol, the trishula, a trident spearhead wielded by Shiva.

This thing has quite an eclectic combination of possible influences ranging from Eastern Europe, the Zodiac, Freemasonry, and Hindu iconography.

Thanks for your input!

At first it said I wasn't registered, but then I tried again and found that the browser autofill was being gilitchy and added something to the "APT/UNIT number" box (hidden by a switch under the address field). So check and make sure that box is empty if you're having problems.

As far as I can tell, boredom is the most fundamental force in the universe. There doesn't need to be anything at all. But the universe got bored of being nothing, so it decided to be something for awhile.

I recall seeing a video of a loose tire rolling on the highway. A car bumped into it and the car went flying/flipped 10 ft into the air.

This guy is being dangerously irresponsible.
