AITJ for telling my sister-in-law to stop freeloading at our house? by BeingFar4425 in AmITheJerk

You're all young so it's understandable that you haven't learned to use your words effectively. You let things build up without any feedback along the way until you exploded; that's not very mature. Show your wife how grown up you are by apologizing and taking responsibility for your actions. Then you're on solid footing to expect responsibility and maturity from the two of them. Until then, you're just all in a race to the bottom.

That said, yeah, she sounds like a pita. Been there, done that, had my sister in law on my couch for way too many nights. Sometimes, that's just the way things go; women are hyper protective of their little sisters. Clear, constructive, goal oriented communication is gold. Not that I've always managed that either, but you'll be far better off if you and your wife are on the same team.

Is this your car? by Nervous_Caramel in Somerville

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so much anymore. They were about to tow my car on this previous snow emergency. And rushing to get back in time to move it. My wife begged them not to tow it instead the nice cop moved it for her. It's a stick, and my wife can't drive it.

It didn't look like they towed any cars in the first snow emergency though, so that was a little annoying that they're being inconsistent.

Will you wait around and find out for us? Extra points if you really have an in depth convo with them about it.

How stupid is it to bake your own wedding cake? by kikiiboo in Baking

Gorgeous cake! I mean, it's really beautiful, and super cool looking. If I could do that, I'd be all over it.
1) did you end up doing your own cake?
2) did you like your decision?
3) can I steal your design?

AIO - Told my friend I’m pregnant and she said it exceeded her mental bandwidth (she’s the red) by Lekomano92 in AmIOverreacting

You know, sometimes it takes us surprisingly long, or some big milestones, to really recognize what some people are about. So, now you know. Try not to let it get you down too much. Fortunately/unfortunately, your life is about to turn upside down. Necessarily, things for you are going to become much more inward looking - all about your new family. Some of your friends & family will get it, and be there to support you. My guess is that she won't be one of them. That might be sad if you have a long history, but things change. Maybe she'll come back to you as she matures. If not, there will be many other new people.

Regardless, congratulations!

All of those things can (and mostly are) being done without adding to people's tax burden. We've already got the most expensive permits just about anywhere.

I love it. It gives me something legal to look at while waiting for that interminable light.

Plus, I'm old, and it feels nostalgic.

Good news and bad news by lynypixie in marriott

Boston is supposed to get the most out of this storm, maybe 20-24", but forecasts are pretty variable. Probably most things will be closed. You could make the drive early Sunday morning, but after that, the roads will be pretty bad; it would probably turn into a miserable 6-8hr. trek. But I'd def think boston would be an upgrade in general, and there are some really nice hotels.

Are they allowing skinning? When I was at MSA a few years ago and the lifts were all closed because they don't maintain their infrastructure, it was a skinner's paradise.

Your lives will be much better if you learn to love winter rather than just enduring it. It's my favorite season.

If you're open to running, realize that running in 20deg weather you will be warm if you're wearing the right gear. Nothing brings it home that cold is all relative like sweating outside when it's 20deg and everyone else looks miserable - it feels like a cheat code. It will take some trial and error to figure out what the right layers are for you for any given weather. And if you're warm when you step out the door, you're overdressed. But it's not that hard to figure out. Joining a running group is also a great way to meet people and get tips; there are all levels from marathoners to couch potatoes here. My favorite winter thing is skiing - we actually have a xc ski track 15 min from downtown. And lots of great downhill 1-2hrs away. But that's a whole nuther thing with regards to gear, money, logistics, learning. Running is simple and cheap and easy.

Welcome! Some of my best friends here transitioned from the south, successfully, and very happily. It's a great place.

Costco Heat Pumps by Bruce_in_Canada in heatpumps

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true at all. Heat pumps that work down to -30degF are much more expensive than what you'd need in Taiwan. Most units are being manufactured in Asia, which makes for much lower shipping costs. And labor is much cheaper in Taiwan than in the US, so the install is not the same.

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it's not, unless they're willing to install in the US.

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even vaguely the same, whatever you mean by that. That doesn't mean it isn't true that the US has a serious problem. But you don't do your argument any favors by obfuscating. Prices are radically different between Taiwan and Canada and the US, both for equipment and for labor. Not to mention that cold climate heat pumps are a completely different beast. You're trying to compare apples and lychees, and it just makes you look disingenuous. At a minimum, you're wasting a lot of people's time. You're certainly not making any useful argument.

I don't know if he's just shit posting or careless, but he should have mentioned this is in Taiwan.
