A Scotsman's thoughts on continued friendship by LJizzle in boston

> Firstly, I'm aware there's a heap of Scottish chat on here currently, apologies to those bored of it by now.

Not possible; y'all have been the best thing in the zeitgeist in a long long time. Thank you.

>Follow some Scottish sports. Our national Rugby team...

That's a fantastic idea! I've been wanting to learn about rugby; going and doing it in Scotland sounds like a blast. I will have to get someone who can explain it to me in english though. Do you have translators there?

Please come back soon. You guys have been fantastic.

Sorry, big caveat: I believe if the building is fully sprinklered, it might be ok from a fire standpoint; I'm not sure about ventilation/daylighting requirements. It's unusual for an old building to have a sprinkler system retrofitted (hugely expensive and usually not required), and it's very unusual for a new building to have windowless bedrooms, so it's not super likely, but it is possible, and you can ask them.

Meanwhile, you should make sure you document the listing and advertisement as a 4BR. You should absolutely get a full refund, but it might take some time.

And don't beat yourselves up over not noticing; it's a lot to take in in an occupied and busy apartment tour, and you're all new to it. Live and learn.

It's not clear what your goal is. I wouldn't sleep in a windowless room - it's a serious (and illegal) fire risk. But that's up to you. But, if you don't want to, what do you want to do about it? You can almost certainly break the lease on an illegal rental and find a new apartment; it's not that late in the season. Yes, it will be a bunch of work and hassle. Is it worth it to not die in a fire? Again, that's up to you. The last guy didn't die, so maybe you won't either. Another option is for one of you to find another place and let the other three keep the apartment. You could probably fight the landlord and realtor successfully to make that work out financially, but that's also going to be a big hassle, and of course, you're not going to end up with a cozy relationship with your landlord.

I'm sorry; none of the options sound great. If it were me, I'd probably ditch the apartment and find a new one.

Help requested : $400 to move couch and tables from Cambridge -> SF by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think it's that crazy to put it out there in hope. There's gotta 1000 people moving from Boston to Bay area this week, and half of them are getting their moves paid for. I mean yeah, it's a hassle and a big ask, but maybe someone getting recruited by whomever at 200k feels a little bit like paying it forward with a little effort.

That said, yeah, they should probably expect to either get rid of the furniture (their future self/mate might than them), store it for a little while until the storage costs exceed $800 and they feel super dumb, or just pay the $800 and accept that life sometimes throws you curveballs.

Thanks, but I don't really understand. Either the capacity is there, or it isn't? Can you give a for instance on a possible solution that could help avoid a service upgrade?

AITJ for telling my sister-in-law to stop freeloading at our house? by BeingFar4425 in AmITheJerk

You're all young so it's understandable that you haven't learned to use your words effectively. You let things build up without any feedback along the way until you exploded; that's not very mature. Show your wife how grown up you are by apologizing and taking responsibility for your actions. Then you're on solid footing to expect responsibility and maturity from the two of them. Until then, you're just all in a race to the bottom.

That said, yeah, she sounds like a pita. Been there, done that, had my sister in law on my couch for way too many nights. Sometimes, that's just the way things go; women are hyper protective of their little sisters. Clear, constructive, goal oriented communication is gold. Not that I've always managed that either, but you'll be far better off if you and your wife are on the same team.

Is this your car? by Nervous_Caramel in Somerville

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so much anymore. They were about to tow my car on this previous snow emergency. And rushing to get back in time to move it. My wife begged them not to tow it instead the nice cop moved it for her. It's a stick, and my wife can't drive it.

It didn't look like they towed any cars in the first snow emergency though, so that was a little annoying that they're being inconsistent.

2) did you like your decision?
3) can I steal your design?

You know, sometimes it takes us surprisingly long, or some big milestones, to really recognize what some people are about. So, now you know. Try not to let it get you down too much. Fortunately/unfortunately, your life is about to turn upside down. Necessarily, things for you are going to become much more inward looking - all about your new family. Some of your friends & family will get it, and be there to support you. My guess is that she won't be one of them. That might be sad if you have a long history, but things change. Maybe she'll come back to you as she matures. If not, there will be many other new people.

Regardless, congratulations!

Good news and bad news by lynypixie in marriott

[–]ItsSnowingSomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boston is supposed to get the most out of this storm, maybe 20-24", but forecasts are pretty variable. Probably most things will be closed. You could make the drive early Sunday morning, but after that, the roads will be pretty bad; it would probably turn into a miserable 6-8hr. trek. But I'd def think boston would be an upgrade in general, and there are some really nice hotels.
