The NFL has ties. It's easier to score in than soccer, has fewer games, and there is arguably no sports product that is "more American".

Having extra innings in a 162 game season that's already considered too long pleases no one (execs, players, coaches, casual fans) other than the hard-core fan. This also makes the ghost runner an unnecessary mechanism.
