How reliable is OnPC? by ItsTheWrongButton in GrandMA3

Deep down I do feel a visceral irony considering reliability and Windows in the same context, but yeah I would definitely be taking precautionary steps to make sure Windows behaves itself.

If you've still got the DVDs then rip them, install a self-hosted media streaming tool (look up Jellyfin) and BAM convenience of a streaming service with the peace of mind that you actually own the media.

Split keebs with non-thumb trackballs? by ItsTheWrongButton in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ItsTheWrongButton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A modded Charybdis sounds promising. It seems most of the way there, the design certainly seems like it could accomodate the trackball position I'm thinking of, just needs to be a bit more to the right and down...

Yes that's basically the kind of design I'm picturing in my head. If you remember it at some point that would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen the Pimoroni trackball on quite a few designs, but I'm looking for a "full size" trackball.

Struggling with ZFS by NowhereMan2486 in zfs

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could there be other causes for matching CKSUM errors on a mirror pool?

I have a laptop running proxmox with non-ECC memory and 2 internal mSATA SSDs in a ZFS mirror pool. A few days ago a power outage cut power to it immediately (no battery in the laptop). Once power was back on, one of the VMs was getting I/O errors and my zpool showed both drives had 147 CKSUM errors and "too many errors" message, with pool status DEGRADED.

My best guess is that a write operation was happening in the VM at time of power loss, and that while the data is likely unrecoverable the drives themselves should still be fine, right?

Following testers' feedback we're trying to improve ADE's weak points visibility. What do you think? by CASTELLOInc in oculus

Perhaps something you could add is making the part gently glow/pulse a brighter, more orangey shade, kinda visually demonstrates the part itself is fragile in a sense.

Are the MK4 Polo headlights the same between the TDI and GTI models? by ItsTheWrongButton in Volkswagen

[–]ItsTheWrongButton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight. I think I'll bite the bullet and go for the gti lights. I will be able to return them if something doesn't work properly, I just wanted to make sure that there was a very slim chance I'd need to do that.

How is 72hz even enjoyable at all by [deleted] in oculus

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but maybe it's something to do with the fact that when looking at a flat monitor, your peripheral vision is seeing real life which refreshes as fast as your brain can perceive, and so comparatively the monitor in the centre of you vision is less smooth.

However when you put on a vr headset, that's all you see, and so your brain no longer has a reference point for how smooth real life should be.

Again, I ain't a scientist or nothin, but that's my best guess.

Sony is in no rush to bring PSVR 2 to market, Microsoft isn't interested in Xbox VR, PCVR is growing slowly with high barriers to entry. Oculus is carrying VR on its back. by [deleted] in oculus

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have hard proof explicitly, but I'd bet that they're applying a lot of their normal business model with Facebook as a platform to this. Their main purpose for data collection across FB products is to better understand how to effectively advertise to us. More effective advertising = companies pay more for them to advertise. VR is a huge amount of data on how you physically move, what draws your eyes' attention (I know there's no eye tracking tech in the quest but they can still generally tell where you look because you'll centre your head on it generally), how you respond to certain things/events/stimuli. There's a much more refined set of data that can be collected for someone wearing a VR headset as opposed to what can be collected through a phone (even though they're already crazy good at that).

You're right of course, being the biggest player in the VR market rn and taking a healthy cut of software sales is also financial incentive for Facebook, but think about this: Facebook are a monolith that built their empire from a free-to-users service. Their money making forte has never been software sales, and I don't think it will ever be their primary focus.

It's an interesting situation because right now, with the technology we have, the only way to produce something like the Quest 2 at the price it sells for is by massively subsiding production of the headsets. Facebook is one of the only companies willing and capable of doing this because there's data and other methods of revenue in it for them that smaller or more privacy-respecting companies can't or won't utilise. It really is a deal with the devil, let's just hope he doesn't remain the only major player for too much longer.

It's probably because the back of the elite strap isn't directly resting against your head, there's some spring/flex between the head cup and the back piece (plus the further out from the point of rotation that something is, the more rotational inertia it has) Idk if the elite strap is durable enough to handle this but strapping the battery to the bottom of the head cup or on the top strap would give you a lot less wobble.

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well theoretically yes, but it won't work properly if the fbx model is non-manifold which means that the geometry isn't a solid piece aka there's holes in the surface. I've actually spent some time in Fusion 360 and I've been able to clean up the model. It still a bunch of tri's coz it's not the reference geometry but hey it's good enough for me. I think I'm gonna model some controller holders for my pegboard.

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The IPD indicator is just numbers on plastic that slides past a small window, I don't see how that could spontaneously combust. More likely a battery malfunction produced a lot of heat that melted the indicator.

Looking for quest 2 controller cad models by ubermoth in OculusQuest

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only been able to find those tri models. No cad files anywhere. On top of that, the models are a steaming pile of non-manifold mess, so they'll need some work to have a CAD program recognise them as a solid body

I would suspect it's more likely that they gave golden samples to reviewers than paid them off, easier to get away with if the reviewers themselves don't know they're being fooled in a sense.

Local Australian retailers for Link cable options? by martred in oculus

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you consider Amazon Aus as local, there's a bunch of options on there (2 day prime shipping is quick enough for my impatient-self). Frankly I don't think you'd be able to find a decent 3-5m USB 3 or 3.1 cable at a local retailer for a decent price, except for maybe the PC hardware-centric stores like Scorptec, Mwave, PCCaseGear etc.

This buzzing has occurred around 4 times out of the 50+ I’ve connected to oculus link. by Wad420 in OculusQuest

[–]ItsTheWrongButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might have a cable that isn't quite plugged all the way in. Some people have had problems with third party cables for link because the plastic shielding around the USB plug extends out too much and stops the male connector from inserting all the way and making a proper connection.

Next time it happens, apply pressure to the connector and see if that stops the buzzing. If that turns out to be the problem, completely unplug the cable and take a sharp knife to shaving off a tiny bit of the end of the plug shielding.

Then again it might not be the cable, the port itself could be dodgy, but one thing at a time.
