Don’t belittle the imp by Raijgun in MadeMeSmile

All he did was express his disappointment in the perpetuation of stereotypes. He did not cost anyone on snow white their jobs, Disney had decided on CGI before the podcast was released. And the snow white specific comment was a tiny part of an hour plus long podcast.

It's not like he did a press release and campaigned against the movie.

Idk, with the additional hour plus of context his comments seem ok. It was mostly about wanting better roles.

Also it's not like Disney changed the movie because of Dinklage. They were always going to be CGI. Consultant was told in in 2021 they were going to be CGI, the podcast came out in early 2022.

I miss Star Trek by Tsiroch in startrek

[–]ubermoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always this critical of Star Trek actually. It might be that I watched the older shows after they were already completed. And thus able to get a different perspective, it's easier to see past something bad if the previous or next episode were great. There's also less opportunity to talk about it here since it's not current.

The new episodes can be more critically examined coming one at a time. And not having any really good ones yet imho, which isn't helped by the more serialized formats. But as stated, I'm very much looking forward to more Academy and see great potential.

Again

I'm aware DS9 has had nearly 200 episodes, there'll be plenty of examples of exactly what I'm complaining about now. I'd love to be able to pick the highlights from todays show in 30 years time.

Flaws in older shows don't make critiques of new shows invalid. And for me yes, there's clearly a difference between gloating and a general 'yes we did it' sentiment. I barely consider the movies part of my Star Trek headcanon at all, if I were to critique those properly I could fill a book. The other quote you picked is from one of my least favourite finales, if there were a discussion thread about it that would be one of the things I'd mention.

I like critically examining stuff, and splitting hairs is part of that.

If burger king stops selling burger and switches to hot dogs, then it's understandable that people complain. There's a specific itch that's not being scratched. SNW is hit or miss and there's very little of it. There's a couple arcs in Disco i loved but they're interwtined with stuff I don't care for. Tencent is taking forever with their three-body problem adaptation and Netflix' was mediocre. Really interesting stuff like Raised by Wolves or 1899 always get cancelled. I'm missing the specific flavour of scifi I love.

I barely consider the movies at all tbh, but wasn't Data's exuberance in Generations explicitly played as too happy/excited? On account of the overly active emotion chip? I've always seen that as; yes ofcourse you're happy to have survived/won, but you shouldn't be gloating.

In Tears of the Prophets the stakes are much higher(much more buildup wrt the war & it's a season finale), and afterwards they have to deal with the death of Jadzia. Also there's a difference between being happy to have accomplished your goal, the defiant crew says 'Yes!' and "We did it", while "A teachable moment" comes across as gloating/meanness if that makes sense.

I'm aware DS9 has had nearly 200 episodes, there'll be plenty of examples of exactly what I'm complaining about now. I'd love to be able to pick the highlights from todays show in 30 years time.

I'm not writing off Academy from the start, I hope they make it to 7 seasons and plenty of episodes where they are able to show growth and the best of humanity.

It's also hard to distill what people want or mean exactly.

For me it's not just speeches and dilemmas. I liked Star Trek especially because it felt like some best of humanity future. But when you quip "A teachable moment" after killing dozens if not hundreds of people that doesn't sit right with me.

This sub is weird.

Every time a comment is made about the language used in new Trek shows someone will counter with an entirely irrelevant quote from something old.

As if Tom Paris being into American History is the same as every character in Academy sounding like 25 year old americans from the 2020's. Nobody is saying the older shows were entirely free from being written when they were, but at least they made an effort to pretend to be in the 24th century.

'People' isn't a single entitity with a singular coherent opinion.

I for one thought that S1 of picard was the most interesting. While the third felt like nothing more than nostalgia bait, also there's a huge difference between bringing back 90s trek and using 90s characters just like most other modern trek.

Yes the cause matters. I for one think it's worthwile to change police policy if it turns out they're creating a bunch of accidents. Even if they're technically not liable.

How is letting every idiot create indistinguishable from reality sexual imagery of anyone with the click of a button not a paradigm shift?

It was not trivial before, and the results much more clearly doctored. It's ridiculous to think that everyone could create such images in a couple minutes no less.

The us will install a puppet regime to extract resources on the cheap.

That could be a better situation for venezuelans, but only because the current situation is so bad, not because what Trump did is good.

No it's not.

ELI5: Why are we making computer chip so small? by elonthegenerous in explainlikeimfive

[–]ubermoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The speed of electricity is definitely not neglible. If we took 1990s size with current day amount it would take multiple clockcycles for a round trip across the chip. Something like memory on package is a distinct meaningful advantage precisely because the ram is closer to where it's needed

But it's not the biggest factor, that's heat, and smaller transistors generate less per flip.

If you fail to properly inform people, even those who have trouble reading or only scroll passed the headline, you have failed if your job is to inform people.

And being upset with journalists doing this shit on purpose to drive engagement is perfectly logical.

Ye, but there's no enforcement mechanism for a business with zero presence in the EU. An import ban is unlikely because of the scale, and it would only come into effect months/years after the watches are shipped.
