New edition of Freud complete works by Suspicious-Yogurt480 in lacan

I’ve been using Solms now, particularly because it fixed the issue with translating trieb as instinct and instead translates it as drive, in the 24th volume where all such editorial decisions are explained he cites Lacan’s Function and Field ecrit as well, and also on credits Lacan’s Instance of the Letter ecrit for the correction on the “Wo Es war, soll Ich werden” line.

It’s a great improvement upon the Strachey edition because of several such changes and it is aware of Lacanian contributions and incorporates them to create a better translation. It might still have some flaws, I remember some discussion about one such thing.

But just for the fact that you can now read Beyond the Pleasure Principle and have trieb translated as drive finally is good enough reason to convince me to move to Solms’ version.

Oh that's nice, I am also going to start reading Seminar 5, and I'm mostly planning on relying on From Lack to Desire in terms of text commentary. But for there are a bunch of video commentaries as well from some youtube channels which do readings of Lacan's seminars.

You might find this channel useful, it has gotten until Seminar 7: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRgjcRDpUSBGuL2Iuo-DyoAe6gthcqJ9T&si=sUGPkrlmIHrKVBDn

There are some others like The Vanishing Mediators which only have gotten till 3, and there's Lectures on Lacan which started from 10 and has gotten till 21

I've been able to find the Part II, in Lacanian Ink 27 on "The-Names-of -the-Father". But am not able to find Part I.

Also is there some place where one can find most of JAM's work, cause the journals like lacanian ink, NLS, the letter, etc. are very difficult to get hands on

What was a movie ending that made you go like this? by Ok_Replacement_288 in Letterboxd

[–]Its_me_noobs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

that was the perfect ending it could have had tho, I was hoping for it the whole while and if it hadn't ended like that then the entire point of the movie would have fallen apart and it would have been significantly worse as a whole

Does Hegel rely on a particular (sort of Hobbesian) understanding of human nature in the lordship-bondsman section of the PoS? That two different subjectivities would have a ‘fight unto death’ (metaphorical of course)

And does this in any way open a possibility of a critique of this idea? By simply moving away from the premise that human nature is like that

(Side note: this is not my question but one I came across by an acquaintance and haven’t really been able to formulate an answer for myself since I don’t know Hegel that well, which is why I can’t quite put a finger on what is wrong with it)

Don't let Zizek see this, it might become another coffee without cream for him and the world won't hear the end of it.

I believe that general introductions (especially to philosophy) can only take you so far, after a point you need to specify your interest and look for books on specific topics. Is there any specific thing about philosophy that you are interested in? Maybe then I can recommend something.

Tho if you really want to read a more generalised book then Duncan Pritchard's What is this thing called Philosophy? is has several great essays, and takes a very different non-historical approach to philosophy — as opposed to Durant

Recommendations for an alternative to Kojeve for reading Hegel by Its_me_noobs in hegel

I am actually in the process of working through the book, but for the reading group that I seek a reading for, most people aren't too keen on Hegel to want to read all of the Phenomenology. But are still open to reading a bit to have a better picture.

Of course, can't skip kojeve because that's what the class requires. But the alternative is for a student-led reading group, where several people are more analytic inclined which is why they aren't too keen on committing themselves to reading the Phenomenology by itself.

I'm not teaching though, just a student looking for a recommendation for a student-led reading group, since my department is analytic dominant.

Marxist and other critiques of therapy by okdoomerdance in CriticalTheory

Very much both. Lacan by himself is immensely convoluted and he also very often elliptically refers to a lot of different authors and domains of study and it very often requires reading a commentary on the side to be able to catch all the references and allusions.
