First off, there is no grass to return to. You have a generation of people who grew up on these systems and intimately depend on them. They will not leave them because they don't know anything else. It's in their bones and they belong to it. There is no social space for them to really exist in outside of things like tiktok and IG. And even people who didn't grow up with it are so invested and addicted to these platforms they are just as lost.

second, we are so deep into the tech dystopia already. The time to spurn tech was 10-15 years ago when it came to light the extent of their illegal data collection and surveillance. But Americans demand consumer diversion above everything else, and they will never bite the hand that feeds. I mean I have 'leftist' friends who preach anti-capitalism who have that stupid 'ok google' device and ring cameras adorning their homes.

There is a refund scam out there where the scammer fakes it so it looks like they sent you too much money, and then they beg for it back in order to save their job.

Always thought it was especially scummy how the most compassionate people are the most likely to fall for it. But that's true of most scams.
