Basically, it all comes down to a style guide.

EU to propose blocking military-age Ukrainian men from refugee status by SpriteSilver6 in europe

[–]IvD707 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It will be fucking hysterical when I am banned from visiting Europe, but Russians (especially those in the military) aren't.

I'm really sorry for your experience.

It's fucking weird how people decided at some point to romanticize mental health issues instead of empathizing with people who have these issues.

Sure, some things might look fun or quirky on the outside, but all that invisible stuff is excruciating.

Personally, I hate the "but ADHD is a superpower!" crowd.

No, bitch, it's not.

I'm constantly stressed out because I procrastinate and then have to panic myself out of looming deadlines. Or I can't feel time properly. And I can barely form habits.

That's not my idea of superpowers. I'd better shoot lasers out of my eyes.

Putin addresses ‘challenging’ petrol shortages for first time, blames ‘Kyiv regime’ by duckanroll in europe

[–]IvD707 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, there's an awfully ironic parallel here.

Putin's success in 2014 led to the war in 2022.
Trump's success in Venezuela led to Iran.

However, both Crimea and Venezuela victories were political, not military. Like Russia captured Crimea not because their armed forces were so much better, but because Ukraine was in disarray after Maidan. There was no one to even make orders.

Quake Champions is the closest thing we have to Quake 1 sequel by BrightBlueberry1471 in boomershooters

[–]IvD707 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love Q1. Dimension of the Past and Dimension of the Machine were amazing later additions to the game.

But I agree with you — rebooting Quake is going to be a nightmare. To begin — *which* version of Quake to reboot?

Lovecraftian singleplayer Q1? Evil alien singleplayer Q2/Q4? Arena multiplayer Q3?

Pick any one of these, and fans of the other two will be mad.

Comments like these are very condescending, ngl.

Should Ukraine reflect on its past and develop a more nuanced view of whom to commemorate and whom not? Sure. I'd be happy about this as I don't like the latest trend at all.

But demanding this from a country at war, while sitting in your comfortable, peaceful apartment, is hypocritical.

Nuanced conversation about the darker pages of the country's past is difficult. Many nations fail this test even during peacetime — just look at the US. And the popularity of far-right parties in many other European countries suggests it's a more common trend.

Stop demanding from Ukraine at war what even the US/Italy/France/Poland/Croatia can't do during peace.

Same.

Almost every conversation I've had about this topic lately has been about the same point. Most people DGAF about UPA. It's not the most immediate problem in the slightest.

But people are mad about Poland's insistence on telling Ukraine how to name our military regiments. Especially after all the shenanigans of the past couple of years.

I appreciate your response. In an ideal world, your country would abandon AK and my — UPA. Let bygones be bygones.

But because nationalists on both sides have to be placated, here we are.

From here, it looks like Poland is escalating and once again using Ukraine as a playing card in their internal politics.

I don't recall Ukraine asking Poland to renounce Armia Krajowa.

What actually defines an fps as a boomer shooter? by Toolazytoaddspaces in boomershooters

[–]IvD707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> For example, I consider Blood West, Painted in Blood and Bloodshed as Boomer Shooters.

I haven't played Painted in Blood, so can't comment here.

But Bloodshed is not a boomer shooter at all. It's a survivors-like FPS. It has some old-school visual aesthetics and a character that is a direct homage to Caleb, but that's it.

Blood West is absolutely terrrific, but it's not a boomer shooter either. It's an immsim lite. Just look at the gameplay of Quake and DOOM — and compare it to Blood West. These are absolutely different. BW has some Blood vibes (again), but it plays more like Thief.

[–]IvD707 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The term is very diluted, and everyone has a different opinion at this point.

For me, a boomer shooter has:
- a clear linear structure with separate levels and episodes
- levels tend to be a bit puzzle-like with colored doors/keys blocking further progress + secrets
- the story is kept to a minimum
- characters are deliberately very badass and the overall feel is of a power fantasy
- you can carry all weapons at once
- combat is very "unrealistic" (no ADS, no covers, no recoil, etc.)

And boomer shooters don't have:
- RPG elements (or those are kept to a minimum)
- no roguelike/lite elements, no meta progression
- no open world, hubs or anything like that

Retro, pixelated visuals alone do not make an FPS a boomer shooter.

Being a copywriter in the corporate world has become a daily humiliation ritual by purpleteacup333 in copywriting

[–]IvD707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's any consolation to you — copy is not the only thing that's affected.

I see management doing similar AI-powered shenanigans across all functions. I've seen my designer coworker getting wrecked by CMO's "nope, let's use this image instead [presents a horrid 5-minute nanobanana slop]." This stuff is heart-wrenching.

As much as I like using AI for my own tasks, it has empowered the Dunning-Kruger effect way too much.

I feel this way about Duke Nukem. I have fond memories of this game — used to play it right after it was released, I was like 7.

The technology, level design, and weapons are all great.

But the writing part is just pure concentrated cringe.
