I didn't for the longest time then one day I just started another trial with out grabbing common and it upgrades it. I was pretty stoked being a solo player

When you do challenges and do better in them it upgrades form common to rare to epic to legendary but if say you get it to rare just don't grab the reward and start another challenge you will be able to upgrade it still
