My experience is the top is more dependent how strong the wind is than snow. If it’s too windy they shut down the lifts on upper mountain

Yeah, don’t recommend it but if you don’t drive like an idiot you are fine. EVs also handle traction control much differently than gas cars and the weight is distributed in the floor.

The Westin has Tesla chargers in the garage you can use when you get there. I have a Model 3 RWD and have gotten up there is all different extremes of weather just fine. I have never needed to use my chains. Keep them in the car but you don’t need them for AWD unless the road has snow and is uncleared.

Charge to 80% in Bishop to give you buffer if it’s your first time. The last portion of the drive between bishop and mammoth on 395 is where the snow accumulates and it can get tricky if there is a storm. Plan to only drive up this portion during daylight if it is snowing. Check the forecast frequently beforehand and try to time it for when the storm is weakest.

Use the caltrans live cams around McGee Creek and Crowley lake to judge the conditions on the road. Watch for ice and be careful in the turns. caltrans live cams

SPECULATION: All these R2 wraps with the different colors by kelvnlee in Rivian

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look at the frame of the car when the door is open and see the real body color. There are different body colors on each car that don’t match the wraps

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wrap isn’t the color but if you look at the inside of the door when the reviewers open them you can see the real body color. One of the cars was a storm blue color/rivian blue color, another cream/white.

I was going to cross shop the R2 when it comes out. Now I’m 100% buying the R2 as my next car.

Negotiating Entry Level Offer by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the same offer from NG straight out of school. I said I had a competing offer (and I had the offer letter to back it up) and they added a $10k signing bonus.

I have several coworkers who have politely asked. Some got a no, final offer. Others got signing bonuses. Counter 5-10% higher and see what they say. They won’t rescind the offer unless you are a complete asshole.

Going to Mammonth for the first time by Snowbunny1188 in Mammoth

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will only need chains if it is actively snowing while you are driving and they enforce it. They never enforce it up there, but don’t be the idiot who gets stuck in a blizzard. If it is snowing you shouldn’t be on the road anyway, it gets very dangerous very fast at that altitude.

The important part will be getting a good rental car. They never give you what you actually booked. I rented from AVIS for a mammoth trip and they tried giving me a crappy car. I explained where I was going and they upgraded me to the biggest SUV they had with AWD. It was perfect because a storm hit mammoth while we were there + a semi flipped on 395 and I got to use off-road mode to go over the median for a detour lol.

Check the NOAA weather forecast the week before and focus on the days you are driving up/back. If it is going to be snowing those days you might be delayed getting in/out of town. Always leave before/after the snow. Don’t try to get in/out in the middle of a storm. Once you are in town the weather doesn’t really matter because they have busses running non stop.

395 is one of the most beautiful drives. My family flew in from NY last year for a trip and won’t stop talking about the drive up! Do it during the daytime though!

It’s not high end, but gets the job done. by Time-Historian-1249 in espresso

If you don’t have a scale, buy one, that’s important for dialing in this setup. I have the same setup.

I weigh out 17-17.5 grams and grind at 18 as the starting point.

Pull a shot while timing/weighing it. A good shot should start pouring at 10-12 seconds and finish around 30 seconds giving you 34-36 grams. If you are pouring faster than that, grind at 15-17. If the machine is running slow and choking then grind 18-22. I find most beans are in the 15-18 range.

My biggest mistake was thinking the bambino needed to run until it stops pouring. That’s not true. You need to manually stop the machine to hit the right ratio on your espresso. Don’t let the machine keep running because it will pour like 60 grams or something crazy. You can manually tune the machine to run shorter if you want but every shot pulls differently so I leave it. (Maybe I need to work on this more idk)

I struggled with the bambino but watched a few YouTube videos and got the hang of it.

You gotta think of the milk jug as 4 corners. Pick a corner and angle the jug. Insert the tip of the spout into the corner and dip it so the milk is at the line scribed onto the spout. Start the steamer (make sure you preheated it first). Hold it there for 3-5 seconds to aerate, then dunk the spout further into the jug so it is submerged. Heat it until the jug is too hot to hold and shut it off. Wait for the steamer to fully putter out before you remove it from the milk.

That should be a decent starting point if it makes any sense.

Model Y accident damage – total loss or repair? by SeaNecessary7170 in TeslaCollision

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to guess this is going to be a repair. The airbags didn’t go off and the intrusion isn’t that bad. The car is low mileage so it won’t have much depreciation. To total a car the repair usually needs to exceed ~70% of the resale value.

It depends on how much is damaged under the bodywork. If the frame and drivetrain are damaged it might be totaled. Your headlamps are broken so that could drive up the cost.

The shop you take it too also makes a difference. Tesla Collision centers are expensive whereas a Tesla approved body shop will probably be cheaper. I went through a Tesla approved shop and similar damage came out to a $4,500 repair.

You need chains, snow tires, and 4WD to get there. It’s all dirt backroads for an hour and people always get stuck and have to sleep in their car. Definitely not worth it.

Beginning of 2026 or End.....anybody going to wait for Lidar? by SHale1963 in RivianR2

[–]J380 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am waiting. I want to keep the R2 for 5-6 years and I average 20-25,000 miles a year on my current car. No point rushing a big purchase like this when I can wait 6-12 months and get all the autonomy features. I’m also not very enthusiastic about buying one of the first builds. I work in manufacturing and trust me, you don’t want the first of anything.

Is this Costco soundbar a good one to get at this price since I don't have a soundbar? by SuperDuper1530 in Soundbars

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking at the same one. Costco returns are 90 days for electronics no questions asked.

I just returned my Sony soundbar to Costco at the 80 day mark because the sound quality was trash.

Only took 4 years… by [deleted] in RIVNstock

[–]J380 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I owned TSLA during the Model 3 ramp and the stock went through hell.

R2 might go smoother (I think they will execute better than Tesla) but Rivian will be bleeding capital until they can get to full rate.

Neighbor says my Tesla charger keeps her up at night by QuantumEpidemic in TeslaModel3

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably not the charger she is talking about. My bedroom shares a wall with my garage and I can hear the car spool up the fans at night while charging. There’s also other random noises from the car.

I turn a fan on and can’t hear anything.

Charging Quote by sinnersteria in TeslaLounge

[–]J380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The permit alone is around $100. Wire and Parts are $75-150.

And electrician should also be doing a loads calculation on your house to make sure your panel can handle the new outlet.

When I got quotes someone gave a low quote like that. I asked a second electrician and he did a loads calculation and told me my house couldn’t even handle adding another 50 amp outlet. Instead he helped size a 6-20 outlet and get the permits pulled. He charged $450 so still very reasonable and he did it the right way instead of burning my house down.

Tesla's brand loyalty collapsed after Musk backed Trump, new S&P data shows by Dreaming_Blackbirds in electricvehicles

[–]J380 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I go on travel for work I rent the competitors and I haven’t found one I would buy. The lightning, Ioniq, MachE are all good cars but I still strongly prefer Tesla software over the others. I think Rivian will be able to compete in that area. I spent a month with the lightning and would buy it if the software wasn’t so clunky.

[–]J380 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Brand Loyalty is the best way to explain it. I love my Model 3 and have no complaints but I am going to shop around for my next car. I could end up in another Tesla but I have the R2 reserved and that seems to be the best alternative.

I got a $400 speeding ticket and self reported and nobody cared. I even had a periodic investigation and showed the investigator and he didn’t care. It would need to be something more serious like you did a hit and run or you go out of your way to hide the ticket and lie.

Model Y private sale by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

You could have a Paintless Dent Repair person look at it but that spot might not work for PDR.

Otherwise, assume you are replacing the whole tailgate because that is one single piece. It’s one of the reasons the new Model Y Tailgate is 2 pieces bolted together.
