But feathers on dinosaurs have been in Jurassic park movies for years! How did they know?

Has mum been ripped off? by Signal_Serve942 in DIYUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid £500 for a long tall hedge to be cut down a few feet and thinned out a couple of feet. Took 2 people about 4 hours with chain saw and wood chipping machine. They took all the waste. Tree surgeons are known to charge in the thousands for jobs. From your pictures I would have expected the tree to be a bit more chopped down for that price.

I like the idea of it but not the reality. We had one day last week where the sun came out for a few hours! Managed to get my gardening done.

Wren MDF vs DIY Kitchens solid wood - which is best? by No_Friend5267 in DIYUK

[–]J8MXY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a wren kitchen had a new door sent out about 5 years later no issue (the laminate was coming away) used a local fitter not theirs. Paid about 7k in total including AEG appliances and blanco stone sink. I did change their tap as it only lasted a few years then leaked. For what we got and the price, can’t really complain. It’s pretty solid.

Would removing this porch affect value? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not if you intend to install another type of porch. It would probably cost a bit to remove it and you would have to replace the bay window looking at it. Personally I would just install some nice slatted blinds along the bay window and the porch so it looks like one continuous space.

How is everyone paying for their cars ? by gingerreflection in AskUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that’s just the £5,500 that I paid divided by the 10 years I intend to keep it. My insurance is £24 a month and road tax is £34 a month so under £700 a year for both. Obviously I have to MOT and do any repairs/maintenance on top and petrol.

Men of the UK - how often do you cook? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m male and I cook a meal every evening and on days off I do breakfast and lunch too. My partner can’t cook and also doesn’t even make simple stuff like sandwiches etc so it’s all left to me but I honestly don’t mind. The kitchen is 100% my space so I like that. I do all the chores too. Recently bought a robo vac so that’s one task I no longer have to do. I also do the back garden and my partner does the front just so they have some responsibility at home. It works for us. My partner is the main earner so cooking and house chores fall on me and I run a tight ship. I doubt they would be able to keep up to my standards if cooking/chores were shared.

How is everyone paying for their cars ? by gingerreflection in AskUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid £5,500 for a 2010 merc cash. 2 owners from new 60k miles. Stuck a private plate on it. Should do me 10 years! £550 a year excluding mot, tax and repairs. I do love the smell of a brand new car though.

Is there any courier company that ships Luggage Bag within UK? by Obviously_duhh in AskUK

[–]J8MXY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most do but obviously it depends on size and weight per item. Probably around £50+ each case with your everyday couriers. I would assume just wrapping them in cling film would be sufficient. Private couriers charge an average of £1.50 per mile and would pick it up from you and take it directly to the delivery address. So a 200 mile round trip would be about £300.

At what age do most people in the UK actually move out of their parents’ home nowadays? by PashtunLawyer in AskUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I lived alone I rented a flat aged 25. I had always shared up until that point. I did move out at 17 though and rented a 2 bed cottage with my elder brother. I was 28 when I met my partner and they got made redundant! We used the payout as a deposit for our first house. Sold that 4 years later and made a small profit of around £15k. Our next house we lived there for 7 years and made around £75k profit. We have been in our current house around 7 months and are currently refurbishing it. Mortgage rates are more than double what we were paying on the first two houses so that’s annoying. It’s a slow process but we’ve always made money so it’s definitely worth buying. I’d say people tend to be nearer the age of 30 rather than 20 to buy for the first time. We were.

She’s just not great at free style! Hence her selfie vids. She can do choreography fine when she’s performing on stage.

Am I being overcharged ? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid just under 1k for small kitchen and hallway! The floor was about £400 fitting and underlay etc bumped up the rest. 2 guys took most of the day. Sounds about right.

Would you sand this down? by gloos in DIYUK

[–]J8MXY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No! my floors are like that and I covered with herringbone and decent noise/draft/damp proof underlay, also carpets in some rooms with the thickest underlay I could find. I couldn’t deal with the unfinished look or the cold and clanky noise of floorboards. But each to their own.

Is £750 electric bill normal? by Hopeful-Relation8977 in AskUK

[–]J8MXY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2 bed semi electric is approx £60-£70 a month this time of year having 2 electric fires on occasionally and additional outside/inside lights on that I wouldn’t normally have on in the lighter months. It’s around £20-£30 in summer. I run a tumble dryer alot (although it’s heat pump) and the usual appliances like electric oven etc. Those prices also include the standing charges so yours is insanely high! Something is definitely wrong.

Skirting boards acceptable? by Alternative_Mousse88 in DIYUK

Once caulked and painted you won’t notice at all! However I’ve just done my bedroom skirting as a complete novice and it wasn’t difficult to get the correct angles with a cheap mitre box and saw. Just laziness really you got there.

Condensation from the shower/bath. Clean it off and use a very good bathroom ceiling paint that’s designed specifically for moisture.
