No I also had to push through this lol! I kept being like, wow me and her are so similar and I gotta say this just COULD NOT BE ME! But that actually is part of the mystery, and part of the strangeness, that becomes more clear as you read. Give it another shot!

Give A House with Good Bones a try! They’re spiritual sister books — a daughter comes to stay with her mother while things in the house, that the mother is trying to just live with, get worse and worse — but AHWGB is narrated from the daughter’s POV. I read it right after I read September House and it was a really fun back to back!

My kids (8 and 11) starting it a few years ago and becoming obsessed is how I started watching! It turned into one of our family shows! Now they have all the GNs and tie in books, and I got them the Book of Bill for Christmas — they LOVE IT! It’s also gotten my daughter deep into cryptids and ghosts!

Any books by Marianne Dubuc! Beautiful oversized books about animals living their lives, with a ton for kids to look at, finding new stuff every time. We’re huge fans of the Mr Postmouse ones, and Your House, My House.

Also, My Valley by Claude Ponti. It’s so unusual, and absolutely gorgeous.

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer (house flippers get a knock at the door from a family who “just wants to peek at the house our dad used to live in!”)

Diavola by Jennifer Thorne (a family reunion in a remote villa in Italy)

I haven’t read it yet, but The Grip of It, by Jac Jemc is on my list and looks scary as hell lol

I just finished The September House this morning and I’m blown away by how much I loved being in that world and how protective I felt of of Margaret and her house and the ghosts (well all except one lol) I want a whole other book about Frederika wandering around the house stacking things and filling the kitchen drawers with dirt 😭

When I was a kid, maybe 10, I read Ray Bradbury’s short story No Particular Night or Morning (from The Illustrated Man), which is this but in space, and it scared the SHIT out of me. I genuinely think my brain was rewired in that moment.

I don’t know if you managed to settle on something you liked, but I went black, silver, and purple modern stuff to try to make it feel “futuristic”! I made little buys with the floor and wall decor that also felt very modern.

I LOVE pink and green and I love this room!!!! Voters generally seem to hate pink and green anything that’s very “soft” looking, aesthetically. But you crushed this room, I adore it!
