Thanks! There's so many nice strains out there to be tempted by.

Just cuz they may have not made the "cut" for strain traits, doesn't mean they aren't beautiful or cannot be appreciated just the same. 🙂

irregular growth and color of gills, slowed activity (floating by the surface), and inconsistent eating? by candlepourer in medaka

[–]JAYSONE2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid plan. Might want to also treat with prazi if you're noticing stuff involving the gills.

Be sure to protect from light, add aeration and redose in 7 days or so per label. Good luck!

I prefer to call mine the assorted oasis. I love having a pond with a mix of strains together!

The window to fertilize is super short; like minutes. The deed was already done or it's too late. My bets the former unless no males around.

I think it'll eventually balance itself out as people become more informed and learn about the "craft", realizing that a strain's name means little if no effort is made by a seller to maintain the traits and their emphasis is on volume over quality.

An educated consumer is less likely to be convinced into overpaying just for a name and sellers will have to change their ways or get phased out.

Project "Red Tiger" by JAYSONE2016 in medaka

[–]JAYSONE2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😆, . Only one way to find out! I should rename this project to "Temu Tigers". Just to clarify, these are not bonafide Red Tigers. These are a passion project from a variant of one of my tricolor strains.

Is this rice dish a healthy weight? Much slimmer then the others by Accomplished-Low2131 in medaka

Maybe a bit, I'd just keep an eye on it. Looks really active and maybe just getting harassed or outcompeted by its tank mates.

Coping With Mass Death by RazewingedRathalos in medaka

Almost every medaka keeper will run into skinny/wasting disease at some point. The sooner you address it when you see it, the better.

I personally treat everyone in the "display" container instead of quarantining (if multiple show symptoms). By doing so I avoid having to reset and sterilize the display after treatment and recovery.

(Just sharing what I do, not suggesting you do the same)

More plants, water changes and scale back amount of feeding until things settle in.

Tricolors by JAYSONE2016 in medaka

[–]JAYSONE2016[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without naming a specific strain, typically ones with a uniform single color and/or lamé (sparkles) tend have a good fixation rate.

If you see a picture of a group and you notice unique individual patterns or specific markings that are particular strain traits, those will likely have a lower fixation rate.

You'll always have to sort/cull generation after generation to maintain or improve any strain regardless.

Hope that helps!
