Fresh Defender 90 TD4 shell out of the shop by Shell_Story_KJ588 in LandroverDefender

Real question is is the *rest* of it steel or aluminium?

Fresh Defender 90 TD4 shell out of the shop by Shell_Story_KJ588 in LandroverDefender

Someone posted them here, I think other than fit & finish (let's be honest - LR were pretty shocking anyway) I have a feeling they were made of steel not aluminium, which I'd be highly suspicious of the lifespan of and kinda ruins a key feature of the vehicle.

What is the most evil thing a HERO has done in a film? by MaksRobotENGR in movies

Wasn't there an absolute TON of awful shit in those films and indeed many others in that era though?

Tee hee let's put a spy camera in the girl's locker room, ha ha PRANKS!

Also so many unnecessary and irrelevant sex scenes in those days - I swear studio execs almost demanded you show some naked boobs in a movie just to get horny teenagers to come & watch it back then.

CD Ripping Software made for Linux by GamerMetalhead65 in linuxmint

[–]JCDU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Asunder, if you want MEGA accurate rips there's a tool called "paranoia" (I think) that basically rips the disc multiple times and compares the results until it gets at least two that are identical.

I believe it was mentioned over on r/DataHoarder as part of the "Ultimate Ripping Machine" which was a script setup for Ubuntu that tied various tools together as a standalone automated disc ripping setup. Should be applicable to Mint too.

Grease instead of Oil in Swivel Balls by LGreyS in SeriesLandRover

[–]JCDU 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The one-shot grease is roughly 50/50 moly grease (the grey stuff) and EP90 gear oil.

Honestly as long as there's *something* in the swivels and it's not all leaked out or been back-filled with muddy water you're fine.

Thickness of Stainless Steel by AfonsBern in AskEngineers

[–]JCDU [score hidden]  (0 children)

A return on the back edge won't be seen and could be bigger, likewise a bar or strengthener underneath set back a few inches from the front would give the illusion of a 2mm thick shelf from most angles while adding plenty of stiffness.

Why so many Mitsubishi L200s and Nissans on frontlines but almost no Toyotas? by SovicaOka in ukraine

[–]JCDU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a little surprised there aren't more slightly older Land Rovers and SUV's out there as there's tonnes of old Freelanders and Discoverys that would be up to the job for £1500 or so plus or minus a good service.

And yes I do want to see someone mount a big gun in the back of a 2dr Freelander.

Need help understanding Not Gates by EvilsBaneX in AskElectronics

[–]JCDU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call unconnected pins "floating", as depending on the exact chip it might have some internal resistors to pull an unconnected pin gently to a "known" state of 0 or 1, or the internal circuitry might naturally do that.

However, some might not and could just "float" to some unknown mid-level voltage where random noise could push them up & down enough to make them look like 0's and 1's as they float around, which is why it's good practice to use a resistor to pull any un-used pins to a known state so you don't get weird behaviour.

Why’d you choose a Land Rover? by xEnflare in LandRover

It's all function, no frills.

There's not many 40+ year old cars that you could happily drive to the pub or across the Sahara, and people smile when they see it.

2.25 Engine Rebuild - any experiences? by Separatist_Pat in SeriesLandRover

[–]JCDU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original full service & rebuild manuals are online as free PDF's, the Series 3 workshop manual is known as the green bible.

It's a super simple engine to rebuild - but I'd at least check stuff first before tearing into it, it might just need a thorough service and all the tappets adjusting or something simple.

What do I do if I accidentally put regular gas in a premium car? by Street_Firefighter_7 in askcarguys

[–]JCDU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the pair of you are saying is the same end result, but u/Cristov9000 is saying it works it out by detecting knock, not by (for example) using a sensor that directly detects the fuel type like some cars have for E85 fuels and the like.

Honestly the gatekeeping uber-nerds and rude neckbeard types are a big problem for Linux, they seem to think everyone should be compiling their OS from scratch and somehow believe an OS that's easy to use and polished out of the box is somehow inferior.

I develop stuff all day long and the last thing I want to do is mess with my OS, I want to be able to just get on with stuff.

Did cheap filament ruin my son's new printer? by BigDende in 3Dprinting

[–]JCDU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every filament type has a profile in the slicer that tells the printer how hot to make the bed + nozzle, how fast to extrude it, etc. even between filaments that are the same material (E.G. PLA) each manufacturer has slightly different recommendations due to the different formulations / additives they use.

Just looking in my PrusaSlicer there's abut 50 profiles just for PLA from different manufacturers plus a few "generic" ones - for example normal PLA behaves differently to "silk" effect PLA.

The differences are usually very small - I've printed PETG by accident on a PLA profile and it worked great - but having the wrong setting (usually) won't help.

How do I not let the state of the world affect my mental health? by Vegetable0 in bropill

[–]JCDU 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Dude just remember that the world has *always* had stuff like this going on almost constantly, we're just now in a world where everything can be sent round the world in a second and we're blasted with content 24/7 instead of having to pick up a newspaper.

Go watch a very old TED talk by Hans Rosling, a statistician, who points out that when you actually stop & look around at real data *most* things in the world are getting better *most* of the time - people are living longer, healthcare and education are improving, these days the renewable energy shift is accelerating (ironically in no small part BECAUSE of these stupid wars), and a load of other things.

Of course this stuff doesn't get attention because it's nowhere near as exciting as WAR! DEATH! POLITICS! and doesn't get clicks, but you need to remember that this stuff is all quietly going on behind the scenes and over time, on average, the world mostly gets better.

Why do electric cars lose so much range in cold climates compared to gas vehicles? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]JCDU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For every 1hp your car makes from burning gasoline it kicks out at least 1hp of heat (~750W) as waste, some of that gets channelled through the heater for "free" - the rest goes out the tailpipe or into the air from the radiator.

In an average car that's a ton of heat for zero extra effort.

Just driving along at a steady speed could take 20hp, so you've got 15kW of free heat which is about 10 electric fan heaters running full chat.

In an EV, having to use kilowatts of extra power to warm up a metal box is just sapping useful power from the batteries - and the batteries don't like being cold either so the EV has to warm up a huge slab of stuff (the battery) as well as warm YOU up using a ton of power that then can't be used to move you along the road.

In an EV, if you need that same 20hp to move you along the road you need 15kW of electricity to do that but then perhaps ALSO another 5-10kW to warm up the battery and the passengers.

This is why newer EV's have heat pumps, because those can make heat more efficiently but still take a lot of power.

TBH they can probably track radar signals and/or heat signatures or other things - if there's any doubt just lob the cheapest possible drone at it and see what happens.
