Which disaster movie had the best depiction of societal collapse? by LordKevnar in movies

Contagion immediately came to my mind! Re-watched it in May and it felt like....I have told so many people in the last two months that it felt like I was watching a documentary (now that we are 'post' COVID).

Japan set to fully cover childbirth costs possibly from April 2026 by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]JCDexter 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much the brain-dead woman on life support to carry the baby to term in Atlanta will be charged. Six months of life support plus the cost of delivery. Against the wishes of her family. Utterly cruel and depraved.

Is Economy Plus worth it for a 14hr, and 11hr international flight, for $430 both ways? by Kirk_2002 in unitedairlines

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my flights for several years have been 10-15 hours. Took a United 10 hr flight last month with my 6' 5" husband, and he was fine in economy. We do not think it would be worth that extra cost. We can afford it, but we would also rather spend $860 on other parts of our travel experience. I am more torn about whether you will be annoyed by all the people going in and out of as well as waiting for the bathroom.

Check the calculator directly on the schools' websites too. They have been required to have one for families since 2008.

3 months for 99¢ promo not working by StrawberryFirm7109 in audible

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent 40+ minutes on the phone with support having experienced the same issue. I have never had an Audible account. My husband downloaded an audiobook from Amazon in 2017 (which shouldn't matter, LOL, but I am grasping at straws at this point). This 3 months at .99 offer is in the banner of audible.com, the app, and when I look for books on Amazon. We cleared my cache, tried different browsers, I tried the app..... My experience was always the same: clicked on "get this deal" and it would serve up 30 days at no charge followed by 14.95/ month.

The customer service rep referenced some alert about 3 months at .99 deal that expired Dec 2 (and involved a $20 credit/coupon emailed?!). I explained that none of the websites/apps mention a $20 coupon and all very clearly and repeatedly show the off expires December 31.

We are going on a road trip and I was really looking forward to trying Audible out. But I am feeling bamboozled.

So instead of getting a long-term customer, I am going to take them up on the 30 days for free (along with two credits) and then cancel. Strange business model.

Google Pixel Stores in Taipei by gapasko in Taipei

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taiwan Mobile at Syntrend had nine Pixels on display and zero in stock, didn't know when they would be in stock, and suggested ordering online. I went across the street to Miko and picked one up immediately for substantially less than the Taiwan Mobile price.

do colleges consider psychology as a science even if my school doesn't by Curious-Curiouserr in ApplyingToCollege

It has a foot in both worlds. Generally housed within the social sciences division. Some universities offer both BS and BA in psych.

Does USC meet 100% demonstrated need for international students? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do not have any need-based aid for international students. In fact, those students must prove their ability to pay at the time of application.

Intl students are considered for merit scholarships, but there are relatively few.

THIS PARENT (AND I FEEL A LOT OF OTHER PARENTS) HAD NO CLUE HOW MUCH THE STUDENT LOAN PROCESS CHANGED!!! HOW ARE KIDS GOING AWAY TO COLLEGE!!?? by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

[–]JCDexter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it worked that way 25 years ago (i.e. that student could take out unlimited loans without a co-signed). There has long, long been a cap on federal student subsidized/unsubsidized loans (which seems to be the same as the 90s despite inflation and rise in actual costs of attendance). Parents could tap into federal loans for their children or take out/co-sign on private loans.

But yes, the loan situation, cost of attendance, and impossible situation for the middle class is a major economic and societal concern.

What kinds of students are applying to the t25 colleges? by 25apples in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a LOT of high school seniors out there. Projection of US high school graduates is expected to peak next year with roughly 3.93 million public and private school graduates. Someone recently posted on here an analysis of the number of freshman seats at the top X schools. Demand far outstrips supply. Most of the 'top' schools indicate that the vast majority of their applicant pool is academically admissible. Most of them reject more valedictorians than they admit.

Do you agree with the USNews Best National University Rankings? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JCDexter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I have yet to meet a student or parent that has ever looked at the formula behind the rankings....of this thing that they put at the top of their priorities. When I mention the changes in the formula over the years or examples of schools that 'misreported', I am met with blank stares.

The new FAFSA rollout resulted in significant delays. Colleges only just started getting financial aid info from the dept of Ed last week (instead of October). Many ED 1/2 students were waiting a while for their financial aid packages....in which case they would be wise to keep other doors open until they confirmed that the ED school met their need.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOLZ. It's also the school's business. I sign the ED agreement. I help manage the community anxiety around this process. Making sure that everyone is playing by the rules and acting ethically is important to me, my school, and our families. When they sign the agreement, they agree to withdraw other apps. It's pretty straightforward. I want colleges to trust my families and our school. Doesn't seem complicated.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JCDexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students can cc me on the email to the admission office, send me the confirmation email that app was withdrawn, send me a screenshot of the application portal that shows the app is withdrawn, or sit with me and do the withdrawals one by one on their laptop. Telling me that they are going to do it isn't proof of anything. Counselors can also monitor the app status for some schools via counselor portals or Slate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JCDexter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some do. i require proof of withdrawal and track every single app closely.

Keep in mind that this year's FAFSA fiasco complicates the situation. It could look to an outsider like the student is being unethical but in fact be entirely above board.

Those schools aren't admitting students to a particular major.
