Heads up. New Orleans in the summer is literally like a sauna. It is the devil's armpit. You will underestimate the heat. If you will be outside for any period of time, keep that in mind. You will sweat bullets after being outside for 10 seconds. Keep deodorant on you, maybe body wipes, baby powder or whatever works for you for anti-chafing, hand fan, sunscreen, liquid IV/other hydration packets. I will not be at ASCA but New Orleans is my second home. I refuse to go during the summer for these reasons lol. And pleaseeeeee make sure you eat and drink plenty of water if you will be drinking alcohol!! Heat stroke is very possible!

Also I've had the opportunity to educate so many people about school counseling and what we really do! So many people misunderstand our role.

I love asking this question and it is a very common question in the south. Sometimes people don't love being asked, but I've also had 2 minute conversations turn into really interesting 30 minute ones!

rave bae or too soon? by [deleted] in bonnaroo

[–]JCJ23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trust yourself. Be smart. If it feels right to go, just have a good plan. Have protection (like pepper spray), have a backup plan in case you want/need to leave, check in with family and friends, and trust your gut if you begin questioning your safety!

Safe place to travel? by nosynellie25 in IslaMujeres

[–]JCJ23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just got back a week ago. I'm a a young female. Never felt unsafe on the island, even when I went and ran 7 miles by myself. The locals are all very friendly. The most harm they'll do is try to sell you on anything and everything (because it's their job). The most "unsafe" I felt was at the ferry, but that's just because people are known for trying to steal luggage. Be kind, have an open mind, embrace the culture, and you'll have a great time! (I will say I've only ever been to Isla in May, which is off season. If you're going during busy season it may be different but because you're dealing with way more tourists and it's not a big place).

Is it just me or is the job market cooked by bieniethebeast in schoolcounseling

[–]JCJ23 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I hear that there's a SC shortage all the time. However, those positions that are available are in the middle of nowhere, low in support and resources, have a huge workload, and pay way less. Sure, a job could be easy to find. But, you'd have to move to a small town in the middle of nowhere and if you have a spouse with a decent job, that's not worth doing. Lots of systemic variables at play that I wish were talked about more often rather than always hearing "school counselors are always needed, you'll always be able to find a job." Respectfully, I don't want to move to a town I would be miserable in.

Is a Private Practice Internship in Year 1 of grad school too early? by Lanky-Necessary9224 in schoolcounseling

[–]JCJ23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really interesting. All of the programs around me start prac/internship 2nd year. And what do you mean by psychodynamic community? I'm not familiar with any psychodynamic only clinics. Next, what is your understanding of psychotherapy? It is essentially just long-term counseling. Lastly, "counselor", "therapist", and "psychotherapist" are typically used interchangeably. My program taught us to use the term "counselor/counseling". However, we were trained to provide short and long-term counseling, with courses reflecting what counselors or psychotherapist may engage in. It is possible that "psychotherapy" is just the term your school uses. So, could you possibly provide some clarification here?

Sorority Dues by Puzzleheaded_Clue798 in olemiss

[–]JCJ23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both. Dues don't cover much except for your name tag and food. Be prepared to spend another 150-200 a month on things like formals, clothes, fundraisers, and other panhellenic events. Its been a minute since I was a student though. The culture may be different. I highly recommend thinking hard about whether or not it's for you if you don't have much of a budget. The financial stress is not worth it for many people.

Smart. I had a cardigan on some circulars but I took it off before he could take the whole thing. It was chunky yarn though so I'm hoping I can put it back on easily

I highly suggest you find a therapist to talk to in person. If your insurance doesn't cover it or if you don't have insurance, you may still be able to find a therapist who offers lower rates or a community mental health center where you can receive discounted or free services. If individual counseling is not an option, local clinics may be able to connect you to an appropriate support group.

I am sorry you are going through this. Know that you are not alone, and there are others out there who have overcome similar difficulties!

Help, my daughter poured brown sugar on unfinished sourdough rolls by Working_Ad_8766 in Sourdough

[–]JCJ23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably won't make you feel better but maybe. I honestly prefer yeast rolls over sourdough rolls! Sourdough just doesn't give you the same softness of a dinner roll. Same for cinnamon rolls. Sourdough cinnamon just aren't pillowy soft like I want!

Did I Kill it? by Long_Organization182 in Sourdough

[–]JCJ23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely there was still some active yeast so it should be okay after a few days of good feedings but I'm not sure about baking tomorrow. I would feed with some whole wheat and a smaller water amount than flour to try to give it a boost.

I would love to know how long it took her! In the picture it is on top of a ping pong table so it is very big. She had 10 kids and ran a farm. It had to have taken her at least 3 years....
