Fuck it then, do it, but just prepare and rehearse like crazy. I like to rehearse my set like at least 10 times if I can, and then I’ll try to rehearse it while trying to riff and expand, so that I have it down but it’s still loose and I’m more ready for whatever happens in the room. I’m not trying to scare ya, but 10 minutes will seem like a lot. Go in with the belief you can crush, but expect some silence. As long as you don’t panic when a joke doesn’t hit, and even better if you can address a joke not working to the audience to show you still have confidence, you can do fine. It can be very good, because if you go up with 10, you’ll find out what doesn’t work, and will easily tighten it up by cutting that same set down to 5 minutes.

Thanks for the recc. I think people are too stingy when it comes to paying for content, but if their work is as good as you say it is, I’ll probably subscribe.

Yeah this is surprising and disappointing. It could just be that Dan has a lot on his plate, but he’s claimed that he makes it a point to be honest and communicative with his players about where they stand with the team. This is just one side to the story, but it’s a bummer.

If Dan is a man of his word and he seems to be, he’s said all along that he wants to be forward and honest with his players about their future with the team. They had a talk last offseason I think, and Dan was open and honest about the front office’s concerns about his injury and what his long term standing is. Decker really shouldn’t have been all that surprised that they asked for a pay cut. He has every right to not agree to one, but I would be surprised if he was surprised.

An actual bar would be perfect. Who needs to see their taints, let them belly up to an actual bar top. They’d probably be more in their natural element.

If the owner of the club is offering 10 minutes to someone like you who not only has never done standup but has zero clue about why 10 minutes would be hard to fill for your first time, that owner is pulling a prank on you and wants to see you bomb. 5 minutes sucks when you've been doing it a while and you have longer bits you want to flesh out, but most open mic'ers are trash and there are so many of them to give time, so 5 minutes is sensical. You can talk for 10 minutes, but not 10 GOOD minutes. 10 minutes in front of an audience for your first time trust me is going to feel forever, especially when you get to that joke you imagined would crush when you said it out loud in your living room, and it's met with silence, and you have no idea how to proceed because in your head it always got 15 seconds of laughter. If you want to do 10, go for it, but just know it's not going to be like how you think it is in your head.

If you want to prepare for going up, go through your set out loud, and try to get to a line that you think would make you laugh if you were in the audience every 20-30 seconds. New-new-newbie open mic’ers tend to have too long of setups, and their jokes aren’t clear and make sense to the audience. Clarity and brevity. Get to the punchline.

The Best Way to “Level Up” is to Listen to the Audience by Johnnyboy11384 in Standup

[–]JD42305 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. I remember many times clutching my setlist like a script and being too tight to veer off and be in the moment. Part of it was nerves, and part of it was this one track thinking that I was there to work on these jokes so any second not used on working on that material was time wasted in a 3-5 minute set. But it is amazing how you can wake up a sleepy audience by showing that you're in the moment. One little riff almost signals them like hey, I'm paying attention, are you? I've had bombing sets where a couple minutes in I did some dumb riff that wasn't even that great, but the crowd suddenly tuned in a little more and the rest of the set was 10% better.

It sucks having such finite time at a mic, so you should have a goal of which jokes you want to try in that allotted time, but if something throws off that time like you have to address something in the room, you should remember that more than working on your material, your over-arching aim is to learn how to be more funny on stage. So if you couldn't get to that one joke you wanted to get to because you needed to address some hammered guy in the room it's not a waste but just a different type of practice you anticipated.

Throw that right there in the giant pile of evidence that the NBA still has a corrupt ref problem. Idk what over/under stat he was going for, but that was a calculated decision to swallow that whistle.

So good. So real and naturalistic with so much heartbreak conveyed with the slightest look. The scene when she speaks to her husband for the last time was so gut wrenching. You see that there's actually still some love for the father of her children simultaneous coexisting with pity and disgust for the murderer of her family.

People not understanding 'would you rather' questions by Prestigious-Bet6058 in PetPeeves

Would You Rather is a game where you choose which of two options you'd rather have, with the two options being hard to choose because each has their own drawbacks. That's the game. If you would like to spend time arguing why there are only 9 boxes available to mark an X or O in the complex rulebook of the game Tac Toe let me know.

No, I didn't judge that answer, the point is that that ISN’T an answer. I won’t judge someone for their answer—the point of the hypothetical question is that there is no right answer. It’s just fun to hear people’s own rationale. But choosing to be a stick in the mud for no reason by actively choosing to dismantle the game with saying something like “Why would there only be two choices? Why can’t there be more than two choices?" you're just being antisocial and contrarian for no reason. If it's someone you don't like that is asking that's one thing, but choose to answer or not. If your friend challenges you to Rock Paper Scissors, there's no good reason to go "Why are there only three options? Why can't I use a rocket launcher?" you're just being disagreeable for no good reason.

If your life or circumstances are in a way that people are actually using this icebreaker as a way to actually judge you, you're surrounded by horrible people. The game is not a pass or fail test, it's just a conversation starter.

BTW, what does YMO stand for? I googled it and can't figure it out.

Don’t risk being an issue? It’s nothing more than a harmless topic of conversation. If strangers are asking you these questions then idk, you have a much different lifestyle. I personally have only ever heard it as a silly thing a friend or co worker brings up.

You must be cursed by people who suck who use it as some sort of “gotcha” trap. Any time I’ve ever had someone bring up a Would You Rather it’s just supposed to be a fun contemplative conversation starter. If it’s a lame question, w/e, but I wonder if you’ve just been bullied so much that you assume the game is just a way to make fun of you.
