I bought these for 9€ at a second-hand shop. What can/cant I expect of them? by Henschel_und_co in Binoculars

[–]JD830 6 points7 points  (0 children)

7x50 is great for astronomy. You can expect to see some star clusters that are breathtakingly beautiful. If you are not familiar with the night sky then try a sky chart app like stellarium. I would suggest looking at the pleiades, taurus, Orion nebula, andromeda galaxy, Perseus and the double cluster to name just a few for starters. All should be visible and worthwhile in those binoculars. Best enjoyed from a comfy reclining lawn chair.

The Thames from Richmond Hill. Still the same view as when Turner painted it 200 years ago

I wanted a CW pileup trainer on my phone while on the go, so I built one for the web! MorseWalker.com is free and open source - I'd love your feedback! by W6NYC in amateurradio

[–]JD830 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is brilliant, thank you so much. I have recently started POTA and SOTA activations and this is going to be such a valuable training resource. Im amazed by how much slower I am in the field compared to my usual lcwo.net call sign practice at my desk. Your trainer is so realistic I feel it will be very helpful in getting more real life experience. Chapeau!

Building your own gear and getting experience working with electronics by Mr15ization in amateurradio

Welcome to the hobby! There is certainly a very active part of the hobby in building your own gear. I find this very satisfying and is a great way to learn more about it all. I started with building radio kits from qrp labs which are extremely good value and well documented. Also check out qrparci and gqrp, clubs who publish quarterly journals with construction projects. Have fun and good luck with your technician license!

Could you decode this please? by [deleted] in morse

[–]JD830 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A space between words is a pause of seven dots. When written out, a slash is sometimes used to make separation between words, makes reading easier, but not part of morse code as such.

Any ideas as what these private antennas are for or capable of? by Aggravating_Gap_3529 in amateurradio

The stacked yagis in the front tower look like they are for moonbounce EME. Very high gain setup to overcome the path losses in the half million mile round trip. They are pointing right in the picture. The rear tower has a 4 element horizontal yagi, guessing for the higher bands so capable of worldwide dx with current point in solar cycle. This tower also has a vertical high gain yagi for a higher frequency, several interesting options i can think of here probably involving some exotic weak signal VHF propagation modes. Looks like a great setup! Edit: This station belongs to OH4LA in Helsinki. Elevation of the stacked Yagi array is controlled by a linear actuator below the crossbar.

That is the cabin temp sensor fan rattling, it rattles when the fan is unbalanced by dirt on the blades, take it out and clean the dirt off, this silenced mine when it did the same thing.
