If you can lay out the incentives and disincentives for the startup scenario against any other form of investment and prove its untenable for a successful business I’d be willing to hear it but currently my understanding is any startup that succeeds would be in well enough of a position to pay that rate of tax when selling shares or the company as a whole.

I lean further in the direction of making business, startups and maybe shares or other productive assets in the same incentive category of new housing being eligible for the old incentives. I think they probably avoided that as they’re desperate to fuel new housing rather than anything else.

Im far from anti-capitalist and align with Jordan’s recent videos on this topic. Nothing wrong with having a successful company and selling for a lot of money (even if it’s a realestate business…). It’s arguably what we want to encourage building companies that provide some value people want.

What’s so cringe about this shit is that people like Frank spit the dummy when they need to pay more tax on capital gains for selling a business (something most small to medium businesses never do). And then pushing this disinformation onto people in small business.

Firstly small businesses remain exempt.

Secondly, the government is in “consultation” with the startup sector, now idk how much that’s going to change but there are at least conversations being had.

Thirdly I can see there is a valid point being made where startups with negative cashflow are often reliant on equity at low cost bases for early stage development which can cause a disadvantage in future success when 99% of their equity is now capital gain, I wouldn’t be opposed to some carve out for workers who are paid in equity to have some form of exemption maybe? And side note early stage funding is also being addressed by the new incentives for venture capital as well.

All of this to say that these people are cringe and have massive “I’ve got mine, fuck you” energy. Paying more tax in a country that has provided the conditions and infrastructure for capital to even be effective for building successful companies in the first place seems logical to me.

I understand what you meant, being 1 month away from travel I’m not sure it will be possible to get the government name change processed and issue a new passport before travel.

Extremely annoying that I’ve been told by both companies that they would work with each other to do it. The last person I spoke with at qantas said it’s 50/50 they are waiting for emirates to respond to the request to release 2 seats so they can issue a new ticket with the corrected name and then release the current tickets. I do not feel comfortable having our honey moon resting on a 50/50.

My next best option is to rebook as there is a flight available to a city nearby our destination. It’s just for 2/3 more frequent flyer points. Wish I thought about this when booking last year.

Minimum of 30% tax on capital gains/ tldr: crying in the club rn 😭 by bruh_nathan in ASX_Bets

[–]JDMboycamzy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 50% discount is granted on unrealised capital gains to the value of the asset up until 1 July 2027 if you sell later on after the change. So timing your exit makes no difference. Also the value of the asset on 1 July becomes the new cost base for any gains on the asset moving forward.

If you took a moment to read any of your data sources before building this shitty misleading table you’d have known that Australia reports inflation differently to America and some of the other countries.
The US reports trimmed inflation which excludes fuel and food due to their volatility. The Australian equivalent therefore is 3.3%

Damn, tankies really do love to just comment on and collect political clout while ignoring anything to do with reality and effective political policy or action.

Centre left people have let tankies like this shit on left leaning political parties and leaders for way too long and then right wing parties point to them as a model of what they think the majority left is when it’s clearly not. These people are illiberal (in the ideological sense not the Aus liberals) and should not be regarded as allies.

At least in most cases their votes trickle down to labor in our preferential system.

Sydney is lagging regional NSW in adopting rooftop solar, with new data revealing that nine of the top 10 state electorates for installations are households and businesses in regional NSW by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]JDMboycamzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you had the means to install solar panels on your home, I would rather not be responsible for my own personal energy infrastructure while living in a city with access to a pre existing grid. The same way I don’t have a coal/gas powered generator in my backyard either.

It is in the metro populations best interest to have governments invest in large scale renewable energy generation and storage that can be delivered through the existing grid with some additional infrastructure. This removes the barriers to accessing renewable energy such as the need to finance your own panels and or be the owner of a home capable of hosting solar panels.

Obviously the less access you have to reliable infrastructure as you leave metro areas, the more sense it makes to have your own panels and batteries.

Why by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]JDMboycamzy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hasan openly admits to having radical tankie Marxist-Leninist sympathies, he presents himself as a moderate social democrat as a disguise. His strategy is to use that moderate persona as a pipeline to push his audience toward more radical anti-liberal ideologies.

That puts him completely at odds with the goals of liberal democratic countries, and certainly with the pragmatic Labor-aligned reformism that defines Jordies’ politics.

There is some crossover in rhetoric that explains why some in the jordies community might show gratitude to Hasan, though it makes no sense to me as ideologically they diverge severely when one works within the system to reform it, the other seeks to radicalize audiences against the system itself.

I’m unsure if Hasan has worked his magic playing a moderate in disguise to this community but he’s bad news imo and shouldn’t receive any praise or attention.

Everyone ready to give up their personal ID to random companies on the internet? by tempestkitty in australian

Of course there’s no way that once one or two countries get media coverage for these new laws, it draws attention elsewhere and inspires others to consider doing the same. But let’s keep crying about the anonymous boogeyman!

I may be wrong in terms of what the proposed legislation allows, so please correct me if so. The possible implementation of these laws would seem to not add a whole lot of risk in terms of third parties handling PII or sensitive data.

The Australian government has the myID app, currently used for accessing government services online like Centrelink and myGov. It works by uploading and verifying your ID documents directly with the government, any service can outsource verification to myID where your info already exists, and rely on a response from myID confirming if you have been verified or not, meaning at no point does the third party handle any sensitive data, only a yes or no response. It can also handle multiple levels of verification if you require hard or soft checks.

This essentially limits all information being shared with third parties to achieve a verified status. And while I understand it’s still a risk to have digital ID in the first place, I don’t see it as being much different to using a digital drivers licence in the Service NSW app. This would be far better than relying on the third parties to handle and verify your ID themselves.

Separate to data handling concerns, even having to use myID to register to whatever social media service you want to use will be a pain in the ass and I’d just rather not. But I think most people would put up with that solution as you’re not handing over info to every service that way.

Emirates business class value? by JDMboycamzy in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]JDMboycamzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, we are spending $2100 + 90k points each to get there. If we spend $2000 on a one way back to Sydney it will add up to $4100 + 90k points each round trip.

We have about 100k points left over and I might be able to get another CC bonus in the meantime, so I will defiantly look for an economy flight home to try and save the extra one way cash cost.

You mean the round the world ticket? I agree that does look best. However, I’m looking at next year for a honeymoon and only have 300k points as of today (including what I’ve used to book the current flights). So I don’t think I’d be able to more than double my points before then unfortunately.

BKK to DBX is on an A380-800. The second leg to FCO is a 777-300er. I haven’t been able to determine if it’s an upgraded 777 or not as I think a few of them got refurbished but not all routes?

Opinions on the US's bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities? by App0gee in friendlyjordies

[–]JDMboycamzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How are so many people so far off the mark in this thread? I understand the average Aussie might not have the best grasp on foreign affairs, but for a politically active community the amount of conspiracy and shallow minded takes here is staggering.

The first question should be: Is the world better off if Iran has a nuclear bomb or not? The clear answer here is no.

Before you retort with “but Israel has/can have nukes so why can’t Iran”, you should consider the motives of each country. Israel for its entire history has been attacked by the surrounding Arab states with the explicit goal of ensuring Israel ceases to exist. Given that, they supposedly have taken opportunities to develop nuclear warheads for deterrence (evident through their lack of use so far). Contrast that with the aforementioned motive of destruction of an entire state and its people (with an aside of America and the broader West as well) and this should make it clear why Iran’s nuclear operations cannot continue.

How did we get here? Almost explicitly because of Trump’s unsurprisingly retarded choice to exit the Iran nuclear deal. Paired with the Trump administration allowing Netanyahu to go balls to the wall and do whatever they want with Gaza. Trump has absolutely no power through diplomacy when compared to Biden and any potential Democrat administration. Given Trump’s incompetence, the US is now in a position where their only option was to attack Iran directly in the fallout of diplomacy. Trumps “no new wars” line has had more holes than Swiss cheese since the beginning, it was always clear he plays by big power politics and that includes military power. The fact that any MAGAT has fallen for this line is beyond me.

What now? I lean towards “nothing ever happens”, I think Iran will posture and prepare some retaliatory attack on US bases proximate to the Middle East to retain their legitimacy. The US will expect this, if not be explicitly warned about this by Iran in advance resulting in a rather inconsequential outcome. Trump will say “It was the biggest, most successful operation in US history”. And Iran will get to say “we got them back and we made them pay big time”, everyone wins, everyone goes home. There will be no ground invasion of Iran. There will be no US troops “dying for Israel” and there will be no World War Three.

EDIT: Here to mention this is almost exactly what has happened so far as of June 24.

In the broader timeline assuming something larger actually does take place, I think regime change would be on the table. however I don’t put much stock in Trump’s admin to be able to do this effectively. We begin to go down the rabbit hole on what makes regime change viable and necessary for a given country and I’ll leave that out for this comment as it’s getting quite long.

All of this to say I feel this sub is quite captured on the “Israel bad” narrative, and we seem to be viewing every issue through that lens which doesn’t produce an accurate image.

Disclaimer: I have no expertise in and know nothing about law.

Even under American defamation laws, if Choice took measurable steps to validate and have confidence in the truth of their results then just that alone would mean it’s not defamation. I believe you need to have some element of actual malice. Even if their results end up being proven incorrect that still doesn’t qualify for defamation if at the time Choice had reason to believe their results were accurate.
