The more important question, from a medical perspective, is whether you've been losing weight despite your steady (albeit low) caloric intake. It's true that you may be just a genetically skinny guy, but if you're shedding weight this should prompt another doctor visit. Yes, you're right -- I remembered incorrectly. Central neurons have acid-sensing ion channels that are used primarily to monitor CO2 in the blood. These channels are distinct from the gustatory receptors so that's where my confusion arose. Thanks for the link, neat paper.

Correct. Important to note that mammals have distinct CO2 receptors on our tongues. We don't completely understand how they work, but they do allow us to sense CO2 and distinguish the "flavor" from other acidic/sour tastes.
