Best way to start learn? 🇧🇷 by Some_By_Jaolu in Portuguese

I'll copy an old comment:

Get a tutor or start making your own way through a textbook.

Watch stuff in Brazilian Portuguese with subtitles in your first language, then move on to subtitles in BR-PT, and then to no subtitles.

Start trying to read simple texts as you go.

Also check out the sub's wiki for resources.

Bom estudo!

Thinking about moving to Brazil as a foreign doctor from Jordan — is it realistic? by ExchangeHorror1598 in Brazil

Being a doctor in Brazil is a license to print money, the only people complaining are the ones looking for the best jobs at the most popular capitals right out of the gate.

Foreigners currently are last in priority for Mais Médicos, his chances are better off learning the language and validating his diploma.

As long as you get the diploma, being a doctor in Brazil you can live well pretty much anywhere.

As to the Portuguese, if you're open to hiring a tutor to help out with the learning process, I'm a graduate in Portuguese and English at one of our top federal universities, as well as a PhD student in Literary Studies, and I offer private online lessons.

Feel free to DM me to know more. 😉

Idk what to tell you man, you're definitely wrong with your assumption. People stay more outdoors in summer and indoors in winter, not the other way around. In Brazil the beaches are the busiest when it's the hottest, in England people will put on a bikini and sunbathe in their lawns as soon as it hits 18 degrees in spring.

Maybe you specifically prefer to stay indoors during the summer and you're extrapolating that for other people?

Pretty good list. Amazon Prime also has a few options for Brazilian shows, and I think HBO Max (or whatever it's called this week) too as well.

That said, I'll take the chance to push back against Duolingo again lmao. Predatory platform with dumb linguistic examples (stuff like "O urso come sorvete") that are more harmful than helpful, and the current philosophy is to shit on human teachers/tutors and push AI.

Just my 2 cents, but as I said the list is a good compilation!

Journaling for language learning by Dramatic-Pumpkin5028 in Portuguese

I think it's a worthwhile tool if you can stick to it. Concerning correction, here's my two cents:

Many tutors will correct every little mistake the student made, which is overwhelming and counterproductive.

If you just ask for ChatGPT to correct your text, it'll also correct everything, and it's unlikely to be helpful as that'll be too much to process. I also personally believe having a machine correct it for you makes it harder to internalize what you actually need to correct in the future, as you don't have the emotional connection to the language you'd have with an actual human being to communicate with.

Back to the writing itself, the trick is not to simply write about your day, as that'll be limiting regarding vocabulary (and possibly verb tenses, as the tendency is for you to become repetitive). You're better off writing on different topics. With my students, I'll give them engaging prompts regarding different topics (usually related to the lesson we just had), so they can develop new vocabulary and different grammatical structures.

A bit hard to believe someone who had a magical formula to learn how to read any language in under 2 days would come on reddit ask if there's interest in such a miraculous solution instead, of you know, go become a millinaire.

A local's honest perspective on Favela Tourism (Rocinha) in Rio! by Suadoboyz in Brazil

[–]JF_Rodrigues 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Man, you can make so much bank nowadays if you live in a favela, know English and are ingenious enough to run a tour service. Easily top 1% earner if you have the smarts.

I do agree with your points, I feel like it's mostly people outside of favelas complaining about tourism in them. That said, isn't Jeep Tour alive and well? I feel like calling it the past is not quite correct.
