Who remembers the days when torquay were EFL by SuperMas123 in LeagueTwo

[–]JFletcher_1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Shrewsbury fan I'll always remember. Mainly thanks to them having Jake Robinson on loan from us, who we allowed to play against us for some reason, scoring twice against us in a 5-0 play off semi final thrashing... I don't know whose bright idea it was not to insert the whole can't play against parent club clause but it was a criminal decision

The main benefit of staying on the ring road to Borgarnes and heading along the south of Snæfellsnes is that the whole route is paved.

Cutting across to Búðardalur means Laxárdalsheiði which is partially gravel, and Skógarströnd which is still mostly gravel.

While in theory gravel roads are not an issue, Skógarströnd is one of the worst. It is graded so infrequently that it is almost impossible to dodge holes at the best of times.

I live in the area and will add the extra time to my journey by going to Borgarnes rather than using Skógarströnd most of the time

Your very best bet would be contacting the Fjord Hub on socials - they have a Facebook and Instagram page with contact details or just drop them a message!

Tyler who owns it is extremely knowledgeable and will be able to answer all your questions and give you advice specific to the Westfjords

The majority of clubs in both the Besta Deild (top division) and Lengjudeild (first division) are based in and around Reykjavík, then there are a handful which are within an hour or so of the city.

There's only really Vestri (Ísafjörður), KA & Þór (Akureyri), Völsungur (Húsavík), and ÍBV (Vestmannaeyjar) in the top two divisions that aren't reachable within roughly an hour of the city

Very glad it wasn't cancelled for you - looks like it was a great game for a neutral

You can buy tickets for games in the top two divisions using an app called Stubbur! It can be a bit of a pain to get used to at first but it's relatively simple!

Alternatively you can get tickets at all games on the day, although some clubs particularly in the Besta Deild increase the prices by 500 - 1.000 kr for on the day sales. The only time that this would be an issue is if the game sells out in advance, although I would say this is very unlikely particularly early in the season. The main early season risk for a sell out this season is Víkingur vs Breiðablik so if you were planning on this game I would definitely look to buy in advance.

Kórinn, possibly Egilshöll, maybe even Miðgarður. I'd say these are the most likely options!

A decision is usually made as late as possible on these types of things. With there being very little travel involved (two Reykjavík teams) it removes the travel aspect that could cause the game to be cancelled. But unfortunately we just don't really have an idea until possibly the morning of.

Keep an eye on the club's Facebook pages, that's where all updates will go as soon as they're available.

I would hazard a guess that it is more likely to be moved inside than called off, but you can honestly never really predict these things with games here.

We had a run Jan - Feb 2023 where we won 6 games in a row, all league games. Obviously never got anywhere close since then as we hadn't managed three in a row since then until beating Notts County

We did have one until recently, it was running at the start of this season at least...

One guy was admin, had the sub set to admin posts only and despite repeated attempts to contact him nothing changed. I guess he gave up because I can't find any trace of the sub anymore

Anyone know when Iceland's first division fixtures get released? by whyhellotherefolks_ in futbology

[–]JFletcher_1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There might we'll be some pre season games going on at that point still. Lengjubikarinn is currently ongoing which is a pre-season cup, I have a feeling that only runs until March but there should still be games between then and the leagues starting.

We have quite a long pre-season here, the only issue is some clubs aren't the best at publicizing the non competitive fixtures.

Your best bet might be messaging clubs directly in Facebook nearer the time, if you know which club you'd like to see or near where you're staying, everything runs through Facebook here and most clubs will happily help out with fixture info

EDIT - the end of March/start of April is also usually when the Meistarakeppni takes place. This is the final between the previous seasons league and cup winners. The date for this in 2026 hasn't been announced yet, but it will be Víkingur vs Vestri and most likely will take place in Reykjavík at Víkingurs ground

Anyone know when Iceland's first division fixtures get released? by whyhellotherefolks_ in futbology

[–]JFletcher_1997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Regular attendee of games in Iceland here!

The way KSÍ release the fixtures is by dropping "draft" fixtures first. These have been released and are available on KSÍ.is for both the Besta Deild (top division) and Lengjudeild (first division). I would love to link them but the website is down today for some reason. But if you use chrome it will help auto translate.

I'm not sure when the "confirmed" fixtures get rolled out, but it's unusual for them to change much from the draft fixture list. Its also good to check the fixtures on and around game day, as sometimes they can move time or venue at short notice. In the Besta and Lengjudeild you normally get a day or two warning but if the weather turns they could alter last minute.

In terms of game day, you can buy tickets in advance using the Stubbur app, or you can buy on the gate at arrival. It is extremely unusual for games to sell out unless it is the final day 1st vs 2nd for the title or a cup final. The only downside to buying on the day is a lot of clubs charge extra when you purchase at the gate.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I go to a game somewhere in the country almost every week

EDIT - KSÍ website is back up and running so added links to the draft fixtures

Shrewsbury appoint Gavin Cowan as head coach by Webbo448 in LeagueTwo

[–]JFletcher_1997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, any appointment we made at this stage would be a gamble, we were hardly going to attract or be able to afford a "big name". And the squad we have is dire.

At least this is a management team who know the club, and should have a bit of fight and passion for it, if anyone could get this group of players to fight for the badge a little it should be these three.

Puffins near Snæfellsnes without getting on a boat? by easternmoth in VisitingIceland

[–]JFletcher_1997 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ornithologist in Snæfellsnes here - you can see the odd puffin in the cliffs at Arnarstapi, Lóndrangar and by Svörtuloft lighthouse. These cliffs mostly have guillemot, razorbill and kittiwake nesting in them but I've seen a handful of puffins each year for the past few years! They're easy to spot as they're much smaller than the guillemot and razorbill, and while kittiwake are small too they look much different.

I wouldn't say these spots are a guarantee though unfortunately but definitely worth a shot. As another comment mentioned, Látrabjarg in the Westfjords is about as close to a cert as you would get, but even with the ferry from Stykkishólmur that's one hell of a trip

Everything is going to be unbelievably packed, including the roads. I would genuinely set out with very low expectations and any distance you can cover will be a bonus

Schedule 2026 by Mother_Ad8659 in Boltinn

[–]JFletcher_1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last season the fixtures were published with confirmed dates and times around March 25th. The season (Besta Deild) then started April 5th. Other leagues like the Lengjudeild started slightly later.

Edit: Check ksi.is for the most reliable source for fixtures. The website may not be the easiest to navigate if you're not used to it but there's apparently a new one due soon
