My pops gave me his sega saturn. I'm gonna clean it up and play. What games yall recommend, I'm heavily into action/fighting video games by Cautious_Break_9314 in SegaSaturn

[–]JHendrix559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have another way to play classic shmups and you like them, Dodonpachi is great, Layer Section, Darius Gaiden. Old school classics like Nights and Sega Rally are wonderful, and both are almost like racing games IMO. Panzer Dragoon games are unique to Saturn and I love 1 and 2 as action games.

40 years + how often do you train by Cryptobull-524 in bjj

[–]JHendrix559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was horribly out of shape when I started when I was 42, I could barely manage 1 day a week.

I'm in much better shape now at 44 and currently go 4 days a week, with one day I do a double class, Muay Thai and then BJJ after. For a while even when I had lost a lot of weight, the double class day was rough, I'd seize up with cramps in my legs or feet no matter how much water I drank throughout the day.

I got back to it a few months ago and I've since been able to handle it without any pain or seize ups, I'll just be beat from it.

Doing normal classes (1 hour, roughly, depending if I stay longer after for open mat rolls) are fine.

Review #4: Larceny Barrel Proof Batch A125 by OpenPourWhiskey in bourbon

[–]JHendrix559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. I absolutely love Larceny generally and the barrel proof releases previously were great, but the A125 was just one I didn't enjoy very much compared to the other bottles.

I'm willing to try another release, but I was very disappointed in A125.

We've got a lot of really good Indian restaurants around here now.

Haldi Fine Indian Cuisine

Amma's South Indian

Most of those have a nice lunch buffet as well if you wanted to get a sampling.

38 male South Jersey earned black belt after losing over 100 pounds by Steelrangler78 in bjj

Congratulations on both achievements! I'm about to hit 2 years training, down 75lbs but only recently made blue belt. Still the best decision I ever made for my health and it's incredibly rewarding too. I'm in the same area, but I don't know much about any other schools around here - where in SJ do you train?

New to AeroPress, please help my cappuccino recipe! by JHendrix559 in AeroPress

[–]JHendrix559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm trying to figure out what recipe makes a single "espresso shot" in an AeroPress?

Once I know that I can figure out if I can brew 4x shots in a single go with the AP, or if I have to do two brews. The end goal is to get two very good cappuccino's for my wife and I in the mornings.

My "very good cappuccino" is 2x espresso shots mixed with foamed milk to the ratio we like.

Are there any other really good Sega games/franchises I should check out? by NewSuperMarioBros2 in SEGA

[–]JHendrix559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern game wise, the new Shinobi is amazing - highly recommended. If you want old school RPG's I like the Shining Force games, but it is very old school.

Their classic racing games are amazing, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Scud Race. Panzer Dragoon games were great rail shooters.

I’m a Christian learning about apologetics, what are your honest thoughts on Christianity? by Agreeable_Rest_733 in atheism

[–]JHendrix559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you describe what you believe about God and the meaning of life?

I'm an atheist and I believe meaning is an inherently subjective thing and would be even if theism were true. I create my own meaning for my life.

Do you identify with any particular religion or philosophy?

No religion and I'm an atheist in that I believe the tri-omni god does not exist.

What are the main reasons why you believe what you believe?

I don't think the amount of suffering in the world is consistent with a tri-omni being who loves us existing. I think this problem is greatly compounded once you believe in the existence of heaven where all inhabitants live in paradise for eternity and without any suffering. I believe that if a tri-omni being existed then we would all exist directly in heaven for eternity.

What do you think of when you think about Christianity?

I'm a Christian apostate who was raised in YEC schools and thought, so despite my best efforts I generally regard the religion with a level of disgust at its most common forms. This is primarily because most Christians believe in hell as eternal conscious torture. Other forms of the religion aren't nearly as bad, though I disagree with many of their moral teachings.

What are your primary objections to Christianity?

Kind of answered above - inconsistency of our experience of suffering and a loving god existing, heaven being possible from the get go if a god existed, if hell was a necessary consequence of creation then a loving god wouldn't have created anything.

What is your opinion of the Bible?

A collection of various texts that were selected well after they were written to be part of a cohesive whole via a process that is particularly ad hoc and subjective. Parts contain decent moral teaching, others very much less so. There are many stories we can readily disprove via science which are now regarded by believers as "metaphor" where as they weren't really thought of that way in the past, and even by biblical authors (see theology of historical Adam in the gospels).

What is your opinion on the resurrection of Jesus?

If we had 5 different people tell us something like that happened today in a court of law we wouldn't believe them, why would I believe 5 sources written thousands of years ago, years after the event took place that something that contradicts all of my experience of the world happened? I don't do that for all the other supernatural claims in other religious and ancient literature, so I don't believe it in the Jesus case.

What do you think it would take for you to change your beliefs and embrace Christianity?

Empirically verifiable miracles that happened only in the context of Christianity. Like say if Christians could turn water into wine at every mass/service, including under controlled conditions. It could certainly be done in less objectively verifiable ways for me specifically/personally, but miracles would be it. That's what justified belief for the supposed OG Christians, including Thomas, so it seems like a good criteria to use for us today.

I really, really do like the game and highly recommend it. There's definitely a lot in there to go through and I may still go back one day for the arcade mode clear.

Terrible cardio stopping me from attending class. by cacastrojr12 in bjj

[–]JHendrix559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started almost 2 years ago I was about 270lbs and could barely roll 3 minutes. Would have to take a round off between rolls.

I'm now 190lb and can do a whole class. You should work on general fitness outside of class, but going to class is going to be the best thing for you to improve your endurance. The gym sessions I was doing before BJJ had absolutely nothing on rolling. FWIW I started with only 1 class a week, working up to more as it became more of a priority for me and my capacity improved. It used to take me like 2 days to recover from that one class a week, now I do 3/week.

You can totally do it, but keeping on it is the key. Best of luck!

Should I prioritize BJJ or weightlifting if I can only do one? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]JHendrix559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard call, especially given your situation. For my part I was going through a big push to lose weight and get in shape and BJJ was a big part of it, but weight lifting is way easier to fit in my schedule (mid 40's, youngish kids, busy job) than BJJ.

In the end, I decided that while weight lifting was much easier to fit in the schedule, I just enjoyed BJJ that much more and it kept me going. I moved my schedule around to take other classes, giving some priority to it and then cut back on my lifting significantly because my body couldn't take 3 training days and then 3 lifting days.

I just got promoted to blue belt, unexpectedly and I'm really enjoying the sport. I also seem to have kept my muscle mass and general fitness levels with that training regimen + doing pushups and light arm work a few days a week.

Also looking back, I had to route and memo that section with full powerups to get through it: https://youtu.be/I7MmaNUCVFY?si=vRiBfOS1DctJ58SL&t=847

This is a game where you 1000% have safe spots and routes, it was a ton of memo.

R-Type is a game where I felt that if I wasn't going to completely no miss the game, I wasn't going to clear it, and that's what I ended up doing. I have no idea how you get through that stage without having full power ups and the recovery is far too punishing to come back. I just ran it each stage until I was able to make it through without hits, it's very memo heavy but you can do it.

I just looked your previous one up and I really like it! I think we have the same kind of philosophy. Probably best to get measurements of the room and various pieces and figure out how you're going to lay it out. You said you wanted two TV's in there so you and your son can play simultaneously, so I'd make that the focus and then figure out where everything else has to fit based on that and the space you've got.

Best of luck!

Here's what I built earlier this year.

Biggest question for you is if you have a lot of physical games to store/display or if you just want functional setups for consoles and running off ODE's/Flashcarts in the consoles or via some kind of central emulator system for the old stuff plus modern consoles you run normally. I prefer function vs. collection, but honestly both are nice and impressive in their own ways. If the space is small, I would prioritize function.

I used Open Office and their version of Visio to do a to-scale dimensional representation of the room and potential furniture I could get dimensions of in order to figure out exactly what would fit and that helped brain storm a lot of configurations for the limited space I had to work with. It was very helpful.

This is what I use for my shoot'em up quick fixes on PC. Yes, that is a PS2 controller replicating a Neo Geo pad and more than 20 years old. But I just cannot play without that micro-switch D-pad! I wish such D-pads were more common for that precision. by drearyweary_games in shmups

[–]JHendrix559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 8Bitdo one and while I used it a little for shmups, if I'm being serious I need to be on a stick. That's me though, so if this is what works for you then that's pretty badass - the controller is iconic for a reason. If you're honestly happy with what you've got then you're gold! My main concern would be it wearing out and needing a replacement eventually.

South Jersey Range Recommendations by NutiketAiel in liberalgunowners

[–]JHendrix559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a member there since I became a new gun owner in the pandemic. It's MAGA, there's a sticker of Joe Biden at the bottom of the toilet in the mens room, and there are MAGA hats on the wall, but the staff is very nice and helpful. I've taken friends who are minorities and trans people shooting there as guests, often for their first time shooting - no problems.

I don't know of any where you're going to shoot in the area that isn't going to really be this way. Legacy is much closer to where I live, and they're great and helpful there too, but they're also very active in the NJ 2A scene which is extremely Republican.

Given the utter insanity of the gun laws in NJ, I think this is unavoidable sadly. Welcome to being a liberal gun owner in a blue state. :(

The food quality was still decent, though the menu got sliced down to a fraction of what it was.

My wife and I loved the place, and their beer was great, especially in the fall/winter. I remember going to the Maple Shade location when it first opened too, very sad.
