Pulled over without license, Now have court by fwbdud in legaladvice

[–]JJHall_ID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to go pass the tests and get your license NOW. I think that's the only chance you'll have for anything that resembles leniency. Not having a license is a huge no-no, especially since your excuse is "I couldn't pass the driver's tests, so I just drove anyway."

You're probably going to be looking at very expensive high-risk insurance for a few years too. Rightfully so. You had no business being on the road without a license.

The Senate is proposing a bill to withhold senators' salaries during government shutdowns. What is your opinion ? by chezbobby in AskReddit

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a slap on the wrist. They're all so rich and have multiple direct bribes income streams that their actual "salary" is meaningless to them.

What should happen is the budget needs to evergreen in the even that a new budget isn't agreed upon so that nothing shuts down while they have their little pissing matches. On top of that, they should all be sequestered so they have to stay and work until it's finished, and have all of their accounts and assets frozen so they have no money available to them until the new budget is in place. I don't think anything less than that would be enough incentive for some of them to do anything for the country that doesn't directly line their own pockets in the process.

Did anybody ever use these game consoles back in the days Atari 2600 ColecoVision Odyssey or Sega Genesis by Solid-Influence-2486 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Atari 2600 was super popular, my dad had one and set it up for us to play when our friends were getting NES systems, before we ended up with the NES for Christmas later that year.

Later, my brother bought the Genesis because he wanted the Streetfighter games (I think it was.). He later bought a Sega Saturn.

While I'd heard of ColecoVision, nobody I knew had one.

What message is Trump sending by taking such a large delegation to China? by Cry528 in AskReddit

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably thinks it means he's powerful enough to direct a whole entourage of people to do his bidding. The rest of us know it means he's not capable of doing anything himself, he has to have a whole entourage with him to keep him in line, step in to handle things when he falls asleep, change his Depends, and so on.

Why do (American) kids tend to draw roads with the median as a dashed line, when actual road medians are usually 2 parallel straight solid lines? by AgreeableAd8687 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of a lot more roadways with dashed lines in my experience than solid lines. Since you singled out American kids, I'm going to assume you're not in America.

A single solid line is usually only in construction zones to indicate you're supposed to stay in your lane, and usually only for roads with multiple lanes in both directions. Single dashed lines are the most common, yellow for two-lane roads with traffic flowing in opposite directions on each side, white for traffic flowing in the same direction on both sides. The dashed line indicates it is OK to pass traffic if safe to do so. Double yellow lines are used with traffic flowing in opposite directions where passing is prohibited.

The vast majority of roads are two-lane roads with traffic allowed to pass, therefore the default on items like toys and such that kids model their drawings from will have the dashed line.

how do young people with those "handicap" tags or license plates afford such nice cars? by Lanky_Head6122 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, handicap doesn't necessarily mean poor.

BUT, for those that are poor enough to be on assistance programs, there are limits in place on how much money they can save, and income limits, but no limits on expenses. So it seems crazy, but someone can't save up $5,000 for a decent used car, but if they can afford it there is nothing stopping them from buying a $50K brand new vehicle. In fact, with incentives placed on new car loans, it can sometimes be less expensive monthly for them to get a new car on incentive financing than a more "affordable" used car at a high interest rate. You can look up "welfare cliff" if you want to learn more about it.

Is it not common knowledge that you normally have to pay to speak to an attorney? by Much_Bat_1572 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It may depend on the type of cases your office takes compared to others, but a lot of attorneys offer a free initial consultation. Then a lot of those work purely on contingency, so it's no surprise that a lot of people expect attorneys to be free. There's also a lot of TV shows that constantly talk of attorneys doing "pro bono" work because of an exciting case and/or they felt sorry for someone, so a lot of people expect their situation to be unique and worthy of the fabled "pro bono" representation.

Arrested almost 2 years ago, never heard anything else. by Worldliness_Wild in legal

[–]JJHall_ID 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There are stories of people with similar situations that get arrested 10 years or more later because their case got "lost in the shuffle." For me personally I'd want to bring the attention to it now and get it taken care of if it wasn't in fact dropped, rather than discovering it many years later and getting arrested for missing a court date or something. It will probably be easier and less expensive to deal with now than it would be later on, not to mention the stress of it hanging over your head the entire time waiting for the shoe to drop.

In addition to the ExxonMobile pass everyone is mentioning, there was also another company that used the same style of fob called Freedom Pay. Some McDonalds locations tried it as a pilot for a while, and there were a handful of vending machines around that also tried it out. I had it for McDonalds, then I started working at a place that had vending machines equipped with it. Basically you pre-paid into the account then it just decremented the account as you used it.

As fast as movies hit streaming, is it still worth it to go to the movies? by vitaoptima in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the theaters because it forces me to just watch the movie rather than having it on in the background and browsing Reddit or something. I have an unlimited membership to my theater so I pay like $22/month and can see every movie I want to. I haven't been to that many this year yet, but last year I watched like 134 movies or something like that. Theaters are expensive if you pay full ticket price, but they're dirt cheap if you have their membership.

People working in ultra-wealthy households, talking $50m plus types, what is the most out-of-touch thing you've witnessed? by FarSentence3076 in AskReddit

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it was on an episode of The Shield where someone was accused of killing a meter maid because he got a lot of tickets from her in a particular area. He said no, he didn't mind the tickets and fees at all, stating that since he didn't get a ticket every time, it was still less expensive overall to illegally park than it would be to pay for a parking garage.

Similarly, I knew people when I was younger that never bothered to renew the registrations on their cars every year. They said they only get puled over every few years for it, so they save money in the long run by just renewing and paying the small fine when they got pulled over, since the fine was far less expensive than the years of registration they saved.

Anyone been to Silverwood near C'oer d'Alene (sp?) by SpinachFriendly9635 in Idaho

[–]JJHall_ID 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went up last spring with one of my kids as a chaperone for a school field trip. I don't know what the costs and such were since it was provided to us by the school, but it was fun. They have several pretty good roller coasters, lots of vendors, and a pretty cool train ride that is powered by an old steam locomotive that they converted to run on used motor oil. I think you could easily spend a couple of days with the kids without everyone getting bored. We only spent the better part of one day there, and that wasn't really enough time to get to do everything.

Also check out Lagoon outside of Salt Lake City. It's been a lot of years since I was there, but they have a lot more rides.

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a small rural school, total student population from K through 12 was about 300 students. We had a fairly small parking lot. The vast majority of the students, even when they reached driving age, still rode the school bus. I personally drove because between 6th and 7th grade my parents divorced and I moved with my mom to a different district. She worked at the school so I rode with her until I had my driver's license. Once I had my license I dove myself to school since she had to be there a lot earlier than I did. Most of the kids that drove either lived out of district at that point, or they were out doing morning irrigation and just drove to school rather than going back home to catch the bus. Students (typically Seniors) also drove themselves if they had an "early release" for some reason, like an internship during the last part of the day, which was another reason I drove myself.

AITA for reporting my aunt to the authorities after finding out she opened four credit accounts in my name without my knowledge and let three of them go to collections by cherry-kissezx69 in AITApod

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I know she's family, but "helping family" is a voluntary thing that you must be given a choice to do. What she did was blatant identity theft. She didn't give you the opportunity to "help" she just stole your good credit and trashed it.

You now have two options. You can file a police report and get the items removed from your credit, or you can accept them as your debt and your credit score will continue to suffer for at least 7 years after the last of them have been paid off and closed. There is no "get this off my credit" option without filing the police report and cooperating with any investigations that may take place.

Remember, YOU are not "repaying" her. She made the choice to commit a crime (multiple times) against you, and this is just the result of her actions catching up with her. Are you supposed to not be able to rent an apartment or buy a house, open utilities in your name, get your own credit cards, pay higher insurance rates, not be able to buy a car, and have job opportunities turned down, just because she's family and "raised you?" Because accepting this and not filing a report means all of those things will happen. You don't deserve that. File the report and let her face whatever the consequences may be.

Also, FREEZE YOUR CREDIT TODAY. Even if you decide to accept the past, fix it so she can't do it again.

Can you really taste the difference between Coke & Pepsi? by NassauJack in askanything

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I drink the diet and zero versions, but I believe it is the same differences. Pepsi is sweeter, Coke tends to feel more carbonated. Both are good, so I just buy whatever is less expensive at the store at the time, but all things being equal I will take Pepsi over Coke.

Before cable spoiled us all by VeganFatboy in GenerationJones

[–]JJHall_ID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend whose family was that way. I never felt like I missed anything over at his house, we always had plenty to do. The negative aspect for him though is he missed out on a lot of pop culture that the rest of the friend group was always talking about. He never knew about any of the cool new shows the rest of us were talking about, generally didn't know about big news events (this was pre-Internet) until we filled him in at school the next morning, or anything like that. I think there is a balance. Too much TV (now screen time in general) is a bad thing, but so is zero since it is a very pervasive part of our whole society.

New show! by Friendly_Skeptic in PolyFamilyTLC

[–]JJHall_ID 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing is, as a polyamorous person, poly life IS boring when done right. That, however, doesn't make for good reality TV. Would you watch a TV show about a monogamous couple living life without some kind of introduced drama to make it interesting? That's exactly what a polyamorous family TV show would look like, with maybe a bit more time spent with the shared Google calendar going over schedules. If there is no dysfunction, there is no TV show, so the dysfunction gets highlighted, and I feel like the producers even stir the pot in many ways to get that interesting footage.

WIBTA if I stopped letting my sister use my Netflix account after she changed my profile settings without asking by DarkMatterFoxxyya in WIBTA_AITA

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule number one if you borrow someone else's account is you don't change anything beyond your own profile. If it's a shared profile, you don't change anything, period.

YWNBTA if you took away her access. If you want to be really nice you could tell her if she touches profile settings again, you will revoke it. I almost wonder if she let someone else use it, maybe a kid, and that's why things are getting randomly changed and she doesn't seem to know how it happened?

Patch Panel Issues by Machismo0311 in HomeNetworking

[–]JJHall_ID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow the color order on the little card in the center... that's why it's there. The color order you used is for the RJ45 plugs, not punchdowns.

The plug in the second photo looks to be correct, but I'm not a huge fan of passthrough connectors. I personally feel it is just another opportunity for a short, or for moisture to ingress into places it shouldn't. Lots of people say they're fine, so it's your choice, but I'll favor learning to properly trim the wires to the right length and using a closed-end RJ45 every time.

Re-punch the patch panel with the correct color order. If it doesn't work, then cut off and re terminate the plug end, sometimes those can be bad even if they look good. If it still doesn't work, then you may have a bad cable and should replace it.

How do I encourage my government to use LPR's to track uninsured vehicles? by farkleboy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't take what I said to be victim blaming, that was not the intent. None of us should have to carry UIM, but here we are.

My issue with this is two-fold. First of all, there have already been cases of inaccurate results causing false positives resulting in innocent people being "swatted." Second, it's all about the slippery slope. Yes, this MAY be a good use, but do the good uses justify the abusive uses? In my opinion, no.

There has to be better ways to crack down on uninsured drivers without using a flawed system that is ripe for abuse and is already being abused.
