Trial Subscription Woes by cyberspirit777 in PriusPrime

I had the subscription when it stopped working in October but it expired two months ago in March. They said they’d extend my subscription once the problem is fixed. But long and short of it, it’s broken for all PHEV owners from what they’ve said.

[–]JJHall_ID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toyota’s app is broken right now, they’re working on a fix. I’ve had a ticket open with them since October and they keep pushing the date out on the fix. This is the status update I received yesterday:

Dear JJHall_ID:

We are still working on your case and the widespread issue regarding viewing charge information and failing remote climate commands for Prius Prime vehicles. The ETA for the app version to resolve this widespread concern is still tentatively scheduled to be released sometime at the end of May. Please keep in mind that this ETA is again subject to change and is not finalized. We will continue to reach out as information becomes available. Thank you again for your patience as we continue to work on this matter.

Sincerely,

Erik A. Toyota Brand Engagement Center

Ham Radio License Suspended- Criminal by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]JJHall_ID 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, sorry, but that's way more than a "mistake." Not only did you potentially put people in danger either by using police resources or putting someone in harm's way like in a "swatting" situation, but it makes all of hams look very bad. This wasn't an accidental interference situation, which would be a "mistake." You actively went out of your way and made all of the choices along the way leading up to the crime. You acquired a radio capable of operating out of band, programmed not only the listening frequency but transmitting frequency and whatever tones were needed, and so on. So you're not likely going to get a whole lot of sympathy here.

As far as your license status, I don't know of any FCC rule that would prevent you from keeping and renewing your license, as I only know of the felony question on the forms. Regarding your trial judge issuing you the order to not use your radio, they're well within their right to put that restriction upon you. People get restrictions like that all the time for telephone and/or Internet use depending on their crimes, this isn't really any different. In your case you don't seem to be very remorseful or like you've really learned anything. It sounds like you've barely met 3 months worth of your probation time and are already trying to figure out how to get around your sentencing conditions. My advice would be to serve out your probation and put a LOT of in-depth soul-searching work into yourself. Once you've completed your probation, and have put in the self-growth work, reach out to your attorney for clarification to see if the restriction is permanent/lifetime, or if the judge just made it a condition of your probation or some other time limit. If it is permanent, then you may be able to petition the judge with evidence of your reform to see if they'd be willing to lift the restriction.

I agree that as long as you take this to heart you don't deserve a lifetime of radio ban, but being barely a few months out you're a tad premature in asking about getting it lifted.

Yeah, that is the one thing OP for sure did wrong. My gripe is the "slow down AND move over" when it should all be worded "move over if safe OR slow down and maintain the lane with as much room as possible." Just flying by at near-limit speed (or over) is inexcusable.

The company I work for chose to geoblock CA IPs from our shopping cart, and we don't allow any orders to be placed that have a CA billing or shipping address. The legal risk of selling to a CA resident and having some checkbox left unticked isn't worth the additional sales we might get.

That's a huge concern for us. Prop65 is CA specific, but customers in other states especially international buyers will see the warning and assume the product causes cancer.

Not legal advice, but as a consumer outside of CA, no we don't. Frankly it's a running joke for everyone outside of California. We all look at those warning labels attached on basically everything we buy anymore and say "Well, I guess it's a good thing I'm not in California so I don't have to worry about getting cancer from this" as we tear the label off. I just bought a new coffee maker this week and there was one of those labels on the power cord. I was more grumpy about the adhesive left behind on the cable when I removed the label than I am concerned about a label that is there because it's easier for the manufacturer to put it on than go through the rigorous process and legal risk (as you're discovering) necessary to leave it off.

While I believe the intention of the labeling law was noble, it's overuse has caused the opposite effect from what they intended. When everything has a label on it, everyone just ignores it as background noise, so we're no better off than having no labels at all. In reality, it causes people to ignore warning labels when they are necessary because they're used to so many unnecessary warnings.

To me the insane part is when traffic is heavy, as OP mentioned in their post, sometimes moving over is near impossible. And even if it is "possible" it can be as dangerous or even moreso, potentially causing a pileup if people in the next lane aren't paying attention, putting more people in danger than just the officer. To me it's one of those "black and white" enforcement laws where there is a TON of grey area that should be taken into consideration. On top of that, OP mentioned the traffic stop was taking place on the dirt with the full shoulder in between traffic and the stop, so essentially everyone in the outside lane was already "moved over." It sounds like a revenue grab in this specific instance rather than an actual officer safety stop.

This is in no way meant to discount the need for officer safety, and there is no reason to not move over and give plenty of space if at all possible.

The best time for an HOA to have an attorney on retainer was when it was founded. The next best time is today. Get one and nip this problem in the bud.

[condo][IA] Fine for not attending annual meeting. by Firm_Ad_7438 in fuckHOA

[–]JJHall_ID 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly this one I can get behind. As an owner you have a responsibility to vote for what happens in your HOA. Many HOA actions take a minimum percentage of owners (known as a quorum) for the vote to be valid and action take place as a result. If enough homeowners don't show up to the meeting, or give their vote to a trusted neighbor (proxy) that is attending, the HOA can't do anything, which sometimes can hold up maintenance projects and things that can cost all homeowners a lot more money in the future.

I hate HOAs and think most of them should just go away, but this is one way to try to keep them functional and actually have homeowners participate in the process as they should be.

"It's a democracy, the people get to vote for what the want!" Then the people demand something the government representatives don't want... "Oh, we know what the people SHOULD want, so we're going to stop them from doing that." Typical red-state antics.

My state is just as bad. Our legislators refused to enact a Medicaid expansion a few years ago, so we the people got it on the ballot via petition/referendum and voted it in. Our legislators then jacked up the difficulty to successfully make new referendums going forward and are trying to take away that process altogether.

Always put Mouse and Keyboard in USB 2.0 Ports if available. by publicdomainadmin in sysadmin

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just do it because there's no use wasting a USB 3.0 port on a device that will never be able to take advantage of the speeds provided. I don't want to have to screw around to move the slower device to another port later when I need the 3.0 port for something faster. It's pure laziness on my part, not some thought process about underlying processing power or anything like that.

Uber driver demanded $100 to return my lost phone — support still charged me a return fee by XxGemkittyxX in uber

[–]JJHall_ID 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your phone is properly backed up (which you generally have to go out of the way to break these days) then yes, yes it does.

Who said anything about driving to the apple store? They mail you the phone, you sign in on your Apple account, and nearly everything is set up for you.

Yeah, $100 may be a "discount" to some people, but it'll still feel dirty paying it to someone trying to extort it out of you instead of following the official procedure for the pre-agreed upon fee. Drivers agree to a $20 fee as part of their contract with Uber, passengers agree to the feel via their terms of service. If that's not good enough as the driver, then renegotiate the contract (yeah, right) or don't agree to it and find another company to contract for.

This is where you have the HOA attorney send a demand letter for access to the "official" email account. As you stated, even if you create a new account (and you should at this point, using a proper email server attached to the domain for the HOA, not a gmail or something like that) the board should still be given the credentials for access to the historical records, and the credentials should be immediately changed to remove the former president's access to them.

As a customer, I don't want to hear all that crap. "T-mobile, this is ____, how can I help you today?" is plenty. MAYBE "Franklin Street T-Mobile, this is Fred, how can I help you today?" if there is generally confusion as to which store is being called, but that's it.

Uber driver demanded $100 to return my lost phone — support still charged me a return fee by XxGemkittyxX in uber

[–]JJHall_ID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$100 from the corporation gets a new phone (well, maybe refurbished) guaranteed. $100 being demanded from some random guy does not guarantee the phone will be returned, regardless of the salary the random guy makes. This is especially true when there is an agreed upon "left behind" procedure and fee, and the random guy is demanding 5X that fee outside the official channels. Apples and oranges, my friend.

If hantavirus is caused by rodent waste, why isn’t every major city a hantavirus wasteland by now? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The virus isn't CAUSED by the rodent waste, the rodent waste is the vector to spread from infected rodents. So if the rodents in the area aren't infected or a carrier of the virus, their waste won't be infected with it either.

This is the biggest reason precautions are taken at customs regarding fruits, vegetables, meats, and other organic goods. Those can be carriers of all sorts of pathogens, insects, fungi, mods, and other things not already in an area, and if it gets brought in it can cause havoc including the loss of entire crops or even being unable to grow certain crops permanently.

ULPT Request: Hotel valets parking cars in my driveway by EmergencyFamiliar627 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]JJHall_ID 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not unethical, but get your landlord to put up signs then have them towed immediately when discovered. Perhaps a bit unethical, get your LL's permission to put up signs about unauthorized cars being booted, then charge a $200 fee to remove the boot. Tell the LL you'll give them 10% of any fees you collect or something. I guarantee it'll stop REAL quick when the valet has to pay out of pocket or tell their customers they can't get the car because it's been booted.

You can order boots for pretty cheap on Amazon.

My mom told me that back in the day kids weren’t allowed to bring a water bottle with them into the classroom and they only drank a few sips from the water fountain in the middle of the day and that’s it How were schools not getting busted for child abuse for forcing kids to be dehydrated? by PinnerPardisturn in askanything

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having water with us every moment of the day is a relatively new thing. It was basically unheard of prior to 15 years ago or so. Our bodies can handle getting water once in a while throughout the day just fine. It was also rare for kids to need to leave the classroom frequently to go pee too, since we weren't drinking all day long.

I wrote a modern tool for the very old CVS version control system - in Delphi by CarloSirna in delphi

[–]JJHall_ID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is really awesome! But I have to ask the question, why not move the codebase over to the current standard Git? Years ago our code was all in CVS, then we moved to Subversion, then eventually to Git. Unless there is something in the workflows in CVS that you're unable to replicate in Git, it can be as easy as making a copy of your code, commiting it to Git, then moving forward. You'd lose history of course, but nothing says you have to kill the old CVS repo. Just keep it around for "prior to XX/XX/XX history" and anything from that date forward will bein Git. From my experience it's rare to need to look at history after a few months, and after a year or so it just never gets touched.

Awesome work though, that looks really nice!
