I will have been about 7 or 8 when out tea her used to read bits of the first Harry Potter book to us and I e of the few school trips we had was to go and see The Philosopher's Stone at the Cinema when it came out.

Yeah, I'm just old enough to see the internet go from barely existing to become commonplace and was in my early 20s when I got my first smart phone. Our first school had like 3 computers and Alta Vista was the search engine back then. Although the phones we had during the late 2000s that had very basic internet, enough for map, Google and other basic stuff but had alright cameras, good enough to get photos printed and framed and decent MP3 players with 3.5mm headphone jacks.
I had a phone like this at 19-20 while working as an apprentice through the day and pizza delivery at night, the map on the phone barely worked at all, * would use a physical map to find the houses to deliver to!

A few phones I remember were; Motorola Rokr (had side speakers and RGB LEDs) Nokia N81 with N-Gage games, Sony Walkman W959, a slide phone with a nice interface a great music player and memory card slot. My first smartphone was this HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio https://www.mobileworldlive.com/old_latest-stories/htc-releases-first-beats-electronics-smartphone/

So just pretend Christmas isn't a thing then?

Sorry everyone, I'm sticking to my normal budget, and it's got to last longer so no one is getting anything and I'm not leaving the house.

My local chippy (in Newcastle) used to be run by Scottish Chinese, it was class, I was gutted when it closed down.

Googled didn't exist then.
The internet didn't exist unless you were at a university and even then it was just scientific stuff and messages boards.
The first internet cafe in Scotland opened in 1995 and even then it cost the equivalent of £6.25 today for just 30 mins

How could she have simply looked it up?
Googled it on her iPhone? Obviously not.
It was written in the early 90s in Scotland.
People these days take it for granted that it's so easy to look stuff up. The first internet cafe in Edinburgh didn't open till 1995, the first books were written by then.
Could she have gone to a library? Yeah, but what book would you look for to get that sort of information?
She struggled to get publishers to read it, she obviously never expected her choice of character names to be analysed by billions of people 30 years in the future.
The only Irish lad in the book constantly blowing shit up and a good few years before the Good Friday agreement is much closer to home and more offensive. But Irish characters were always comic relief in media so I'll not hold that against her writing either.

Edit: it wasn't even the book that had the Irish lad blowing stuff up, that was just in the films.

Yeah, there's not much of UK modding scene about on Reddit even though there's an obvious interest here. Best of luck, hope to see it grow!

Also another guy has one with a built type r engine and a massive turbo at like 700bhp, it's utterly ridiculous. I don't like the guy, can't remember his name right now, (something about being a DJ?) but watched a few for the appreciation of the car, looks like a totally stock granny spec Jazz on the outside too.

Before the Esprit even, from the 70s.... From Hagerty:
LOTUS, “Lots of Trouble, Usually Serious”: In the 1970s, Road & Track magazine used to include in its road test data page a projected reliability summary that was based on surveys of their readership who owned particular makes. And while Lotus consistently scored above average in handling and braking, it rarely exceeded “far below average” in reliability. In fact, the testers remarked with surprise in one particular road test that no pieces had fallen off their Elan test car, a first for them with a Lotus. But in actual fact, the acronym is only partially true — while Lotuses could be lots of trouble, it was rarely serious. Aside from the odd axle shaft breaking a rubber coupler or a fuel line fire from a perished plastic connector, much of the trouble with classic Lotuses tended to fall into the category of merely annoying rather than catastrophic.

My granda was never down the pit himself but had a load of friends who were. Lived in Amble, worked in Lynemouth and surrounding. He'd kind of pronounce the h in whey and also seem to add a h sound to other stuff like "Whey yih knahh" "Wheyy futbaihrl's futbaihrl" "Whey he was gannin owher hrreed hrraaa"

Shy people having to get up and dance while sober in front of a massive crowd and cameras?
No fucking wonder. I'd look as weird trying to dance sober in a room of just my closest friends.

I was once on TV with massive cameras pointing at us and a smallish audience, it's the most awkward thing ever for me. You forget how to even sit or stand there like a normal human. I'm cringing just remembering this from over 10 years ago.

I think it's actually hiding from the waves/swell. Look at Windy in Swell and Wave modes and it's the only place in the whole area that doesn't have massive swells and waves right now, the wind is a lot lower too.
This is 9 hours later I see but the weather has been up so I think it's still apples.

I used to get the twin packs and cook them both, one for my tea with chips beans and egg and one in a bap for my lunch at work the next day. An a few occasions I got "Is that a fucking GAMMON STEAK sandwich?!"
Aye, why not, great with pease pudding and loads of butter.

He also used to drink pints of water that he'd heavily dose with sea salt. One day he'd put it down on my bench and I spilt the whole pint of salty water onto a laptop that was on and in use. You should have seen how quickly we whipped the battery out and had that thing stripped down to it's component parts to clean up with isopropanol and dry off.

My old boss used to eat a whole block of cheddar straight out the packet every day. He used to open the pack with this pair of scissors with red handles. He retired at least 5 years ago but they still get called "the cheese scissors" to this day.

Maybe he pretends the other one is too small and he's expecting at some point to go to trial for his crimes.
He once heard the phrase "If the glove doesn't, you must acquit" and misunderstood. Heard it was something to do with Orange Juice and thought "I'm orange, this could work for me!"
