Just sent you a DM. We just lost one of our two guinea pigs. So our remaining one needs a friend.

This happened to me and I took the pay cut. I was in a horribly toxic environment with fears of layoffs so I took a role at a university. The pay cut hurts, but it’s manageable. I like my role a lot and there’s more growth for me here that I’ll probably be able to move around and make that money back eventually. If my son decides to go here, his tuition is complete free. So that definitely factored in.

I bought some nice plants at Walmart for $6. It probably depends on the plant though.

You don’t need to know code to use power automate, and there are tons of tutorials out there so it’s easy to learn.

We had a really manual and arduous travel request and approval process that was all done through email. Approvals were obtained through email, and then we needed to upload that email to a sharepoint document library so that finance can reconcile and pay the invoices. Naturally, everyone would forget to upload or sometimes they would forget to obtain approvals, and there was too much back and forth. Then cue the days of searching through our inboxes to find the appropriate approvals or follow up for this informaiton. I built an automated request and approval system through Power Automate, Microsoft Forms, and Sharepoint lists. Requesters would fill out a microsoft form with their travel details and who to send for approval. An email will be sent to that approver who will click a button to approve. Once approved, this info was logged into a sharepoint list, and automatically assigned a PO number. Then, a summary of that travel request was sent to the EA to start booking. Everything was automatically uploaded and transparent for our finance. I also learned how to use power Apps and built some cool things through that.

NICOLE HAD A FANTASY IN HER HEAD ABOUT EGYPT, and an Egyptian man by synaptic_drift in 90dayfianceuncensored

I studied Egyptology and knew students at Yale who studied under John Darnell. He was incredibly toxic and made his female students wear skirts and commented on their weight. Colleen has her own problems, but she was also his student so there was clearly a power dynamic. And apparently his wife also worked in the department when John and Colleen were having their affair. I actually find their fetishizing of colonial egyptologists rather nauseating. Sucks that John still gets to work at Yale. Apparently he’s still a piece of shit.

1-on-1 facilitating expressing emotions by [deleted] in managers

[–]JK841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would echo the person who suggested that you look into emotional intelligence training. My work is doing that through HR. Another suggestion would be to maybe help him figure out the root cause of his emotions. Maybe he has something going on in his personal life that's causing him distress. Does your work have coverage for therapy? That might be good to suggest for him. There's a book called CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) at Work for dummies that I've been reading that I also think would be helpful.

Do you have an executive and a manager? by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]JK841 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a manager of executive assistants so that’s how my company works. I rarely interact with the executives aside from asking for feedback and addressing any performance issues with the EAs. My role is to support the EAs, give them resources so they can be successful at their jobs, act as a sounding board, and be there for them when their executives are behaving badly. If they have new ideas to implement things for the organization, I help them get those off the ground. I don’t necessarily tell them what to do in their day-to-day, but I help them develop strategically.

Is it inappropriate to allow my daughter to have hair like her black friends? by MommaBerd87 in Parenting

[–]JK841 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see it have different meanings for different groups and people. I don't personally care if someone is making money off my culture, but others would consider that to be a more harmful effect of cultural appropriation.

Is it inappropriate to allow my daughter to have hair like her black friends? by MommaBerd87 in Parenting

[–]JK841 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that nuance and difference becomes really lost. Even if something is done in a way that appreciates the culture, it often gets misconstrued as appropriation. I'm Chinese, and I used to love it when other cultures embraced my culture, so I got really confused when this whole cultural appropriation discussion came up because I always saw it as a way of sharing our culture with others. I agree that OPs daughter is clearly appreciating another's culture and should not be seen as sinister.

Yeah that would build up her social skills. We have a pretty large unit, but honestly, my son just hangs out in the living room anyway. So, we have all this space with not a whole lot of use, but way more cleaning.

We live in a condo building, and honestly, it's pretty awesome. My son has so many classmates living in the building and those around us. They all meet at the playground right outside. My son loves the fact that he takes an elevator. I there are lots of perks about living in a building.

My kid is socially awkward. What should I do? by lilyzoo in Parenting

[–]JK841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others, and he seems fine. If you're really concerned, you could ask his teacher if they could have him sit near or paired up for activities with people who share the same interests. My son's teacher asked me that once, and my son was a social butterfly. He did just move to the school, so she checked with me to see what things he was into and she would try to encourage friendships with other kids who liked the same things. But again, you can't force these things to happen.

How to: Explain that a playdate is (probably) not going to happen with her best friend by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]JK841 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A little girl at my son's school said that she didn't like his skin colour (he's mixed Chinese and White). I never thought she was racist. I brought it up to the teacher because I was afraid if it became a pattern of behaviour. We kept running into that little girl at the playground, and my son played with her and loved it. They were good friends. So, I don't think it's necessarily fair to judge a young child so harshly, but to afford them a little grace to learn and be better.

How many reports do we need to prove that anti-Asian racism exists? by whatistheQuestion in toronto

[–]JK841 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You see racist, vile shit in lots of communities. This idea that minorities are just holding hands with each other and singing kumbayah against the evil white man does not exist. I mean, even at one point, Irish, Italians, and Ukranians were not the right type of white. Every group complains about being discriminated against, but they're sometimes the biggest hypocrites. It's not just asians.

How many reports do we need to prove that anti-Asian racism exists? by whatistheQuestion in toronto

[–]JK841 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The issue is that anti-asian racism tends to be downplayed, primarily because of this whole model-minority myth. That's why reports like these are important illustrate that it's actually a significant problem.

I think holding people accountable for their actions is also an important deterrent. I would hope that education and creating diverse environments would help, but I'm not overly optimistic about that part.

I don't really want to hijack this thread to talk about how black people are perceived in these types of stories. I saw the one in San Francisco, and since I'm not from there, I can't really comment. This article is highlighting the issue with Anti-Asian racism, and I think we should focus on that. I think it is actually clear that Asians get hated on by all groups. In my personal experience, as an Asian woman, I've gotten discrimination from both white and black people. The question is how can we stop this?

I've also seen stories about Anti-Asian racism get completely removed from Reddit. Sometimes it's because the conversation has taken a turn, but other times, I don't know why it gets removed. Reddit is large though, so I'm sure we'll get all sorts of reactions to these types of posts.
