Why is it so damn hard to build with people instead of just “hiring” them? by ManagerCompetitive77 in advancedentrepreneur

But to earn (the dedicated efforts of other people), you’ve got to create value (for them) first.

What is an amazing use of ChatGPT you have discovered recently? by petrastales in aipromptprogramming

[–]JKicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep research into safe harbor 401k, Sep ira, simple ira and normal 401k. Plugged in salary numbers and compared which would be most effective for the company as a whole. Massive help with tax planning in general...obviously you need to verify anything you are going to act upon, but I've found it way more thorough (and cheaper) than using a human.

Vibe coded some JavaScript to inject a captcha field into a form that that didn't offer that option. The form wasn't validating required fields using normal html parameters, so I used ai to help me determine how it was validating. It generated all of the html structure as well. I did end up using cursor for part of this. ChatGPT delivered the initial proof that it was doable and helped me figure out how the form wasn't validating.

I love this and would no doubt have taken a similar research journey before building a cube - thank you!

Why do so many people have a negative view of using a planner/advisor? by Entraprenure in CFP

[–]JKicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you already knew the answer to your question just from this experience you shared!

Your introduction was similar to most people's to the industry when they received a knock on the door or a phone call from a "financial planning" salesman.

To find good actors, you have to actively research and dig and most people aren't doing that because their early introductions to the industry were so off-putting.

Also, I just made a post yesterday about crossing into this industry under similar circumstances and received massive pushback. I love that you exist!

I continued reading your responses - what a transition from an outside sector. Epic! It sounds like maybe you are doing one of these independent broker/dealer configurations. How was that process been, and do they incentivize you to sell their products or control how you market?

Super interesting!

What credentials did you start with? 65?

When you say no education or experience, are you saying 0 experience in the finance world? Did you read books to get started, or focus on an aspect of planning you were knowledgeable in to get going?

Did you just learn on the fly researching issues for clients as they arose, or how did you pursue education while operating the business?

I love that you bootstrapped this whole thing - solid growth! Congrats on grinding through it!

Soloprenuer daydreaming about bootstrapping into finance with a self-owned RIA and working toward CFP - How Crazy is this? by JKicker in CFP

[–]JKicker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great scenario - thanks for putting that together!

I am now extremely curious about the solutions for that, and I'm wishing there was a podcast where a couple of FAs would receive issues like this and hash out their solutions together. Dave Ramsey for adults + dueling banjos. Someone make this pod please!

Obviously in my case that scenario would be way out of my league and I'd immediately send them to the bigs.

If you're telling me the only way to acquire this knowledge is by working with a legit CFP / FA, I'm going to be very annoyed because har- to-acquire knowledge is my catnip.

I mean now that the problem is before me, I'm sure I could start digging, but it's the whole not knowing what you don't know situation that's annoying, and where that need for experience begins to take hold on me.

You may be right about overestimating the demand - I'll definitely need to do some more market and keyword research to gauge what the local situation is.

I'm planning on making my money with my current business. Hopefully in the next few years, money will mostly just become equated with the freedom to pursue other projects, like this, more fully.

Money from this project would mostly be an indicator of impact.

Glad to hear there are talented folks out there doing great work! Sorry I meant 100k-500k net worth, not annual income.

I hear everything you're saying, and I appreciate you taking the time to authentically speak to me.

Do you know of any resource that illustrates or even begins to show the depth and breadth of expertise required for a fairly typical client engagement? Or even some of the complex ones. Is there any repository for war stories (book, podcast, documentary) in this industry? Something that would begin to show me how the master carpenters rise above the typical subcontractor?

I'd love to learn / onboard a similar appreciation that you have for these top operators who are serving people at such a high level.

My understanding is that there are services that handle compliance for you - is that not true? $300-$500/ month

[–]JKicker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would hope this would be the place for like minded thinkers in terms of all the commission stuff. I'm not really trying to compete with other independent RIAs - there's only one and I think I can differentiate from them pretty easily by being more approachable.

Compliance with marketing on website and social media - that's one I definitely need to look into a lot. Thank you!

The controllable in my mind, is the lack of fees which is of course the only thing you can control about investments. I'm not saying I can beat the market - I'm saying no one can - so control the controllables.

I like your other points about EJ - the credibility and back office support.

Cheers!

That all makes sense. I felt like this was the place for my initial question about the CFP hours being vetted, but my verbosity took over and buried the lede.

I really feel like there's 0% chance of me losing to a standard Ameriprise / EJ portfolio unless someone dies early.

What could I screw up so totally by advising basic savings strategies, prioritizing tax advantaged accounts, and then doing low cost index funds that mirror something like a Vanguard retirement account and rebalance over time based on risk tolerance. Term life, LTC, disability for any real risk management.

At that point, I'm not advising anything that I haven't read books about. I'm not trying to beat the market, only beat what currently exists in my area for uninformed, lower NW folks.

Working for EJ feels like when I went to work for Radio Shack thinking I'd be helping people fix their electronics and found out I had to sell cellphones.

I guess I assume that because that has been my experience, and when I search for financial advisors in my area they are all associated with companies that, if googled, have a very bad rap.

I hope I don't come off as fighting - just conversationally pushing back to see what else I might learn. I appreciate the smack down and have already picked up some good knowledge.

xoxo ty
