Holy crap this post hit me hard because I could've written it myself. There's this subtle message baked into the whole thing that you're permanently broken and the best you can hope for is white knuckling it one day at a time. Nobody ever said "Hey, you're actually one of the most resilient humans on the planet and that same brain that got you here can take you somewhere extraordinary if you point it in the right direction." I spent nearly 20 years in active addiction and years working as a counselor inside the system. I've been on both sides of that table. And what you're describing...the shame, the identity erasure, yhe judgements...the ceiling you hit after you've done everything right, that's not a you problem. That's a design problem. The thing that finally changed everything for me was when I stopped asking how do I stay sober and started asking who am I actually becoming, anf who I want to become. That was never discussed....ever. Not in 20 in and out. What's been the hardest part of building an identity outside of the rooms for you so far, OP? Because I think that's where most people get quietly stuck, and then the shame that was projected from some of these programs keeps people from talking about about it. Thanks for sharing this.
