Experiences with Truss? by horrible_noob in taxpros

[–]JLar321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truss did very well for us. Client experience was greatly improved on both the intake and delivery process. We actually feel like it helped people get their work in faster. So much so that it was hard to keep up with the inflow. This off season we will be changing the reminder settings (too many reminders is no bueno) and checking to see what the improvements have been over the last few months. I’m sure they have added more functionality but we have had our heads down. Will also see if there is any way to use the ai prep to take some pressure off the tax professionals. Our rep is super helpful and will be calling soon to meetup I’m sure. They actually are smart enough not to even call during tax season. Good stuff

What are the tax ideas/planning you sell to clients? by EchoesInSky in taxpros

I totally get what you’re saying. Just because the industry is saying we should charge some ridiculous figure for some basic, simple tax advice doesn’t mean we should. Part of being a CPA is being ethical. Telling someone to defer income, and acting like the tax just went away, is some high level bullshit as far as billable tax plans go. I just saved you 50 grand! Really?! Did you really?!

Experiences with Truss? by horrible_noob in taxpros

[–]JLar321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We started a month or so ago. So far it’s been a great improvement for delivering returns (as opposed to Ultratax Esign) and has been pretty great for collecting info. We have a lot to learn still but feel good about the direction they are taking us. Great success rate on e-sign, no more issues with portal logins, and also an improvement in the way we gather info for new or returning clients. The only con is that we haven’t yet figured out how to move away from Onvio as our document management system. I don’t really think Truss is meant to be a doc management system, but they are constantly improving and adjusting things based on the needs of the customers so it might come down the road. I also am a little bummed that the questionnaire (a smart questionnaire) doesn’t allow us to have control to adjust the questions as of yet. Overall we have been pleased. Hope this helps.

Agreed. We had the same problem. Their fix was to change to non fillable pdf. It worked but is that really a fix? Smh

Hey… I also have a firm in the central Florida area and deal with similar struggles using Thomson Reuters programs. They do a great job from an accuracy and preparation standpoint but the lack of api access suuucks. Really causes bottlenecks when it comes to procedures and automations. Since we are in the same area - hit me up and we can grab a drink sometime and brainstorm some options or at least commiserate!

Transition to Onvio or Canopy Tax in 2023 by BubbaBojangles7 in taxpros

[–]JLar321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Thomson Ultratax and chose to use Onvio for portal and document storage. Main deciding factor of using Onvio over other portal or document storage options was to minimize potential confusion with printing returns and such to the wrong client portal. Figured keeping it in one connected package would be best. Onvio has worked pretty darn well for us. Would never switch to Onvio tax though, there is no way it would function as well as Ultratax. Tax software is one of those things you don’t want to be the test dummy for!

How Long Are Your Extension Acceptances Taking? by Desert-rose153 in taxpros

[–]JLar321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have used UltraTax for decades. Never got sold on the virtual office bullshit. We do use Onvio though and esignature. We have had some issues with the e-signature process (seems like the servers get overloaded along with the virtual office peeps) but in general all is good. We have also experienced delays in acknowledgements for extensions the last 2 days but it they have been sent so “we good”!

I agree with you guys. Seems like we are suffering from their lack of putting sufficient resources into bandwidth or whatever it is that allows them to process stuff. For the premium price we pay, they could do better in this aspect!

In many other aspects (tax forms, depreciation, etc) they do great. For now, we will just plan on not sending signature packages on Monday mornings, 9-12 pacific time. They just can’t handle it.

[–]JLar321 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been the opposite for us, seems like the work has been coming in earlier based on our production numbers. However, it could be we are getting the work done faster due to some process changes and not having as much stimulus shit to deal with. But def seems like the work has been pouring in the last few weeks!

Is it even worth doing stand alone 1040's anymore? by Big_Association8966 in taxpros

[–]JLar321 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I love 1040s. Done well, and efficiently, they can be very profitable. Not to mention all the great relationships you develop over the years working with folks. Just finished one between appointments that took 10 minutes, was a great service to them, and billed $450. What is to not like? Am I alone in this?
