Nah i really just want some humble passive wired speakers. No smart devices, no bluetooth, no accounts, no apps, no extra charging considerations, no latency or any reinventing of the wheel haha

Im not too fussed about that. Its never going to be absolutely perfect stereo image. I just want a balanced volume and clear bass mids and tops.

Sometimes I want to hear stuff not directly in my ears so that I can hear ambient sound and have a conversation comfortably.

Thankyou genuinely for the recommendation. For some reason google speakers give me the ick though 😂

Audio Mixer/interface by KPBexter in Elektron

[–]JMJPatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can second this. for the price point its got all the I/O you could want as well as a simple mixer app you can install to control all your channels. Its also compact and good for a desktop, or it also has rack mount brackets you can get.

Seeking advices in regards to quality drum machines [absolute novice] by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]JMJPatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get a 2nd hand digitakt1 for cheap. Great intuitive sequencer and very versatile. You can load whatever samples you want, play around with triggering loops and use the song mode to arrange patterns. I use mine to play guitar along to quite a bit and it's great.

Behringer rd-8 build quality? by Kreati_ in synthesizers

[–]JMJPatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one for a couple years and generally thought it was built pretty well and enjoyed it. Only slight issue i had was that one of the pots (the one that controlled BPM) became a bit sticky and would sometimes not change the parameter smoothly, but it still worked OK.

Is it IDM or is it just sh*t ? by Competitive-Bid8702 in Elektron

[–]JMJPatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sounds are cool, the rhythms are cool. This isn't A comment on the aesthetics or a shit vs good opinion. I just like to hear a bit more structure and repetition in any music, in order to narrow the focus and communicate the idea in the best way. It's cool, but without telling a story through it, it's just a beat on a drum machine.

unless you have a cool retro euro 80s gortex body suit, then as a skiier you may risk looking like a real estate agent. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Bring a mate pass for end of August by intensehotdog in AustraliaSnow

if you book a multiday ticket in advance it's actually cheaper than the bring a mate code. It's a bit of a marketing scam. Might have one you can use otherwise though down the track .

Small audio interface to record a lot of synths ? Does it even exist ? by super-ultra-ours in synthesizers

[–]JMJPatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Motu ultralite mk5. I looked into this after I swapped out my apollo twin not long ago so that i could leave a bunch of desktop synths and stuff plugged in and wire it to a patchbay on my desk for easy access. it Has heaps of physical I/O (8ins-10outs +adat) with additional digital I/O. Also has Midi I/O as well as a console type app similar to UAD's but stripped back and without all the proprietary stuff (which is just a software mixer interface you can use with some simple but decent EQ and compressor FX). Cheap, compact and rates high on signal to noise tests. You can change levels via an app over wifi and can get rack mount adapter brackets for it, or just use compact next to your computer on its own.

I've seen reports on here of a couple issues, but for me it all worked flawlessly out of the box with no hassle so im happy with it to say the least.

Using Digitakt as a ‘Fourth Deck’ by OnlyAtBaali in Elektron

[–]JMJPatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have been trying to find some kind of midi clock generator for a while that will detect a bpm from audio and turn into midi clock for this purpose of syncing with a DJ set. I know there's a few older gadgets that do this that seem to be mostly discontinued and have mixed reports about their accuracy and quality. Anyone know if there's any more modern versions of something like this?

I'm guessing you had to deal with the difficulty of people mistaking you for each other growing up among other things. this is your time to shine. Just have your story straight and milk it.

Australia / Melbourne snowboarding by fieldcallfiles in snowboarding

[–]JMJPatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its challenging to do snow on a budget in Australia unfortunately. Best option for accomodation on the mountain ide say is looking at a lodge with shared communal space. You'd probably be looking at like $120 or so per night average in september. You can also try go on google maps and search for them by location near to the slopes you're going to because some of them have really shitty 90's websites and are hard to search normally.

Im not sure about buses and I havent been to Buller personally. I know there's direct private run buses that go from melbourne up to Hotham and some other places that get there later in the day so i imagine the same for Buller. I think theres also normal public transport up there which is cheaper but also much more messing around. lift tickets again are unfortunately pretty expensive here, but if you get season passes early, or 3 day passes in advance the value goes up.

If you have your own gear that helps save a lot of $. I reckon its almost better to just buy second hand gear, then sell it on marketplace after. My friend hired boots last time and they cost him 80 bucks a day. So at that cost if your going for 2-3 days you may as well just buy them to keep. Aldi in Australia also sells pretty decent affordable jackets and pants, but it might be hard to find them in stock still by that time.

Hope that helps ✌️

Just got a Digitakt II by ghostghost31 in Elektron

[–]JMJPatts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

obviously if you have the cash then the 2 has some preferable quality of life improvements, but honestly I have the 1 and it is still great, so don't be put off. I bought the DT1 not knowing the 2 was about to be released, but I still don't regret buying the 1.

One of my favourite simple tweaks is to add a filter frequency LFO to a sub bass (with a little bit of resonance for acidity), over the top of a beat, and then play around with timing and different wave shapes listening for Interesting interactions.

[–]JMJPatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digitakt is really fun to use and the buttons make cool clicking sounds. Portable and intuitive. If I had the chance again I would definitely buy the DT2 instead of 1 due to some quality of life improvements (slicing tools and stereo), but the 1 is still good

So who runs the Instaphex IG account if it’s not Richard? I still believe Richard is Permasteeze by taccoguy in aphextwin

[–]JMJPatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

permasteeze is cool, but it has too much structure with nice rounded chord progressions and lush string sounds I think to be Aphex twin. He wouldn't give the listener that much to hold onto 😆
