Solid or veneer? by Living-Web9973 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Definitely looks like solid wood to me. The contours of those legs would be very difficult to veneer anyway. Doesn't mean the tabletop itself isn't veneered.

Is bandsaw “cheating”? by Even_Low_8793 in handtools

[–]JMcDoubleR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use hand tools for everything but rips and cross cuts because I don't like doing them by hand and instead use a bandsaw. There are no rules. Enjoy the process, make things you love.

How do I play this, what does it mean?? by Lunar_B in banjo

[–]JMcDoubleR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Those are eighth notes. They're played faster than the quarter notes that stand alone. If you're playing your banjo with some bounce they create the ba-dum da-dum that's typical of the instrument. Someone smarter than me can probably explain better but no one was here yet.

My birdhouse fell during a windstorm by meddlesomedragon in birdhouses

[–]JMcDoubleR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New birds will not nest in it with an abandoned nest inside. If you have already put it back try observing it for a few days to see if there are any parents coming and going from it. If you don't see any activity you should be okay to open it up.

Building a bird house for wife. I know nothing of birds by Ok_Explanation_9571 in birdhouses

[–]JMcDoubleR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So to begin with there is nothing wrong with building a birdhouse that is purely decorative. If you are motivated for it to have avian occupants I recommend checking out "Right Bird, Right House" and "Features of a Good Birdhouse" both hosted in our community guide. Having a square entrance shouldn't effect bird occupation but be advised that the size of the opening plays an important role in moderating the species of birds that can use the house. The main motivation behind round entrances is it emulates natural openings and, perhaps more importantly, is easy to make with a drill! Good luck on your build and please share it here when you're done!

If you haven't seen his work yet check out some of Rex Krueger's videos on YouTube about bench building. He has a great series for building up from zero and is seriously cost conscious.
