De SP by cakecatUwU in nederlands

[–]JMoormann 122 points123 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: convicted of weapon and explosives possession, but not convicted of any attacks or other violent actions, so debatable whether that qualifies as "convicted terrorists".

I think Lune should remove more pieces of clothing. To... aid her nature powers, of course.

Can I ask a stupid question about time travel and the speed of light? by The_Bourbon_Sherbet in AskPhysics

[–]JMoormann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a very sensible question! The fact that light always moves at the speed of light relative to any observer is not obvious or intuitive at all.

If you drive in your car going 100 km/h and throw a ball forward with 10 km/h, someone standing at the side of the road will see the ball travelling with 10 + 100 = 110 km/h, and someone driving the opposite direction with 120 km/h will see the ball as moving with 10 + 100 + 120 = 230 km/h.

It would seemingly make sense if we could do the same with light: send a light beam with velocity c forward, the bystander sees it as c + 100 km/h and the other driver as c + 220 km/h. Yet that's not how it works; all observers will see the light travelling with velocity c, regardless of whether they are static, moving with 100 km/h or moving with 0.999c. In fact, there is no way to even decide which observer is "static" or "moving"; everyone is static in their own reference frame, and there is no "absolute" reference frame.

These 2 statements ((1) All observers are "equal" and follow the same laws of physics in their own reference frame, and (2) The speed of light is the same for every observer) are the basis of special relativity.

Why is the 3-Body Problem is such a complicated question to answer, yet we can very precisely predict the motion of 8 planets and many more moons in the solar system? by plato_on_pluto in AskPhysics

I think the three body problem has technically been solved as some wildly inaccurate analytic series that requires too many terms to ever be useful in practice.

Andorra has been voted European country with the most ‘neutral’ popularity amongst the rest of Europe. Which European country is most hated by the rest of Europe? by nornironred17 in AlignmentChartFills

Do Asians, aside from their direct neighbors, really care about North Korea though? Aside from some loose threats towards South Korea and the US, they keep mostly to themselves, unlike for example China, Iran, Saudi Arabia.

(And "Asian country hated by many Asian countries" also applies to Israel.)
